## Özet

**Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan participated in the Psychology Talks organized by Isparta Gazi Social Sciences High School. Offering advice to students during the online meeting, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the world is undergoing a very rapid transformation. Tarhan stated: “Currently, the need for software developers is the greatest need. Large international companies are hiring individuals in Turkey who know languages and software. There is currently a brain drain, and Turkey is losing talent. We need to know two languages. One is a Western language, and the second is a programming language. Those who learn a programming language make a difference.”**

## ** “Those without social contact do not develop problem-solving and communication skills”**

In the program moderated by Ramazan Toker, a physics teacher at Isparta Gazi Social Sciences High School, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the biggest obstacle to progress in life is the inability to solve problems. Tarhan said; “There are certain rules for individuals to develop themselves professionally in a Social Sciences High School. At the university, there are also faculties of engineering, communication, and human and social sciences, but I observe that the social aspects of young people in the engineering faculty are very weak. They struggle with relationships, asking questions, and sharing collaboratively. After graduation, most of them become managed rather than managers, but those who graduate from social sciences, especially the communication faculty, are the ones who engage in most club activities and teamwork. Is it because they love engineering, science, and mathematics but not social studies, or does the profession make them that way? Ultimately, if someone chooses the field of social sciences, they must certainly develop their communication skills. Because our most significant obstacle to progress in life is the inability to solve problems. You encounter a problem, and solving it is a skill. It needs to be learned. Solving every problem teaches a person something. To solve problems, one must also seek out problems. For this, social contact is important. A person without social contact does not develop problem-solving and communication skills. People studying social sciences are fortunate in this regard because human relations are central to their work. However, in engineering, the mathematical brain, the left brain, is used more. Logic, reasoning, analysis, computational speaking. In social communication skills, the right brain is more prominent. We call the left brain the masculine brain and the right brain the feminine brain. But our prefrontal cortex balances both.”

## **“Nothing can be achieved without effort and getting tired”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, mentioning that one must leave their comfort zone to be successful, emphasized the importance of abandoning the comfortable area and embracing challenges. Tarhan stated; “You will equip yourselves with knowledge, but this knowledge should not only be theoretical; it must also include social and emotional information. Therefore, 21st-century skills currently emphasize emotional and social skills, not just technical ones. It is important to develop your social and emotional skills. Secondly, motivation is very important. The first step to having motivation is to have an intention. What kind of person do you want to be at the end of your life? What do you want written on your tombstone? This is the abstract intention. After that comes the intention of having a home, a car, children. After intention, the second is purpose. After purpose, the third is to increase attention span. Once attention is increased, motivation naturally follows. Therefore, it is very important to determine your purpose. What is your life purpose in social sciences? Determine this. When laziness or idleness creeps in, immediately recall the reasons for your motivation. Focus on them. The third thing we will mention is the ability to manage stress. When faced with difficulties, one should not give up. If there’s no plan A, there will be plan B, plan C. Be like a mountaineer. What are mountaineers? They try one path to reach their goal; if it doesn't work, they turn back and try another. Those who don't give up reach the summit. Those who give up turn back halfway. Life is like mountaineering. In mountaineering, paths are not paved with flowers. Paths are paved with stones. You will put in effort, get tired, suffer, but you will develop. There is no progress without breaking a sweat. This is a hidden law of psychology. Nothing can be achieved without effort and getting tired. One must leave their comfort zone. Do not expect success from someone who stays in their comfort zone. They will only repeat the existing. Leave your comfort zone, embrace challenges, embrace problems.”

## **“Generation X and Y are migrants of the social media generation”**

Referring to the fact that we live in an age of pleasure and speed, Tarhan mentioned that humanity is undergoing a very rapid transformation. Tarhan stated; “The world is experiencing a rapid transformation. We live in an age of speed. In fact, we live in an age of pleasure and speed. In such an age, the half-life of information used to be 30 years, now it has decreased to 2-3 years. Newly produced information becomes obsolete after 2-3 years. Just like a mobile phone. Information becomes outdated. In such a situation, Generation X, unable to keep up with Generations Y and Z, labeled them. I do not categorize X, Y, and Z by age group to make them more memorable. Generation X is the radio generation, Generation Y is the television generation. Generation Z is the social media generation. After this, Generation Alpha will probably be the metaverse generation. Because they were born into this technology. Generation X and Y are migrants of the social media generation. They, on the other hand, are its natives. Currently, in the last 15 years, it has changed the form of communication, worldviews, and perspectives on the world. There is a very rapid change. Humanity is undergoing a very rapid transformation. Popular culture is now entering our homes. We call television and smartphones the open door of the house. Our home is a safe space. But from there, we can go to very unsafe spaces. Therefore, Generation Z is at greater risk, but at the same time, great opportunities await them. Social media is an opportunity. Those who use their minds use social media for a specific purpose or goal. Those who don’t use their minds are managed by social media. If we don’t use technology, technology uses us.”

