## Özet

**Evaluating the fear and anxiety experienced after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake off Silivri and the psychology of earthquakes during a live broadcast he participated in, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated, “Post-earthquake psychology consists of three stages. Acute stress experienced within the first 15 days is natural and usually resolves on its own. If this situation exceeds four weeks, there is a risk of post-traumatic stress disorder. If it goes beyond eight weeks, professional clinical help should be sought.”**

**Prof. Dr. Tarhan also criticized the conflicting statements made in public regarding earthquake predictions, saying, "Every expert makes statements looking from their own perspective. Such scientific discussions should be held in closed environments, in scientific platforms, among experts, not on screens. Official institutions should evaluate expert opinions in light of scientific data and share them with the public in a clear, reassuring language. Otherwise, more anxiety and distrust arise in the public."**

## **It is necessary to look at earthquakes from a 360-degree angle**

Stating that it is necessary to look at earthquakes from a 360-degree angle, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The tendency to look only from the perspective of earth sciences increases anxiety. Post-earthquake psychology consists of three stages. Acute stress experienced within the first 15 days is natural and usually resolves on its own. If this situation exceeds four weeks, there is a risk of post-traumatic stress disorder. If it goes beyond eight weeks, professional clinical help should be sought.”

## **Earthquake fear varies according to personality structure**

Stating that earthquake fear varies according to personality structure, Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that some individuals may experience internal panic despite appearing calm externally, and in such cases, composure is a defense mechanism, but it can turn into chronic stress if a solution is not found.

Pointing out that feelings of uncertainty, helplessness, and hopelessness have a great impact on the increase of earthquake fear, Prof. Dr. Tarhan gave the example of Japan, stating that strong systems are effective in reducing society's fear of earthquakes.

## **One should not believe without questioning! **

Evaluating the conflicting statements made in public regarding earthquake predictions, Prof. Dr. Tarhan continued as follows:

"Every expert makes statements looking from their own perspective. Such scientific discussions should be held in closed environments, in scientific platforms, among experts, not on screens. Official institutions should evaluate expert opinions in light of scientific data and share them with the public in a clear, reassuring language. Otherwise, more anxiety and distrust arise in the public. One says ‘Leave Istanbul’. The other says ‘It's over and done with.’ When they say this, they are looking only from their own perspective. They act according to the worst-case scenario. They project their own state of mind regarding the worst-case scenario onto society. Therefore, one should not believe everything that current earthquake experts say without questioning. That means neither the overly optimistic nor the overly pessimistic ones.”

## **New stress factors added to society**

Stating that chronic stress after the earthquake creates serious effects on society, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “There is a chronic state of unhappiness in society. We are already a turbulent society, and new stress factors have been added to this. Such situations create group stress, leading to an increase in arguments, fights, and acts of violence.”

Pointing out that existing crime rates in society may increase further, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that leadership plays a critical role during such periods. Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “If society does not trust its leaders and decision-makers, the crisis deepens further. If leaders hide the truth, anxiety increases. Nobody can feel at ease where trust is lost. Currently, there is no sense in Turkey that earthquake-related plans and projects have been prepared." he used the expressions.

## **Communication systems were insufficient!**

Evaluating the criticisms that communication systems were insufficient after the earthquake, Tarhan said, "Internet and phone lines collapsed. Afterwards, only apologies came. The regulatory and supervisory role of the state in preparing for such disasters is very important. Citizens pay their taxes; in return, they expect effective crisis management."

## **Brain exercises suggestion for earthquakes**

Stating that 'acceptance exercises' should be done to cope with earthquake fear, Prof. Dr. Tarhan recommended the 'Acceptance Commitment Therapy' techniques also used by the Japanese.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan explained the basic steps of the exercises as follows:

“Approaching fear with compassion; instead of rejecting fear, it is necessary to accept it. Children, especially, are shaped by their parents' reactions. If parents are calm, the child also manages fear more easily. Breathing and muscle relaxation exercises; communicating with the body to remember stressful situations overcome in the past, increasing feelings of gratitude is important. Positive thoughts like 'I am healthy now, I am conscious now' relax the mind. Creating a mental sanctuary; feeling that one is part of a greater meaning empowers the individual. Trusting a higher being, as in belief systems, seeing that there is order in the universe, calms a person. Knowing that one is not alone in a moment of panic is very important.”

