## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The family is our last refuge against the attack of modernism”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drew attention to the fact that the coming years pose a serious crisis for Turkey. Tarhan said: “Seminars and meetings on various topics are held on different digital platforms. Therefore, structured, project-based contribution is important. Currently, the fertility rate, which should be 2.1 globally, has fallen below 1.50. This is a serious matter. The coming years represent a very serious crisis for Turkey. It's not just the Year of the Family; our President has already announced it as a 10-year period. Therefore, we need to continue our work on the family issue. There is a modern deviation, a modern attack, targeting the family globally, not just in Turkey. Our family is our last refuge against the attack of modernism. The exhibitionist frenzy brought by modernism, the prominence of egoism and opportunism, and capitalist morality becoming global morality. Capitalist morality is insatiable, irresponsible, and wants to grow limitlessly. A morality that maximizes profit. Kahneman received the Nobel Prize on this subject. Humans are not homo economicus, not economic beings. Not beings that maximize self-interest. Humans are homo psychologicus. Humans also have emotions. It became prominent that humans also act with their emotions when shopping, investing, and making purchasing decisions, but they remain very weak against the winds of capitalism. We are now trying to do this in our own field. It is a part of our vision as a university.”

## **Second danger: Addiction!**

Emphasizing the importance of trainer training, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan mentioned a significant increase in statistics. Tarhan said: “Currently, the second danger is addiction. Addiction severely affects the family. Currently, in the USA and Canada, streets smell of cannabis. To prevent the same thing from happening here, we might be forced to declare a 'Year of Addiction Prevention' in 10 years. Since patients come to us, we see a very significant increase in statistics. We wrote a project with the Ministry of Justice. We wrote a project called 'GÜVENKOR' for supervised release in Hasanpaşa. Here, we want to provide 'training for trainers'. It's not about telling people 'addiction is bad this way, bad that way'. Anti-addiction policies worldwide aim to instill a sense of trust in individuals. When an individual strengthens positive emotions, they don't feel material needs. That is, to provide preventive health services; our modules and everything related to this are ready. We have already published scientific modules on family. They have become a book. Our cities expected to implement this should be able to do so, like Gaziantep Municipality. We conducted trainer training in Gaziantep. Following this, our esteemed Minister Fatma Şahin opened the 'Family Academy'. Anyone who enters there can solve many problems before they escalate. Then our esteemed Minister said, 'Let's open one in Istanbul too'. We are ready to provide trainer training. This is also a social project. It's not that people should constantly come to us. We are thinking of conducting trainer training so that it can then proceed systematically. We can do projects in this way.”

## **Our aim is to prevent societal problems from growing…**

Tarhan stated that a person who succeeds in transcending themselves makes both themselves and others happy; “Students can carry out activities in various places in schools. Our aim is to prevent societal problems from growing by involving our students. After it becomes a clinical case, there is treatment, but it is very difficult. That is, social preventive mental health before it becomes a clinical case. In fact, this is called prosociality in the literature. This prosociality work we are doing involves touching people in advance to prevent them from becoming ill; these are preventive works. A person who can transcend themselves can do this. A person who only thinks of their own self-interest does not do this. At the top of Maslow's hierarchy was self-actualization. However, Maslow changed this hierarchy before his death. The USA published this in 2017. They had kept it hidden until then. Because capitalist morality thought that transcending and actualizing oneself would increase cooperation, transaction costs, and decrease efficiency, it never wanted this. They saw that this time suicides were increasing, illnesses were increasing, so they published it saying, 'We need to do these things'. Now, at the very top, they put self-transcendence, not self-actualization. When a person transcends themselves at the peak of social needs, they are already happy. Neuroscience studies have also confirmed this. When a person succeeds in transcending themselves, they make both themselves and others happy. The chemicals related to happiness in the brain, i.e., our neurological sensitivity, are created in that way. It was not created for self-serving work. Our neurological sensitivity is created to work by also considering others. Therefore, these studies are actually aligned with our innate nature (fitrah). Doing this in accordance with our innate nature means working in harmony with our own innate nature, our biological nature, and our neurological structure.” he stated.

