Addressing the saying 'Humans use 10 percent of their brain,' Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, "No. Humans can use every capacity of their brain. There's no such thing as 10 percent. The human brain has an enormous capacity. It can use all of it, or none of it."

Highlighting the importance of mental flexibility, Tarhan emphasized that stubbornness is what prevents people from striving to develop mental flexibility. Tarhan also noted that individuals with flexible thinking do not develop Alzheimer's, stating, "Stubbornness, rigidity of thought... People with rigid thinking act with prejudice. They become status quo adherents. Being a status quo adherent and stubbornness are the most significant enemies of a person's mental flexibility."

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the topic of mental flexibility.

Those without mental flexibility fall into repetition…

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that mental flexibility refers to the ability to adapt to new situations, saying, "In fact, people have the capacity to mentally accept new information, be open to learning, think flexibly, and find different solutions to problems. This is a crucial issue. For instance, the ability to correct mistakes also falls under mental flexibility. Developing new learning methods also falls under mental flexibility. Those with mental flexibility succeed when they get married, when they encounter something new, or when they start a new job. Those without mental flexibility, on the other hand, repeat the same things."

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that the trial-and-error method is emphasized in people's learning processes, stating that in this model, a person who makes a mistake usually learns not to make the same mistake a second time. However, he added that it is difficult not to repeat the same mistake even once throughout life, and therefore, a person's lifespan would not be enough to learn everything through trial and error.

"Individuals without mental flexibility make the same mistake multiple times…"

At this point, Prof. Dr. Tarhan pointed out that intelligent people benefit from their experiences, explaining that individuals without mental flexibility make the same mistake multiple times. However, he said that individuals with mental flexibility, when faced with a problem, quickly generate solutions by reviewing their past experiences and making predictions about the future.

"The human mind consists of complex processes that function similarly to computer software"

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that mental processes are complex processes in which the human mind functions similarly to computer software, and that these can be examined in three main categories: innate abilities, learned abilities, and developed abilities.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan explained that innate abilities are the genetic and natural talents a person possesses at birth, and these abilities form the basis of mental processes, functioning similarly to a computer's fixed program. He added, "Learned abilities, on the other hand, are the knowledge and skills a person acquires throughout life. This information comes from factors such as family, school, experiences, and environmental interactions. Learned abilities increase a person's mental capacity and allow for its development. Developed abilities are the advancement of learned knowledge and skills to an even higher level."

Memory's six loyal guardians; 5W1H…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that mental flexibility skills are acquired from childhood, requiring an open mind. Referring to the 5W1H rule, known as memory's six loyal guardians and used by communicators, he said, "This means multidimensional thinking. Who said it, what was said, where was it said, when was it said, how was it said... This is called six-dimensional thinking. When a piece of information arrives, the brain uses those six networks. That information is recorded in the brain as permanent knowledge. In such situations, merely recording is not enough. Afterward, it needs to be explained, discussed, and related. An intelligent person is someone who can establish correct connections between events. This is the skill of association. When you associate an event with something else, you can see and grasp what no one else has heard or seen. You bring a different perspective, think with different options, meaning you engage in multidimensional thinking."

Humans can use the brain's full capacity…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, addressing the saying 'Humans use 10 percent of their brain,' said, "No. Humans can always use every capacity of their brain. That's an urban legend. There's no such thing as 10 percent. The human brain has an enormous capacity. It can use all of it, or none of it. One day, Einstein saw a group of young people having fun, not thinking, just enjoying themselves. He remarked, 'These people don't need a large brain; a spinal cord would suffice.' This is about using the brain. We have been given a device like the brain by creation. We have been given tremendous free will. We have been given a search for meaning that no other living creature possesses. We have been given the ability to question. Questioning the past to the future, questioning existence... While doing all these, there is an ability to adapt to new situations. There is continuous development. Accepting new information, being open to learning. Finding solutions to problems. This is something that develops our brain. Therefore, if we push our brain to think about how to solve a problem instead of escaping it, flexible thinking develops."

