## Özet

**War is a brutal reality that shakes human history and fundamentally alters lives. However, the effects of war are not limited to physical destruction and losses; it also brings with it a trauma that penetrates the depths of the human mind. Therefore, children and women, who are among the most vulnerable groups in war, require us to address their suffering not only from an individual but also from a societal perspective. Understanding the effects of war on individuals' mental health means unraveling the complexities of war psychology.**

In this interview, we consulted the profound wisdom of Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar Üniversitesi and Psychiatrist, to understand the deep effects of war on the human spirit and to explore how support can be provided during this challenging process. Focusing on human resilience and healing potential, we listened to his account of the path war follows. Happy reading...

The crisis that began in Gaza on October 7 is currently escalating. Normally, in wars, about 5-10% of deaths are unarmed civilians, women, and children. Here, around 70% of the deaths are unarmed individuals, and interestingly, the war has now surpassed 3 months, yet control over the ground is not established, and 80% of Hamas, the resisting side fighting in Gaza, remains intact. Only 20% has been neutralized. This indicates that it is not an easy war.

While the civilian death rate is very high, neutralizing combatants is not being achieved. Despite the US and Israeli armies possessing advanced equipment, the forces are failing to achieve the main objective of war, which is to render the opposing side unable to fight. This situation is surprising the whole world; there is a serious astonishment, particularly regarding the quality of life and combat skills of the people fighting in Gaza.

Today's wars are not limited to just one region, as the world has become an electronic village. For example, the Twin Towers tragedy on September 11, 2001, affected not only those living in that city but the entire world due to widespread communication. This event led to secondary and tertiary traumas, was discussed globally, and altered world balances. Many countries were occupied and later withdrew from occupation. These processes caused a lot of political insecurity and situations that eroded trust among victims. This should be noted as an important point.

When we examine the psychology of those leading the war, we observe that on both the warring side and the side being fought, the psychology of the resisting side, as I mentioned, has a strong sense of confidence that is not lost, and a high power to endure. On the other hand, there is the US, Israel, and UK side, fighting with a type of person who has benefited from the blessings of globalization, is accustomed to a comfortable life, and feels incomplete and bad when there is no cola. In fact, we now see that behind the war, both on the front and behind the front lines, are two important old and new superpowers: Britain and America. The people there, having benefited from the blessings of globalization, struggle to endure prolonged war; this situation is valid worldwide. Of course, wars have justifications; visible justifications and invisible justifications.

For example, in the Crusades, the visible justification was a religious war; however, the invisible justification was the plundering of the then-wealthy East. In one of the Crusades, even though it was in Byzantine hands, Istanbul was plundered by Catholics because it was Orthodox. This led to a Byzantine army saying, 'We would rather see a Muslim turban than a Catholic hat.' Therefore, although these wars appear to be religious wars, wars in history have generally occurred as wars of plunder. From Central Asia to Manchuria, to the Mongol Empire, the old way of enrichment was through war and spoils.

## **There is a project created with a controlled tension strategy.**

Previously, military economy dominated, but with the industrial revolution, military economy gave way to industrial economy. Power shifted from military might to industrial power. In the 21st century, military power and economic power together are moving towards becoming a superpower in the world. Currently, the US has hundreds of military bases in the Middle East; not dozens, but hundreds. Considering all these circumstances, we understand that this war actually seriously involves a controlled tension strategy and psychological warfare.

The controlled tension strategy works by people creating a small tension in one place to achieve a certain goal, and then using this tension as an excuse to settle there. In tension strategies, Hitler, for example, created a fake tension by claiming 'Poles bombed the parliament building in Berlin,' and used this as an excuse to attack Poland, starting World War II. In World War II, we saw how much of humanity's resources were depleted. In World War I, we saw how those huge ships sank in Gallipoli.

All of this shows that the wealth provided by industrialization has been misused. The Chinese sage Sun Tzu has a famous saying: 'Intelligent leaders win wars without fighting.' We cannot say that the leaders who started this war are intelligent leaders. There is a disproportionate war here, like shooting an ant with a rifle. When we consider the power of Hamas versus the power of the other side, it's a very disproportionate force. So why does it appear that Hamas started this war? In reality, there is a feeling of being besieged. You've cut off all its water, electricity, entry, exit, controlling everything. What does a cat do when cornered? It jumps at a person. Hamas was also cornered there. In some way, there is a disproportionate intervention in response to its reaction. One should consider that this is actually a project.

