Within the scope of the 2-day Kazakhstan meetings, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, participated in a Round Table Meeting with the Family Research Center of the 'Ruhani Jangri' Institute for Societal Development, under the Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture, on the first day. The meeting, held under the title “Socio-Psychological Problems and Solution Methods of the Family Institution in the Contemporary Period,” was attended by academics and experts working in the field, as well as press members.

In his speech, Tarhan evaluated the family and the concept of family by sharing the results of global research indicating its decline. Tarhan used the following expressions:

## **Happiness decreased while material prosperity increased…**

“We must scientifically focus on where the world is heading regarding the family and the value given to it. Research results covering the years 1950-2000 show that despite increases in income levels, living standards, and material prosperity, happiness has not increased in parallel.” he said.

## **Young people are moving away from face-to-face gatherings…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also pointed out that young people are drifting further apart each day. Tarhan stated, “Another study shows that among 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th-grade students, the rate of young people who converse face-to-face and gather daily has decreased by 60-70%. The frequency of our youth’s face-to-face socialization and gathering is decreasing.”

## **The incidence of depression is increasing…**

Tarhan emphasized that the incidence of depression is increasing day by day and added: “Another study covering the years 2013-2016 shows an increasing incidence of depression in men and women, and in parallel, suicide cases, injuries, involvement in crime, and violence are multiplying…”

## **70 out of 100 children are born out of wedlock…**

Tarhan added that another issue threatening the family is the increase in out-of-wedlock birth rates and increasing household fragility. Tarhan stated, “Another indicator of society’s decline is the increasing rates of out-of-wedlock births in European countries. In European countries, 60-70 out of 100 children are born out of wedlock. This situation shows the absence of the family institution in European and Western societies. This rate is 2.9% in Turkey. Although it is behind European countries, we should be careful. Because divorces are increasing in our country. In studies on household fragility, the number of single-person households is increasing, while the number of 5-person households is decreasing in the opposite direction. The significant increase in single-person families indicates a weakening of the family. From this, we can actually have a foresight for Turkey in 20-30 years.”

## **Turkey is a leader in violence against women!**

Keeping the increasing global violence against women on his agenda in his speech, Tarhan underlined that Turkey is a leader in violence against women. Tarhan stated, “Our country ranks first in the world for violence against women. The USA ranks second in violence against women. On one side, increasing divorces, incidents of violence, out-of-wedlock birth rates… All of these require a sociological root cause analysis…”

## **3 reasons weakening the family!**

Tarhan defined the three psychosocial reasons globally weakening the family as secularism, social anomie (i.e., the deterioration of social norms), and individualism, and stated that happiness decreases as the family weakens. Tarhan also mentioned that there are values that hold the family together. Tarhan listed these values as follows:

“Consultation, Equality, Autonomy, Equity, Love, Respect, Trust, Sharing, Material Gains, Spiritual Gains…”

## **The mobile phone is the family’s gateway to the outside…**

Tarhan, particularly emphasizing that the family is the last refuge, the last fortress today, drew attention to the danger of mobile phones. Tarhan said, “There are outer walls that protect a city and inner walls. The inner wall is the family. While the family once handled global transmission, today, unfortunately, social media and TV do this transmission. Social norms at home have changed. Mobile phones are now the family's gateway to the outside. The mobile phone is an element that disperses family values.”

## **One should act like a leader, not a boss, in the family…**

Stating that the leadership adopted is vital for the family to stay together, Tarhan said that the ideal in a family is to be "we" while remaining "I". Tarhan also expressed that lies are a factor that harms the family the most and weakens trust. Tarhan spoke about the importance of leadership in the family as follows:

“Leadership is important in the family; a leader;
Doesn't herd, but guides,
Doesn't scare, but inspires desire,
Doesn't expect praise, but praises,
Doesn't expect love, but loves…
Top-down parenting models that give orders harm the family. It is necessary to succeed in acting like a leader, not a boss, in family relationships… Being able to work as a team in the family is very valuable. Indeed, teamwork is a 21st-century skill. One should develop a team-oriented perspective, not a person-oriented one.”

## **A true leader is one who can balance role distribution…**

Tarhan, particularly emphasizing the importance of role sharing in the family, said, “While a father has the roles of a businessman, father, and husband, a mother also has a dual career as a businesswoman, mother, wife, and homemaker. The important thing is to be able to balance the sharing of these roles. You can be a very good businessman, but if you cannot be a good mother or father, or a spouse, it loses its meaning. A true leader is one who can balance all these roles.”

## **Both Turkey and Europe fell for the game…**

Addressing the need for a root cause analysis of increasing violence against women globally, Tarhan stated that a cultural change is taking place at a global level. Tarhan said, “There is a movement that turns male-female relationships into male-female wars. Some global powers, global capital, do not want the world population to increase. Thus, they are trying to destroy marriage. It was a planned movement. Both Turkey and Europe fell for the game… To dismantle the family, feminism turned male-female relationships into male-female wars. The media can also support this.”

## **It is the dosage that makes feminism beneficial or harmful!**

Tarhan, likening feminism to medicine and poison, said, “Feminism is a necessary movement. It is its dosage that makes feminism beneficial or harmful, just as it is the dosage that makes medicine and poison harmful or beneficial. Women and men are equal in rights and opportunities, yes. But biologically, there is no equality; they have different creations. If it advocates for rights and equality, it is beneficial feminism… Marriage is not a war between women and men; they are complementary to each other. Neither women nor men are superior to each other. When discussing the concept of family, I take a scientific approach. What is rational is also scientific. What is scientific is also rational.”

## **Societies that value family will be the ones shaping tomorrow…**

In the meeting, which lasted approximately 2 hours and also had online participation, Tarhan underlined why the family is necessary in the 21st century. Tarhan used the following expressions:

“The family is the building block of society. Children cannot be raised in a society without a family. There must be maternal love between the ages of 0-3. If the family disintegrates, humanity ends. Modernism has ignored the family and its social accumulation. As an Eastern society, we are more fortunate. The West will be like the late Roman period.
Today, serious games are being played at a global level to harm the concept of family. Let's not be tools in these games. The family institution is very important not only for preserving our own culture but also for the future of humanity. I can easily say that 'Societies that value and uphold the family will be societies that shape tomorrow and the future…”

Following the program, which also attracted the interest of press members, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Kazakhstan Institute for Societal Development and Üsküdar Üniversitesi.

The dinner was attended by THY Astana General Manager Engin Akbaş and his wife Çiğdem Akbaş, Rixos President Astana Hotel Manager Prof. Dr. Tansel Tercan and his wife Dr. Nurfer Tercan, academics from L.