Being open to criticism is an important part of developing flexible thinking

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that developing flexible thinking is closely related to the ability to cope with challenges and find new solutions. He also expressed that individuals who avoid difficulties and prefer the easy way, as well as those raised in cultures of obedience, often fail to develop their mental skills and remain in a managed position. This situation, he noted, hinders the development of new ideas and discovery.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that being open to criticism is an important part of developing flexible thinking, adding, "Criticism enables people to see and correct their mistakes. Those who are closed to criticism may struggle to adapt to new situations and might miss opportunities for growth despite their successes."

"Those with flexible thinking do not develop Alzheimer's..."

Emphasizing that stubbornness is what prevents people from striving to develop mental flexibility, Prof. Dr. Tarhan continued:

"Stubbornness, rigidity of thought... People with rigid thinking act with prejudice. They act according to habits. They act within their mental comfort zones. They close themselves off to new situations. They become status quo adherents. Being a status quo adherent and stubbornness are the most significant enemies of a person's mental flexibility.

Those with a combative spirit are more open to mental flexibility. And they use the large capacity of their brains. They can continuously use and develop it. Being open to new situations and learning new things actually means maximizing the use of our brain. Our brain is an organ with over 100 billion cells. Each cell has 5,000 to 10,000 connections with other cells. The brain produces new cells and growth factors. In individuals open to new experiences, the brain produces new stem cells. These stem cells migrate through the brain and establish connections elsewhere. People with flexible thinking do not develop Alzheimer's. Even if they have the Alzheimer's gene, they don't get it because they use their brain. The brain operates on a 'use it or lose it' principle. It works like a well; the more water you draw, the more it flows. To use the brain extensively, one needs to be open to mental flexibility and learning. One needs to be open to mental questioning. Being open to criticism is important."

The feeling of hope activates the brain…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the things that activate the brain the most are the expectation of recovery and the feeling of hope, saying, "Optimistic individuals with an expectation of recovery, high hopes, and those open to new experiences... These are commonly known as lucky people. A test is conducted regarding this. They investigate what the common characteristics of people always considered lucky are. First, individuals with high hopes. Second, optimists, people who view events positively. Third, individuals who seek challenges and are open to new experiences. Due to these characteristics, these individuals are thought to be lucky."

Individuals open to innovation do not panic…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan pointed out that being open to different experiences, learning new things, gaining different perspectives, and maintaining a sense of hope increase mental flexibility. He also stated that mental flexibility allows one to overcome automatic thoughts and negative prejudices.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that increasing alpha waves, which are the brain's best learning waves, also supports mental flexibility, adding, "Individuals open to innovation do not panic under stress. They can remain calm. Therefore, mental flexibility is also the power to change oneself. It is the ability to adapt to situations."

Status quo adherents cannot learn…

Referring to studies on how humans learn best, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated the following:

"Neuroscience entered a new era after the 1995s. The brain was explored more deeply. It was learned that the brain produces new cells. Emotions were also understood to be a dimension of learning. In the 2000s, a psychologist named Kahneman said, 'Humans are not homo economicus, but homo psychologicus.' This means that when making decisions, people do not rely solely on reason. The rational actor is human psychology. When investing, people invest in areas they like. Appreciation, praise, and a sense of trust encourage people to invest and buy more. When investing, one needs to consider not just profit-loss analysis, but also a person's psychological needs. A paradigm shift occurred. This actually led to increased mental flexibility.

Humans are not material, mechanical beings, not a material entity. Humans are psychological beings. Status quo adherents cannot learn. You must calculate and take risks. A person who doesn't take risks cannot learn new things in life. That's why being open to new experiences is important."

The brain gains skills as it ages…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also offered suggestions for people to develop their brains, saying, "Individuals should make changes in their daily lives according to their needs. They should not go the same way every day. They should not shop at the same place every day. They should not wear the same thing every day. Changing habits is important. The brain does not age because it works all parts of itself. Our brain develops as we age, as years pass. Even if it shrinks, the brain develops. It's an interesting organ. The skills in the brain increase with age."