**The war there is a psychological war, a project created with a controlled tension strategy.** Israel feels alone in the Middle East. In fact, it feels alone as a result of its own policies. Consequently, it tries to create power by forming various lobbies, saying 'we are alone, come to me.' Unrest and bombings in the Middle East increase Israel's security. **Leaders act based on political correctness rather than moral correctness.** This is also a Machiavellian philosophy.

What is there in Machiavellian philosophy? If you ask what war Machiavellianism is best applied to right now, the answer is what is happening in Gaza. There is currently a system where it is said that anything is permissible to achieve the goal. What is the goal here: to exist as soldiers of superpowers. For that, problems need to arise there so that there is a need for them. That is, a war initiated to make us feel needed. One should not fall for this game. The visible reason in this war is something that was exploded as if there was a terrorist incident. We don't know how that crisis started or what happened there; it's dark there right now. Global powers want to maintain their dominance there. To dominate that region, to be present more, how was it in Afghanistan, how was it in Iraq, and then withdrew? We can say that it is a war initiated to create a feeling of 'we are needed' there. I say we can do such a mental exercise when we consider the psychology of those in charge.

In order to understand the profound effects of war on human psychology, could you share your thoughts on how the trauma experienced by individuals who have lived through war is shaped?

## **War dehumanizes a person…**

War can be considered a point where a person is dehumanized; for under war conditions, a person's state of mind is similar to the feelings of someone about to drown. In such a situation, a person grasps whatever they can first – even if it's their sibling – and pulls them close, and as a result of this reflex, both can drown. This is a life-or-death reflex inherent in human nature. Therefore, a person in such an emotional state is expected to commit all kinds of wrongs and evils, even if it goes against their fundamental personality values. In this situation, the 'last resort' principle comes into play; that is, the thought 'I have no other option to survive, so even this wrong is justified for me' might prevail. It can also be called a person's survival response.

A person who has never considered death before suddenly faces it, especially when considering soldiers fighting on the front lines. What kind of place is a war environment? It's a place where freedom ceases to exist, where one cannot even change position, where there's no chance to leave the trench, a wet, dirty place where one cannot wash and forgets normal hygiene standards. In this environment, people's primary feeling is fear, because sometimes they go without sleep for days. Fear, fatigue, and sleeplessness dominate. In such a situation, even individuals with the best war training, according to 10 to 20 years of research, carry the effects of war for many years. According to research, between 20% and 50% of soldiers experience post-traumatic stress disorder after war. As a result of this, almost half of Vietnam veterans became alcoholics, as they used alcohol as an escape route, unable to overcome the anxiety, fear, and traumas from that period.

**It's a good thing nuclear warheads exist; they act as a deterrent against larger wars…**

Today, as far as I know, 10-15 countries in the world possess nuclear warheads, and this number is increasing, especially in Russia, the rate of possessing these weapons is quite high. If a nuclear missile were launched, the world would end. If a reciprocal nuclear war began, humanity would return to the Stone Age. For this reason, the existence of nuclear weapons creates a kind of deterrent effect regarding fear and war. Therefore, **I think it is necessary to bring up and keep in mind that it's a good thing nuclear warheads exist.** There are types who leave no stone unturned in advocating for war. It is important to disrupt this thinking against those who say 'let's fight' by reminding them of the existence of nuclear weapons. For now, humanity has not found another way to achieve results without war. The start of World War III would be a disaster for humanity. However, a crazy leader can always emerge, and it is the duty of intelligent people in the rest of the world to stop such a leader.

## **For the resistance fighters in Gaza, the most powerful weapon is having overcome the fear of death.**

Today, wars sparked by conflicts of interest can expand through a domino effect, leading to fear and fatigue. When we consider that 60-70% of war victims are women, children, and unarmed individuals, most of these people actually want to leave Gaza. Those who remain hungry and sleepless for 24 hours are experiencing this immense trauma. However, the fact that people in Gaza possess a war ideology causes the war to continue.

Every war must have an ideology, a reason. Currently, the aggressor side is advancing its war ideology with religious justifications. Israel, as a theocratic state, is fighting with religious justifications such as Armageddon and the Promised Land. Throughout history, religious wars are seen to have ended with World War II. Beneath events that appear on the surface as religious wars and crusades, there actually lie the efforts of global powers to establish dominance in the region and secure their own future. The desire for global sovereignty and control comes to the fore in this process. While the war industry gains significant profits from this situation, a situation arises where everyone feels compelled to buy weapons, and arms manufacturers and traders become the most profitable. In this context, from the perspective of the victims, the war ideology views death not as an end, but as martyrdom. Martyrdom is the most powerful weapon for those who believe they will reach a higher station after death and do not fear death.

