Üsküdar Üniversitesi's 7th Psychology Days, themed ‘21st Century: From Globe to Individual: The Conflict Within Us’, has begun.

The opening speeches of the program were delivered by Psychology Club President Başak Sena Kemik, Psychology Club Advisor Lecturer Murat Otoğlu, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean and Rector Advisor Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, delivered a speech titled ‘An Inner Journey of Discovery: Do We Know Ourselves?’, providing important information on what one can do to know oneself, as well as personality and character types.

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “If we look at conflict from a positive perspective, we turn that conflict into an opportunity”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that trauma and conflict have both a threat and an opportunity dimension, stating, “If we focus on the threat dimension, we cannot resolve the conflict; it becomes something that blocks us and harms our mental health. If we look at conflict from a positive perspective, we turn that conflict into an opportunity. This is closely related to personality structures. The moment you correct your outlook on events, you make the conflict an occasion for your own strengthening.”

## **Humanity's 2 psychosocial discoveries: Family and State…**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that humanity has made two psychosocial discoveries: “One of them is the family, which has existed since creation. The other is the state... It is a very important discovery that people found as a result of conflicts, and global peace has been achieved through it. If there is no state for large masses, chaos emerges because there is no regulatory body. Prioritizing the state means prioritizing laws and rules.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Many conflicts are related to educational mistakes starting from childhood…”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that every person has a tendency to create conflict, stating that the being who creates the most conflict is a child. Prof. Dr. Tarhan pointed out that children raised like rulers of the house, whose every wish is met, and to whom everything is said 'yes', can cause physical harm to family members or those around them when they grow up. “I have witnessed children raised without rules, discipline, and responsibility under the guise of freedom. Afterwards, that child sees himself as the center of the world. Many conflicts are related to educational mistakes starting from childhood.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Let's not be afraid of conflicts; let's manage them”**

“Let's not be afraid of conflicts, but let's manage them,” said Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that people who do not know themselves often use phrases like ‘what's there to be sad about, don't worry about it’, ‘you exaggerate everything’, ‘it's not that big of a deal’, and continued his speech as follows:

“We often encounter these phrases. People use them to comfort others. However, before saying these, one should try to understand by asking ‘why’. The first step to knowing oneself is to investigate the cause of an event. If we don't investigate the cause, events control us; if we investigate the cause, we control the events.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We become human through social learning…”**

Reminding that personality has temperament and character dimensions, Tarhan said, “The temperament dimension is hereditary, and existing tendencies need to be trained. Learning is also important in character. We become human through social learning. Cases of feral children are proof of this. It shows how important a person's family is. Terms like humanity, conscience, morality, being a good person are not genetic; they are learned later. Genetically, we have potential. For example, a monkey cannot become human even if it stays among people for a thousand years, but a human cannot develop if not among people.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We all have a narcissistic core within us”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the human brain is programmed for survival, not for happiness, and said, “If we want to be happy, we will use our brain in that direction.”

Tarhan also noted that humanity's greatest psychosocial need is the need for self-transcendence, and said the following:

“If a person can transcend themselves, they become happy. If they only pursue self-satisfaction, they do not become happy. If a person strives towards goals and purposes that allow them to transcend themselves, they will be both happy and contribute to society. We all have a narcissistic core within us. Everyone tends to see themselves as the center of the world. Narcissism is not investing love in society. Anyone who only invests love in themselves becomes egocentric. For example, some people make narcissistic investments in their bodies. They care so much about their physical health that if a pimple appears, they become depressed. Such people cannot be happy.”

## **Kind words and approaches activate the brain's reward center!**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that appreciating beauty, gratitude, hope, humor, and spirituality increase a person's resilience against difficulties, drawing attention to the similarities between kindergarten and the school of life. Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that teachings like ‘don't take what doesn't belong to you’ and ‘apologize if you hurt your friend’ develop children's social intelligence, and that these teachings also have equivalents in adulthood.

