## Özet

**Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan was a guest on the program titled “Living with the Quran and Sunnah Seminars 4,” organized by the Istanbul Science and Culture Foundation every second Saturday of the month at the IICF conference hall. **Making evaluations under the title “Changing world, youth, family ‘What Awaits Us?’ ” **Tarhan said; “Everything is changing very fast. If we want to keep young people within the belief system, we need to be good role models instead of giving them advice. Instead of giving them orders, we need to offer them options. In the family, this is called ‘opportunity education.’ We will turn every event into an opportunity and focus on the child’s education.**” Tarhan added that our name is Muslim, but our way of life is not; we are culturally Muslim, but not mentally, stating that now is not the time to escape from the world and save ourselves.

**“We are culturally Muslim, but not mentally.”**

Speaking about the importance of the conception of God in the hybrid program, which attracted great interest, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “There are 4,300 religions in the world. All religions claim to be true. The methods of reasoning are what will decide this. The conception of God is important. We find the true conception of Allah among all religions. All arrows point science to monotheism. When we look at monotheism, 55 percent of the Quran is monotheism. It leads to monotheism, and in monotheism, if there must be a God, there must be an external reality with current methods of reasoning. In such a case, what kind of God should it be to be able to create? It should not be a part of this universe and not be of the same kind as the universe. Surah Al-Ikhlas says; “Allah will not be in need of anyone, everyone will be in need of Him. He will be able to control everything, and be closer to everything than its jugular vein.” Only such a conception of Allah is true. That is why Bediüzzaman Said Nursi insisted on Asmaul Husna and Tawhid. Currently, most people in Turkey, even 80%, are Western-minded. Their name is Muslim. We are culturally Muslim, but not mentally Muslim. Our current education system has no concern for raising sensitive and compassionate people. There is no such thing as educating people to find God using their intellect. Only the actors of traditional education have changed. We have a completely decayed education system. Young people raised in such a situation are no different from a young person raised in the Netherlands.”

**“The world has witnessed the collapse of materialism”**

Tarhan, speaking about the world being in a new quest and the necessity for us to present this quest, said; “Currently, in the USA, intelligent design courses have been introduced in schools by court order because evolution does not explain everything. In 2014, Columbia and Arizona Universities jointly published a [**post-materialist science manifesto**](https://uskudar.edu.tr/tr/icerik/7560/materyalist-bilim-anlayisinin-modasi-gecmis-olamaz-mi). Materialism does not explain everything. They published a manifesto stating that post-materialist science is necessary. We are in contact with them. We want to hold a meeting together. What does this mean? In fact, the world has seen the collapse of materialism. It is in a new quest, and we need to present this quest to it. If we explain the truths to them using methods of reasoning in this quest, the quest for truth must be sparked. Therefore, prejudices have dispersed. Everyone will accept whatever the truths are. In such situations, it is a sin for us not to tell the truth, but we must tell the truth correctly. For example, if you find a medicine, you need to administer it intravenously to the patient; if you give it orally, it will be useless. If you give it intravenously, it will cure the patient. Therefore, you need to give the right medicine, in the right way, at the right time. Similarly, we need to present these truths correctly. Let’s change our rote learning a bit. Of course, the service in the city is important and should continue. Beyond this, we need to ponder how to explain this truth to Western minds and people who think like the West. We also need to pave the way for those who do this. In such situations, we shouldn’t criticize them for a small thing and break their motivation.”

**“There is no family life anymore, there is cohabitation”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made statements about household fragility in the world and Turkey; “Currently, all decision-makers around the world act short-term and think short-term, not long-term. That, of course, comes with a price, but in the USA, the CIA conducts a global trends survey every year. According to that survey, it looks at where the world is going and positions itself accordingly. It writes or updates its strategy accordingly. We don't have such global trends here. If we go on in the style of 'how do I save today,' we will pay a much higher price. Hopefully, we won't pay a heavy price. In Northern European countries, there are studies on household fragility. Households of 1, 2, or 5 people are given as examples. I also looked at household fragility in Turkey. In the last five years, household fragility has rapidly increased here. That is, houses with 5-person households are decreasing, and 1-person households are increasing. Currently, in terms of household fragility, in places like Sweden and Norway, most people are single-person families. There are no 2-3 person families. The out-of-wedlock birth rate is 59% in France, 69% in Iceland, and 56% in Sweden and Norway. These are born outside of marriage. In Norway, there are heated baby boxes. When a baby is born, they leave it there so it doesn't die. The state has put such baby boxes. Because there is no family life anymore, there is cohabitation. As a result, the children who grow up are without a mother or father... In France, they no longer register as mother and father in the population records, but as parent1 and parent2. In Sweden and Norway, children are taught 'caregiver' instead of the word 'mother'. Because when a child says 'mother', they are looking for a mother who embraces, cuddles, and loves with affection. We work here with children under state protection. All those children used to hug us and call us mother, father. Because there is a quest for a safe harbor from a mother and father. Those places cannot provide it. Personal care is very good, but spiritual care cannot be provided.”