**For those resisting in Gaza, the greatest weapon is the weapon of not fearing death.** This is an advantage the opposing side does not possess; the Israeli side acts more cautiously because they fear death. The power of not fearing death is currently being used as an effective weapon by the Gaza side. Their war ideology is strong because they believe a better life awaits them after death. On the other hand, the Israeli side does not have such a war ideology; for them, everything is limited to this world, so they always avoid death and war, likely shying away from taking risks on the front lines. However, things don't always go their way. The outcome of this war seems to be that the patient one will win. It can be said that children in Gaza feel less trauma because their war ideology is high. For the people there...

## **Political deceit and political distrust prevail on a global scale...**

Groups larger than those in a march in Turkey organized marches in England and America; this shows that people there are more deeply aware of their countries' responsibilities. Reflexes are stronger there. Similar events occurred in Sweden and other parts of the world, but with the advantages brought by the age of communication, they were not as widespread. They used to say 'A liar's candle burns until dusk'; now, a liar's candle burns until the internet. The lies of those who started this war and those who failed to secure a ceasefire are now public on the internet. The freedom and openness of everything on the internet indicate that we are facing a world politics full of a crisis of trust. Where there is no trust, fear prevails, and where there is fear, anxiety about the future dominates. There is political deceit and political distrust among people...

The world outside the US no longer trusts US politics. The double standards that emerge in every event and the political bankruptcy of Western values are being laid bare.** A serious hypocrisy has been thoroughly exposed and made visible.** The idea of establishing dozens of states in the Middle East, the thoughts of fragmenting Turkey's southeast are now clearly visible...

During this period, people cannot be deceived by propaganda. In fact, this situation has been very good for people; because people can distinguish between the hypocritical and the honest and sincere. The events in Palestine and the grassroots reactions against double standards worldwide are meaningful. Furthermore, we see that many people's **reflex to read and understand the Quran from its source has accelerated.** I believe this will grow with a snowball effect.

The video of a grandfather holding his dead grandchild in Palestine became a very effective tool against Islamophobia and had the power to break the perception of Islamophobia. In the video, the psychological resilience and strength shown by the grandfather through his attire and sincerity, experiencing a peaceful farewell with his grandchild, seeing him off on a long journey with the belief and feeling that they would meet again in the future; feeling mercy, pain, and peace all at once, changed the perception of the global citizen living in fear. This situation awakens the feeling in people that 'a religion that provides such teachings should be investigated.' In this context, for those who predict that the 21st century will be the century of wisdom, this event is a turning point that will accelerate the process. Therefore, we can say that people's need to search for truth will increase. Thus, this will be globally beneficial for humanity, and **I believe the victims in Gaza will be remembered as significant figures in history.**

Of course, there is also the issue of human rights... Currently, the political double standard of the West is clearly visible: talking about human rights when it suits them, and not addressing human rights when it doesn't. This exposes their insincerity. Human rights have become a sacred value of 20th-century modernism. Human rights, as enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration and accepted by everyone, are seen by political leadership as a tool that can be used whenever desired. This situation has exposed the existing hypocrisy. When lies emerge, trust is shaken, and as trust reverts, the game is spoiled.

Therefore, we will now see the game of global capital and powers being disrupted. Because lies and insincerity have been exposed, trust has weakened. When trust weakens, credibility is also shaken. In such situations, the masses expect a grassroots change. This hypocrisy regarding human rights will have a societal consequence, but this will happen in the medium term, not the short term.

**Global inequality also manifests itself in human rights.**

The bombing of migrant centers under UN supervision, the deaths of refugees and journalists there, the loss of life of over a hundred UN workers; the inability of the United Nations to intervene in this highlights a major contradiction. This situation reveals global injustice and double standards, as well as global inequalities experienced in the field of human rights alongside economic global inequalities. Global inequalities in people's access to opportunities have also become more visible with this situation. The exposure of deception, intrigue, and black propaganda disrupts black propaganda.

