## Özet

**Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, participated in the Azerbaijan-Turkey Education Brotherhood Forum held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Tarhan, the sole participant from Turkey, made striking evaluations to educators from different regions of Azerbaijan regarding the topic of “Positive Psychology in Education.” Pointing out that culture is transferred to children not by family and the education system but by social media, Tarhan stated that individualism is increasing globally along with hedonism. Tarhan, who also addressed artificial intelligence technologies, expressed that this development, which could affect many professions, would not be able to replace the field of psychology. **

## **“Our Brain Learns with Algorithms”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who stated that the brain learns with algorithms at the program attended by various NGO representatives and deputies from Azerbaijan, emphasized the importance of values. Tarhan added that the most important thing that makes a person human is the environment in which they are raised and the memories they accumulate from childhood, and that what shapes a person are the life scenarios they have experienced and learned since childhood. Tarhan began his speech by saying, “For example, theater is a great art form. There are life scenarios in theater. Our brain also has a learning model. This has been better understood with research conducted in recent years. Our brain learns with algorithms. What we call an algorithm is a structure similar to software. Just as you upload software to a computer and it works according to that software, our brain works similarly. The algorithms that enable learning in our brain are called values, ancient culture. Whatever system of values you instill in a child during childhood, that child will become such a person in the future. Bahtiyar Vahabzade has a very beautiful saying, 'You should raise such a child that the homeland will be proud of them when they grow up.' That is, to raise a child that the homeland will be proud of… This is only possible by correctly transmitting our values and culture.”

## **“Popular Culture Uploads Its Own Algorithms to Our Brains” **

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of transmitting culture to children, said; “We are currently in an era where popular culture uploads its own algorithms to our brains. Social media teaches us how to live, how to have fun, and what kind of person we should be. However, it is our families and our national education system, not social media, that should teach us this. Here, the most important role falls primarily to families and secondarily to teachers. Therefore, teachers are important here. Because they manage the classroom. The teacher is the captain, leader, and manager of the class. Especially primary school students see their teachers as heroes until the age of 10. After their parents, the teacher becomes a role model for them. They learn by imitating and repeating them. That's why it is very important to be able to transfer our culture, history, and values to them.”

## **“Hedonic Happiness is a Short-Term Happiness”**

Tarhan, stating that hedonism is becoming widespread globally, said; “California Syndrome has four main symptoms. The first of these is hedonism, or pleasure-seeking. It is making pleasure a philosophy of life. The understanding that what one likes is good, and what one dislikes is bad. This approach can pose a danger if it becomes a life philosophy. Aristotle spoke of two types of happiness 2,500 years ago. One is hedonic happiness, the other is eudaimonic happiness. Hedonic happiness is pleasure-based happiness. The understanding of ‘Let me eat this to be happy, let me wear this to be happy, let me have fun to be happy.’ This is a short-term happiness. Neuroscience confirms this. This type of happiness causes dopamine to be secreted in the brain. This dopamine secretion is temporary; when the secretion stops, the brain wants it again. This leads to addiction. One of the main reasons for the increase in substance addiction and drug use worldwide is the spread of hedonism.”

## **“There is a Global Epidemic of Selfishness”**

Tarhan, addressing the major problems of the age, said; “The second symptom of California Syndrome is egoism, or selfishness. Currently, there is a serious selfishness and egocentrism among young people. In other words, there is a global epidemic of selfishness. People say, ‘My interest first, my benefit first, me first.’ The third symptom is loneliness. This is also one of the major problems of our age. In 2021, a Ministry of Loneliness was established in the UK. A similar ministry was established in Japan. Currently, Japan is one of the places with the highest number of suicide cases in the world. Elderly suicides, in particular, are very high. Japan's population has aged considerably. The situation is similar in Europe. In fact, in China, more adult diapers are reportedly sold than baby diapers. While humanity is in such a course, we need to ask the question, ‘Where are we going?’ Because people are becoming increasingly lonely. Last year, the Turkish Language Association conducted a survey in Turkey. As a result of the survey, the word that received more than 1 million votes was ‘crowded loneliness.’ Even in a crowded, vibrant, and social society like Turkey, people now feel lonely within the crowd. As Eastern societies, we are a nation that loves warm relationships, conversation, dining together, and sharing. Despite this, the disease of crowded loneliness has reached us as well.”