**“Now is not the time to escape from the world and save ourselves”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, touching upon the necessity to explain to humanity that Western tenets are not the solution, said; “We will take risks for Allah. We will be in social life, and we will tell the truths. It is the same on the internet. If you display what you eat and yourself on the internet, your ego swells, which is very dangerous. The American Psychological Association currently considers making more than three self-descriptive posts a day on social media as “[narcissism](https://www.nevzattarhan.com/icimizdeki-narsistik-cekirdek-yaptigimiz-sebepsiz-iyiliklerle-kuculur.html).” If you talk about your cause, your ideals, and good and beautiful things instead of yourself, you are serving even here. Someone emailed me recently; ‘I have a 15-year-old nephew. He studied in primary and secondary school emphasizing values education. Now, at 15, he has started drinking alcohol, doesn't come home and says he has become an atheist. What should we do?’ he asked. When you investigate, there is so much background to it. It means we couldn't make the child love good things. If we can't make him love them, we can't make him do them. Mehmet Akif Ersoy has a very beautiful saying; ‘To convince Western people, first, you must know Western tenets. You will show the falsities of Western tenets and then explain the verses of the Quran.’ It's a tremendous observation. The West currently has values it accepts like sacred verses. Against these, we have the verses of the Quran. We will explain to humanity that Western tenets are not the solution. Then we will say this is the solution. This happens by living it, not by avoiding it. Now is not the time to escape from the world and save ourselves…”

**“Our name is Muslim, but our way of life is not like a Muslim’s”**

Tarhan, speaking about the Metaverse potentially ushering in a new era if it takes hold in the world, said; “Something called Metaverse has emerged. We see classic views saying these are games of Dajjal, works of Dajjal, and so on. However, the metaverse is technology. Technology itself is neutral. If you use it for good, it serves good; if you use it for evil, it serves evil. It changes here according to your intention. The Metaverse is such that, if it really takes hold, it will indeed start a new era in the world. Because everyone will have an avatar, they will go there with that avatar, wander around, shop, use bitcoins. They will open a fixed account in their name, and then, for example, many places on the Istanbul Strait have been sold there. They sold them for money, and it was cheap. If it takes hold, it will make life easier. Whether we want it or not, the West will come and find the Quran because it is a place for seeking truth. Either doomsday will break out, or it will find it. For this reason, let's at least produce a solution by saying, 'Look, it exists.' This is the only thing we can do. Our name is Muslim now, but our way of life is not like a Muslim’s. Let's consider it especially for Turkey. We receive many patients due to this health crisis. I see that currently, 'wardrobe Islam' prevails superficially.”

**“This world is actually the Metaverse of the afterlife”**

Tarhan, speaking about a wise person investing for the afterlife, said; “When we look, the afterlife is real life; we have come to this world wearing our avatars. When this world ends, we will shed our avatars and move on to real life. The world is an illusion, a fallacy, and a deception. Here, everything we call matter, everything we do, is all together a fake thing like the Metaverse. Real life awaits us. What does a wise person do? They invest for the afterlife. A person who does not invest for the afterlife means they are not using their mind, and they will pay the price for it. Therefore, the most important trade is spiritual trade. But this also changes with a single intention. You will pay attention to what is forbidden (haram) and permissible (halal), you will fulfill your religious obligations (fard); then, your daily work when you wake up in the morning, your demeanor and attitude if you are teaching, everything becomes like charity (sadaqa). There is such a tremendous opportunity, spiritual trade. And because it is like lending to Allah, Allah can return the loan to whichever servant He wishes, many times over.”

**“Justice begins at home, not in court”**

Tarhan, speaking about the expression of love needing to be fair, said; “Northern European countries, in particular, are much more advanced in terms of work ethic, keeping one's word, and not lying. In our country, it is worse. Our ancestors 200 years ago were not like that. They were examples of good morals. Why did this deteriorate? What corrupts morals is injustice. If there is injustice in the family, if parents favor some children, injustice occurs, and the other child starts to lie. They resort to intrigues. They make this a habit, and their morals deteriorate. If we want to raise our children with good morals, justice begins at home, not in court. For example, we always read Surah Yusuf from the perspective of Prophet Yusuf. Let's also read it from the perspective of Prophet Yaqub. Prophet Yaqub loved Prophet Yusuf very much. He loved him so much that he doted on him to not lose him. His other 11 brothers started to envy him and went and threw him into the well, and Prophet Yaqub's excessive love became his test. The Messenger of Allah did not do that, for example. He goes to the house of a Companion. Children come one after another. He looks at one child and acts coldly. He shows more interest in the other children. The Messenger of Allah says; ‘Do you want your children to love you equally?’ And he says, ‘Yes, I do.’ When he says that, he says; ‘Then you should also love your children equally.’ The expression of love must be fair. You can love one more, but you must make your expression of love fair.”

**Tarhan also signed his books…**

Following the program, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan answered participants' questions. While a gift was presented to Tarhan for his participation and contributions, Tarhan's book ‘Conscience of the Age’ was also distributed to the attendees.

Tarhan, who received great interest, signed his book for his readers. The seminar concluded after souvenir photos were taken.