**Openness and transparency are the greatest enemies of black propaganda.** The revelation of the source and the understanding of the consequences will disrupt the game in the global psychological warfare managed by black propaganda. Those who lie and apply double standards are evident. This situation causes humanity to adopt a more questioning stance against black propaganda, because the issue of trust has begun to be questioned.

## **Media members serving in war zones are war heroes…**

Thanks to the existence of social media, it is becoming possible to share small videos coming from the battlefield through various means. Thanks to satellites, 21st-century wars are now progressing as wars broadcast from the front. In this situation, media members serving in the war zone are, in effect, heroes of duty. In war situations, there are three different layers: a warring military side, the grassroots of society, and observers who are not fighting. According to a statement by retired General and former Land Forces Commander Kemal Yamak, which I personally heard from him during my duty in Cyprus and which he also wrote in his book; **'soldiers fight with three things: first, seeing their commander at their head; second, watching the flag wave; and third, hearing the call to prayer.'** If these three conditions are met, soldiers are stated to be ready for war, and this situation still holds true.

**Leaders who act openly, transparently, and honestly will leave a good mark in history.**

In wars, a crucial factor forming combat power includes the courage to face death, such as war ideology and martyrdom, and emphasizes the importance of leadership. Therefore, leadership is very important in wars. Leaders must exhibit trustworthy leadership. In studies conducted on business management, when asked about desired leadership qualities, honesty comes first, human-centricity second, and professional and financial gains third. Leaders who exhibit open, transparent, and honest behavior will receive a good mark in history in the future. In terms of war psychology and its effects on societal psychology, leadership is of great importance to build resilience and robustness in society.

Although the justification for fighting is important, it should be noted that this situation could lead to a new wave of armament in the world. People and states will allocate their resources to further armament. For countries like Turkey, which have geostrategic importance and are at risk in a chaotic geography, possessing a strong army is always very important.

So, having a strong army that sustains Turkey and protects its borders is a stroke of luck. Currently in Turkey, those who want to disrupt the game might try to sow discord within the army. A system in Turkey that operates respectfully to democracy and is committed to national will, with the armed forces integrated into this democratic structure, disrupts the game. There might be those who try to create chaos and disturb peace in Turkey. However, more important than the armed modernization of the army is its mental modernization. 'The mental modernization of our army' means an army at the command of the national will, as in developed countries. An army not at the command of the national will indicates that it is not possible to keep society together in Turkey.

**Wars cause great losses in the short term, but when good lessons are learned, they can create opportunities in the medium and long term.**

People in the war zone will face numerous health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and stress-related internal and somatic diseases. Especially among women and children, there will be many disabled and injured individuals; these will all be victims of war. However, psychologically strong individuals will be able to overcome these difficulties more easily. For war actually ends in the brain; if a person does not fall into despair and pessimism, their body will show the same resistance. Thus, a person can find the strength to be reborn from the ashes even amidst difficulties. Therefore, **despite the short-term losses caused by war, when good lessons are learned, this situation allows for the emergence of new opportunities in the medium and long term.** This perspective also offers a hopeful outlook in the face of the threat of war escalating into a world war or a regional conflict evolving into a global war.

The threat of this war is that it will turn into a world war and more people will die. The opportunity dimension, however, is that it pushes humanity to search for what is better and right, moves it away from selfishness, opportunism, and people with bad political agendas, and exalts political honesty... Humanity is no longer the humanity of 50 or 100 years ago. Humanity is more aware of humane values. The tendency to search for truth is greater. Because everyone is aware of everything. There is a beautiful core within humanity. We all have a malevolent streak and a benevolent streak... There is an opportunity to develop the benevolent streak within people during such war processes. In this situation, **seeing the bad consequences of wars also creates the potential for dreams of creating a fair world where such wars will not happen again to come true…** In this sense, important duties also fall to the media.

**This war may be the biggest psychopolitical consequence that clearly reveals the need for the United Nations (UN) to be rebuilt and reformed.**

Against the possibility of nuclear war, the necessity of achieving global peace becomes even more important. The UN needs to move beyond the monopoly of just five countries and become a true world parliament. If this war leads to the restructuring of the UN, this could be a positive development for the world. The UN must now evolve from a structure that stands with powerful countries and leaves problems unresolved, to an institution that can genuinely solve problems. **The most important sociopolitical and psychopolitical outcome demonstrated by this war is the necessity of rebuilding and reforming the UN. This is not just a political need, but also a change that people truly need.**