Emphasizing that what stimulates the human brain the most is not the expected reward, but the unexpected reward, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan concluded his words as follows:

“Addictions form because unexpected reward situations are most triggered by narcotic substances. However, even the anticipation of unexpected rewards makes that person happy. Those who work day and night in laboratories, who make discoveries, are very happy with unexpected rewards like Nobel prizes, with surprises, and dopamine is activated in the brain. If a person smiles at another unexpectedly, dopamine is secreted in the brain, and the person feels very good. As a culture, we do not approach our loved ones and close ones with good behaviors and kind words, thus not activating the reward-related area in their brains. Whereas, if we did this, healthy, secure relationships would emerge.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “A healthy individual creates a healthy society”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, who delivered the opening speech of Psychology Days, drew attention to how loneliness within crowds leads to conflicts. Güngör stated that conflicts within people turn into incompatibility and unhappiness.

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said, “The problems an individual experiences in their inner world reflect onto their surroundings, social life, and social environment. Problems in the social environment reflect further up to mass-level problems. Conflicts at each layer feed into each other, leading to global conflicts.”

Stating that Erich Fromm expressed that a healthy society starts with the individual, Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said, “A healthy individual creates a healthy society. Therefore, if we want to create healthy structures at a societal, mass level, we need to start with the individual. A person's good culturalization from the moment of birth, the positive direction of their psychology, good education, and the correct channeling and nurturing of their consciousness – all these influence each other.”

## **Prof. Dr. Güngör: “We are collectively mobilized to solve problems with a human-centered approach”**

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör noted that all branches of science support each other interdisciplinarily at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, explaining that with digital technologies, a process of integrating different disciplines anew is underway.

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör also stated that they are trying to ensure interdisciplinary interaction, saying, “With a human-centered perspective, we are all collectively mobilized to find solutions to the problems of the individual, society, and the world on a global scale. Our human-centered approach will perhaps transcend Üsküdar Üniversitesi and somehow provide an opportunity for us to address certain problems at a global level.”

## **Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan: “Brain-based health expenditures are expected to reach 16 trillion dollars by 2030”**

In her opening speech, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan stated that the 7th Psychology Days is one of the brand organizations of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Dr. Arıboğan said, “We are on one of those special days where the sciences of psychology and psychiatry, which are among the most important components of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, manifest themselves together,” emphasizing that the theme ‘The Conflict Within Us’ is one of the important dynamics of political science, sociology, philosophy, and international relations.

Prof. Dr. Arıboğan touched upon the following points in her speech:

“Contradictions are one of the existential foundations of this world we live in. The transformation of contradictions into conflicts, and conflicts into wars, occurs at certain stages and processes. In this symposium, the conflict within us, that is, the situations in our minds individually, will generally be analyzed. However, as a political scientist and an international relations expert working on political psychology, I also try to analyze what these conflicts and contradictions in the world bring to us, and what kind of world they foresee us living in.” She said.

## **Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “Behind Israel's policy in Palestine lies a diseased state of mind”**

Arıboğan stated that there are many motifs we try to learn and understand, saying, “Behind Israel's policy in Palestine today lies a great mass psychology, a trauma. There is a diseased state of mind reflected by a trauma.”

## **Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “Mental health expenditures are double defense expenditures”**

Arıboğan drew attention to global defense expenditures and compared them with mental health expenditures. Arıboğan used the following expressions: “The fact that defense expenditures have reached 2.5 trillion dollars indicates that wars will continue. However, according to recent reports, today, brain-based health expenditures alone worldwide, generally for psychological disorders but also including diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, are double defense expenditures, at 5 trillion dollars. By 2030, expenditures in this area are expected to reach 16 trillion dollars. Such symposiums can not only show how we can turn our individual mental states positive and reach a point we call post-traumatic growth by feeding from those conflicts but also play an important guiding role for our wider audience.” She said.

## **Lecturer Murat Otoğlu: “The conflict within us is a phenomenon that makes us grow…”**

Psychology Club Advisor Lecturer Murat Otoğlu began his speech by thanking Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, saying, “We are organizing the 7th edition this year. As every year, it is organized in partnership with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Psychology Club. Our Professor Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan greatly helped us create our theme.”

Reminding that we started the 21st century with wars, Lecturer Murat Otoğlu continued his speech as follows:

“There is an external conflict, and the conflict within us always exists. We cannot escape the conflict within us. We also need the conflict within us somewhat because this conflict is one that makes us grow. Conflict is present in each stage of development. The influence of the environment is very important to overcome this conflict healthily. Individuals who can overcome this conflict healthily can step into the next stage in a healthy way. If we can learn to use and control it correctly, this conflict is a necessary phenomenon that makes us grow.”