## **“We Tried to Combine Our Values with Modern Psychology”**

Tarhan, explaining the place of positive psychology in his works, said; “Although positive psychology is presented as a systematized branch of science in the West, at its core lies the ancient wisdom of the East. Westerners, taking and interpreting the teachings of Rumi, Yunus Emre, the Holy Quran, and our prophet, created positive psychology by placing these values within a methodological framework. It's a good thing they did. When I saw this development, a pang of regret arose within me. Because I realized that these ancient values already existed within us, but we had not been able to systematize them. With this motivation, my book ‘Mesnevi Terapi’ entered the best-seller list not only in Turkey but also in Indonesia today. In the book, based on Rumi's stories, we aim for people to recognize their wrong thought patterns and transform them. In the field of psychology, there is a scale known as PBQ, which measures individuals' faulty beliefs. With this approach, we aim to develop an individual's emotional intelligence and mental health. Because establishing correct thought patterns is an important step that prevents people from getting sick. Similarly, with works such as ‘Yunus Terapi, Aşk Terapi,’ we tried to combine our values with modern psychology. This is not just a cultural synthesis but also an understanding supported by neuroscientific data. This is also the biggest reason why we teach positive psychology as a course in universities. To build a state of well-being centered on humanity…” he continued.

## **“The Marriage of Mathematics with Psychology Gave Birth to Artificial Intelligence”**

Tarhan, stating that artificial intelligence will create a revolution, said; “Just as the printing press changed the world, artificial intelligence will change the world in the same way. It needs to be used in a good, right, and beautiful direction. Its combination with positive psychology is a very interesting situation. The marriage of mathematics with logic gave birth to the computer. The marriage of mathematics with psychology, on the other hand, gave birth to artificial intelligence. That's why artificial intelligence is a synthesis of mathematics and psychology. We call this computational psychiatry. That is, the two working together. Because artificial intelligence imitates humans. It imitates human behavior. Artificial intelligence will replace many professions, but it will not be able to replace the profession of psychology.”

## **“The Greatest Power of the Universe is the Power of Information”**

Tarhan, answering questions from the participants, pointed out that the universe was established with a design from beginning to end. Tarhan said; “Quantum physics shows us that the universe exists by design. The greatest power of the universe is the power of information. We all know that matter has three states: solid, liquid, and gas. In fact, the fourth state of matter is the state of information. When the universe was created, there was first information. First, knowledge was created. Information is first. Second, there is mathematics. The structure that calculates everything. Third comes design. The universe is built with a design from beginning to end. Fourth, there is energy, which is physics. Fifth, there is matter, which is chemistry. Finally, there is life, which is biology. The universe was built in this order. This is why design is very important. We need to do our work by designing it in advance, just like in this universal order. For example, the Germans have a method. They draw projects for three years and build in one year. Because they calculate every possibility in advance. In art, music, science, everything is first imagined, designed, then realized. For design to exist here, there must also be a purpose. If there is a purpose, there is design. Purpose means 'maksat' in Arabic. The word 'iktisat' (economy) also comes from the root 'maksat'. That is, you will first determine your purpose. Once the purpose is clear, you can manage resources. You will know your strengths and weaknesses. Then resource management comes into play. The basic concept in resource management is input-output control. Think of a pool: input modulation, output modulation. If you do these well, you will also manage resources well. I always tell young people, 'The person who manages their resources best achieves the most accurate result in life.' We have three basic resources in life. First, our mental resources; second, our psychological resources; and third, our social resources. If we can manage our mental capital, our psychological strength, and our social environment well, we will also manage our lives correctly.”

## **“Today, People Walk Around with Social Masks”**

Tarhan, explaining the difficulty of maturing amidst abundance, said; “Past generations matured amidst scarcity. Current generations have to mature amidst abundance. This is actually more difficult. There is a very important pattern here. ‘Earn with your labor, have your values. Live with your honor.’ This should be a roadmap in our lives. Young people have achieved many things easily now, but this is not a threat; on the contrary, it is a great opportunity for them. Because they start life with a plus 1, they will do many things better. The most important thing for young people is to put in effort, get tired, and have ego ideals and goals. ‘What kind of person do you want to be when you reach the end of your life? How do you want to be remembered?’ People who think this way have abstract goals. Current modernism teaches us concrete goals. Own a house, own a car. The truths taught by modernism are money, goods, property, status, gender. One shows oneself on social media. One tries to prove one's existence that way. This is actually a false proof. Today, people walk around with social masks. Their real faces are not visible. They have social masks. There are no real characters. In such a situation, young people should have high goals. Intermediate goals like a house, car, or profession can also exist. A young person without a goal is like a ship without a destination, carried away by the current. Its destination port is unknown, it has no compass. The winds drag it away. Here, a ship with a clear goal and a compass takes the wind behind it and goes towards its destination.”

## **“The Most Effective Language is the Language of State/Being”**

Finally, Tarhan offered advice to educators; “We tell our children what is good, right, and beautiful, but do we ourselves live by it? Here, the most effective language is not just the spoken word, but the language of state/being. The language of state/being is to be a good example. For instance, a father talked for three hours to explain the virtue of speaking little to his child. The child laughed and said, ‘Dad, you can't manage to speak little, how can I?’ That's the point. We set an example not with what we say, but with what we do. Children follow the footsteps of their parents and teachers, not just their words. They see their behaviors, their language of state/being. If teachers do not live by what they say, they will have no influence on young people. To be effective, we must first live by what we say. If we do not live by what we say, we cannot build trust either.”