## **Üsküdar District Governor Adem Yazıcı: “The issue of social contribution is truly very important”**

Üsküdar District Governor Adem Yazıcı, stating that Üsküdar Üniversitesi contributes to very important projects; “At the heart of our service and work are our youth, and before that, education. Our Üsküdar Üniversitesi is very pioneering and valuable in this regard. The issue of social contribution is truly very important. We often look critically at questions like 'where is society going, where is youth going?', but where is our responsibility in this regard, what is our duty? More accurately, we don't feel much responsibility for ourselves. We always expect most of it from the state, we defer it and look for reasons in others, but we don't often ask 'where are we, what are we doing?' I believe our universities have a very important mission in this respect. Undoubtedly, academic success and activities are the first priority, but in this context, which we consider as social responsibility on a scale we call social responsibility, I am pleased to see that Üsküdar Üniversitesi continues to contribute to very important projects, just as it has in the past.” he said.

## **“We have projects targeting the fundamental strata of society”**

Yazıcı, drawing attention to the great importance of efforts to establish the family on solid foundations; “The concept of society is truly very important. By the directive of our President, we declared 2025 as the Year of the Family. Later, I would like to remind you once again that this should be spread over a 10-year period, not just one year, and there will be a special 10-year study on the concept of family. The stronger the foundations we build for the family, the stronger our state and nation will be. Raising good, ethical, personable, distinctive, characterful, qualified, and high-quality individuals should be our fundamental duty and responsibility. The responsibility of all our educational institutions should be so. We are not an industrial city. In terms of raising qualified people and workforce, our universities, including primary and secondary education, have a very serious responsibility. At this point, we are making every effort we can. Especially since it is the Year of the Family, we have various projects targeting the most fundamental layers of society. As the District Governorship, at this point, our Üsküdar Üniversitesi, whose founding purpose is to bring societal happiness and welfare to the forefront, and especially given my professor's field of expertise, we are ready for all kinds of cooperation.” he said.

## **Our greatest treasure is our youth…**

Adem Yazıcı, speaking about the need to raise a very well-qualified population; “Statistical studies show that, looking at our population growth rate, our current population of 85 million is projected to be 65 million in 2100. That is, under normal circumstances, we should exceed 100 million. But this population growth rate actually needs to be revised as a decline rate. We are decreasing. Therefore, we are gradually losing ground. Our greatest treasure is our people, our youth, our population. This recommendation of ours is our most valuable asset. Therefore, we must not lose this, and we must also raise a very well-qualified population. There are very serious obstacles concerning erosion. Primarily, as my professor mentioned, including addiction. This addiction should not only be considered as substance addiction. The categories are now starting to multiply. We have an addiction combat board under the auspices of our District Governorship. We hold meetings every two months. Participation is also provided by our university. Therefore, we are ready for any kind of help and cooperation that falls to us in this regard.” he stated.

Later, **Mahmut Ekşi, Chairman of the Science and Virtue Foundation,** stated that the foundation tradition is the most deeply rooted element of social contribution, and cooperation with universities carries this legacy into the future.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-13-250917113919.png)

**İshak Koçoğlu, İTO Council Member and Businessman,** expressed the business world's interest in social contribution projects, emphasizing the need for universities and the entrepreneurship ecosystem to develop joint projects.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/erdal-curgatay-250917114014.png)

**The President of Üsküdar Platform and Istanbul BİNYAD President,** said that projects initiated with the contribution of local actors can grow nationally and accelerate social development.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-15-250917114524.png)

**Yüksel Arslan, President of the Çanakkale and Thrace Education and Culture Confederation,** stated that civil society coming together with universities is one of the most powerful tools in solving societal problems.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-14-250917114151.png)

**KOSGEB Vice President Selim Serkan Ercan** stated that SMEs can directly benefit from University-NGO collaborations, and sustainable business models can develop through such meetings. Ercan also pointed out that Üsküdar Üniversitesi is the university that produces the most entrepreneurs in Turkey.

## **Locally implemented projects also set an example at the national level**

At the meeting, it was emphasized that University-Public-NGO cooperation makes significant contributions to the sustainability of the social contribution vision. At the same time, drawing attention to Üsküdar's social and cultural heritage, it was stated that locally implemented projects serve as an example at the national level.

Finally, it was emphasized that social contribution, as the university's third mission, is the most important pillar of the vision 'Science for society, impact for the future'.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and a group photo.
