## Özet

Recent news of violence against children from many cities has caused public outrage. Reactions poured in from all segments of society, especially to reports of infants and children being subjected to violence by their parents. Stating that there are 5 types of domestic violence: physical violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect, **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan** said that love and trust are two important nourishments for a child's psychological development.  Tarhan noted that a child who does not receive the nourishment of love and trust will grow up with traumas, and added that **in the fight against domestic violence, treatment is more important than punishment**. Tarhan also drew attention to the effect of group stress on violence.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drew attention to the fact that the brain development of infants and children, especially those subjected to violence by their families, is negatively affected.

**There are 5 types of domestic violence**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the type of violence, which includes violence against children, is referred to as “domestik şiddet” in literature, and said, “Domestic violence, just like violence against women, can also be directed at defenseless and vulnerable children and children in early childhood. We, mental health professionals, look at the Childhood Trauma Scale in every case. Five types of violence are mentioned here: physical violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect.” he said.

**In emotional neglect, the child is left without love**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that physical abuse can occur in forms such as starving or confining a child to a room, as well as by frightening and threatening them. He said, “Confining a child to a room, or scaring them by saying 'I'll burn you,' constitutes physical abuse. In emotional abuse, there is no physical violence, but the child is deprived of many emotions and left hungry. For example, they can be subjected to emotional threat by saying 'I won't love you.' Or they can suffer emotional abuse with the threat that harm might come to their mother. One of the most common types of this violence is emotional neglect. In this, too, the child is left without love.” he said.

**Love and trust are two important psychological nourishments**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that meeting a child's emotional needs is as important as meeting their physical needs for their development, and warned, “If you do not provide a child with enough food, drink, and necessary nourishment while raising them, they will fall ill, fail to develop, and there will be sudden deaths. Similarly, it should not be forgotten that just as a child has physical nourishment, they also have psychological nourishment. There are two most important psychological nourishments: one is love, the other is trust. If a child cannot receive the nourishment of love and trust, cannot feel safe, and is in an unloving environment, that child will grow up amidst traumas.” he warned.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that according to recent studies, childhood traumas between the ages of 0-6 leave permanent marks on the brain, and said, “Traumas experienced during this period disrupt the child's brain network. That child will have learning difficulties in the future. Various developmental disorders appear in the child, and mental retardation emerges. Problems arise in some verbal, emotional, and social skills.” he said.

**If a child does not feel safe, it can lead to autism and schizophrenia**

Emphasizing that shock experiences during the 0-6 age period mean the child feels unloved and unsafe, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan warned, “An unloved and unsafe child is even described in literature as follows: The child constantly cries. This condition is called maternal deprivation syndrome. When someone approaches, they stop and look. If it's not their mother, they start crying again. This is sometimes mistaken for mischief. A child actually feels abandoned in a forest when there is no secure attachment. In children stimulated by violence, the child feels unsafe. Not trust, but fear becomes the dominant emotion in the child. Because they don't feel safe in their life, they withdraw, and if this situation persists for a long time, continuously and constantly, it leads to childhood autism and childhood schizophrenia.” he warned.

**Violent parents see their child as a slave…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that children subjected to intense and continuous violence are taken under state protection, and said, “It is healthier for these children to grow up without a mother and father. They are taken from their families by court order and placed under state protection. The mother of these children cannot mother and protect them. The father uses violence. In such a situation, it is quite natural and a right for the state to take the child, saying you cannot be parents. Serious legal arrangements need to be made regarding this in Turkey. Everyone needs to learn that children also have rights. A mother or father who shows violence towards a child sees the child as their slave. Or they see the child as an appendage, like an arm or a leg.” he said.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also evaluated the increase in such incidents of violence in society recently, and said, “In such situations, one can generally speak of group stress.  News comes of someone who has never committed violence before now doing so. Generally, such incidents happen out of anger. These individuals largely suffer from anger control disorder and impulse control disorder. They cannot control their anger and later regret it. Such situations require treatment. The child is taken from them. Mandatory treatment and rehabilitation should be provided to the parents by court order.” he said.

**Probation should be applied to violent parents**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the infrastructure for mandatory rehabilitation for such situations has not yet been established in our country, and warned, “Courts make decisions on this matter but are left helpless. Turkey's biggest missing point and most important deficiency in the fight against domestic violence are probation practices. A person who commits violence against a child should not be able to reclaim their child without undergoing mandatory treatment and education in rehabilitation centers and being issued a report stating that they can parent again. Just like the probation system applied in substance addiction, it should be applied here too. If we don't do this, children can turn into crime machines in the future. Child victims of violence often become perpetrators of violence themselves later on.” he warned.  

**The widespread nature of violence is linked to group stress **

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the widespread nature of violence in society is linked to group stress, and said, “When does the application of violence increase in a culture? It increases if there is group stress. If there is stress in the family, if there is violence in the family, if there is stress in the work environment. When there is group stress, discussions increase, and violent crimes increase. If we consider Turkey as a whole, if there is general group stress in the country, it could have been the last straw in the recent incidents of violence. This needs to be analyzed well. Is there an increase in societal stress? It appears so. We see that these incidents are statistically increasing. In such a situation, measures that instill confidence and reduce fear in society need to be implemented.” he said.

**An approach that explains everything economically would be wrong…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that looking to the future with hope, people feeling safe, and a person loving their job increase civic loyalty, and said, “What increases civic loyalty? Firstly, loving one's country, secondly, feeling secure about one's future, and thirdly, having one's belly full. An approach that explains everything economically would be wrong.” he said.

**There is a need for policies that provide trust in society…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the perspectives of younger generations are different from those of adults, and said, “The young generation is a global generation and a generation that follows global truths. The idealism of nation and country, which we refer to as national character for older generations, is secondary for the current generation. We cannot persuade this young generation with the idealism of nation and country. We need to provide reasons for them to love their country and future. To change these policies again, there is a need for policies that provide trust in society.” he said.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that treatment is more important than punishment as a solution in the fight against domestic violence, adding, “A treatment decision, more important than punishment, should be given to parents. If approved, treatment should be provided.” he said.

**Motherhood and fatherhood should be taught**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the incidents experienced in families recently indicate a crisis in this institution, and said:

“The emergence of such incidents from the family means there is a crisis in the family. It means there is a fire. Our Ministry of Family and Social Policies cannot produce solutions for this fire. A child growing up in a safe environment is paramount. A child's greatest need is to be in a safe environment, to have a family environment that loves and values them. If you cannot create an environment for secure attachment in a family setting, those individuals are not good parents. If a child comes home scared, or runs away from home, you are not good parents. Motherhood and fatherhood should be taught. A license is given to drive a car, but there is no license to be a parent. If such individuals went through a marriage maturity process and were educated, they would also produce other solutions. Maslow's saying is: ‘To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.’”