## **“We will increase our resilience against malevolent emotions”**

Tarhan, emphasizing that the fear of making mistakes pushes people to be managed by others, said; “It is important to learn from our mistakes. The fear of making mistakes pushes a person to be managed by others. Don’t be afraid of mistakes, but every mistake, even the word 'risk' in Chinese, has two legs. It’s a symbolic language. One symbol is opportunity, the other is danger. In fact, every risk contains both a threat and an opportunity. Whichever we focus on, that’s what appears before us. There are even regional wisdom stories, among the tales of Anatolian wisdom. One day, a friend of God was walking with his grandson when he saw two dogs, one black and one white, fighting each other. The grandson asked; ‘Grandfather, which one will win?’ The grandfather replied; ‘My child, whichever one we feed will win. If we feed the black one, it will, if we feed the white one, it will.’ In reality, what he called white are the benevolent emotions within all of us, and what he called black are the malevolent emotions within all of us. Whichever we feed will become part of our lives. In our inner world, we will also nurture benevolent emotions, the human and moral values taught by our culture. But we will also increase our resilience against malevolent emotions. If we can do this, we will transform the obstacles and problems we face on the path to success in life into opportunities and gains.”

## **“Technology has changed our relationship with ourselves, the world, and the universe”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that globalization has currently changed the way humans interact in our communication lives. Tarhan said; “The understanding that sees the state as the boss, the statist approach, is an outdated understanding. The nation is the boss, not the state. The state is merely a tool of society, an element, a technical structure, not sacred. Our ancestors kept society standing by deeming the state sacred, but in this age of globalization, if you take refuge in the sanctity of the state, you become a closed society. We must be an open society. This globalization has now changed the human relationship pattern in our communication lives. Technology has also changed our relationship with the world. It has changed our relationship with ourselves. It has developed our relationship with the universe. I even liken the human being's reason for existence, thinking about the purpose of life, that is, being able to establish a spiritual connection with the creator, to being online. The more online one is, the more help one receives. And what is that? It happens by remembering Him, by thinking of Him, by taking refuge in Him. For this reason, we need to establish two balances. If technology enslaves us, we become slaves to technology. But if we use technology for our purpose, technology is like a wild horse. What is a wild horse? If you train a wild horse well, the wild horse takes you to your goal, it brings you to your goal quickly. If you do not train it well, it takes you to its own desired goal. We all have a wild horse named 'nafs' (ego/self) within us. Technology is like that, it's a technological form of our ego, but if we discipline it for our purpose, it will make us soar.”

## **“The essence is more important than the method, but the method takes precedence over the essence” **

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, pointing out that people can forget what they understand but cannot forget what they feel, mentioned that when a thought is accepted, emotion must be added to it. Tarhan said; “Providing values education is a well-intentioned task, but the methodology needs to be chosen correctly. If the scientific methodology is chosen correctly, no one will object. Otherwise, it is perceived as propaganda. People close their perceptions. Values education cannot be like propaganda; it happens through experiencing and living values, and the most ideal learning method is learning through experience, learning through feeling. People can forget what they understand, but they don't forget what they feel. When they add their emotions to the work they do, they don't forget it. It is now written with chemical letters in the brain. Values are written in the brain with the electrical letters they feel. Therefore, here, one should generously add emotion to the work one does; when you add emotion to a thought, it turns into a belief. If you continue this belief, it turns into a habit; if you continue the habit, it turns into personality. This takes 6 months. When you accept a thought, you must add emotion to it. That is, you must have emotional reasons to do it. This is an important value for me, and it is also a priority for me. In other words, we will create a pyramid of importance and priority in our brains. We will dedicate the most time to the most important issue. The most prioritized, even priority itself, there is a saying in Mecelle; 'Usul esastan mukadderdir.' (The method is destined before the essence). That is, how something will be is more important than why it will be. The essence is more important than the method, but the method takes precedence over the essence. Therefore, in the work we do, let's clearly distinguish between method and essence. Young people don't know this, they don't want to. They dive in blindly. How you want something is as important as what you want.”