## **Social contact reduces trauma's effect!**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that they observed an increased need for people to be with their families on the night of the earthquake, saying, "This is an instinctive behavior. Social contact reduces the impact of trauma."

## **Traumas intensify the search for meaning…**

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stated that people's search for meaning intensifies during moments of trauma, saying, "In such moments, one re-evaluates life, values, relationships, and self-perception. Practicing fear acceptance exercises, approaching oneself with compassion, and evaluating the past positively are important.”

Stating that individuals with a high sense of control experience fear more intensely, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “This situation is frequently seen especially in panic disorder. A businessman managing a company with a billion-dollar budget once said he couldn't manage his own blood pressure. Because there are things a person can and cannot control.”

## **How should trauma management be for children?**

Noting that the way children are affected by traumatic events like earthquakes varies according to age groups, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said that children aged 0-6 years old need attachment relationships the most. Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated, "During an earthquake, children must be with their parents. Being with them increases the secretion of oxytocin, the hormone of trust and love, in the brain."

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that children over 6 years old begin to question events, saying, "Children in this age group ask questions like 'Why did it happen? Will something happen to me? Will something happen to you?' During this period, instead of silencing children, it is very important to listen to them. It is necessary to allow them to express their feelings, not just talk to them."

Emphasizing that parental attitudes directly affect children's resilience to trauma, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated, "Let's not expect an adult reaction, but let's approach them like adults. The child feeling valued and safe is the most important gain of this period." He also said.

## **What are young people's earthquake anxieties and psychological reactions?**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also made evaluations on young people's earthquake anxieties and psychological reactions, emphasizing that identity questioning and search for meaning experienced by young people, especially during adolescence, are natural.

Stating that adolescence is a stormy period where questions like “Who am I? Where should I go? Why?” are frequently asked, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “For this age group, existential and meaning-seeking questions are an indicator of healthy development. Major events like earthquakes can also trigger these questions. If adolescents are in a safe environment within a group, they support each other. External friendships are more important than family. This is the nature of adolescence. During this period, families should consult teenagers' ideas rather than giving them advice. The sense of belonging should be strengthened with questions like 'What do you think we can do?' This approach even has a therapeutic effect,” he said.

## **Narcissists fear earthquakes more!**

Stating that narcissistic individuals may appear unafraid externally but are among the groups most afraid of earthquakes, Prof. Dr. Tarhan explained, “Narcissistic individuals hide their fears because they feel compelled to appear strong. In reality, they do not possess a strong character; they merely play the role of being strong. In critical moments, such as an earthquake, they may be among those who show the quickest flight response.”

## **Challenges offer an opportunity to grasp a greater meaning! **

Pointing out that Turkey is located in a challenging geography, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the concept of “loneliness in crowds” has become widespread in society recently.

“When earthquake anxiety is added on top, feelings of hopelessness about the future can increase in society. However, Turkey has overcome much larger crises in the past. Great difficulties like the War of Independence and World War I were experienced. In those periods, there was a purpose; now, as a society, we need to determine a new purpose," said Prof. Dr. Tarhan, emphasizing that the difficulties experienced offer people an opportunity to grasp a greater meaning.

## **An embracing, inclusive environment is needed!**

Stating that everyone should question themselves, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “Turkey does not deserve this current atmosphere of tension. Right now, Turkey needs an embracing, inclusive environment. Everyone needs to question themselves. We should think about what these events have taught us.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also drew attention to the disintegration in Turkey's social structure, noting that issues such as the collapse of the family system, young people moving away from marriage, economic difficulties, and loneliness negatively affect the general mood of society.

## **If young people are given a sense of trust and justice, most problems will be solved**

Despite these negativities, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that a common meaning that could ensure social peace might be found, but there is a serious atmosphere of anxiety in society, saying, "Currently, a wartime mentality prevails in society. People cannot feel a sense of trust and hope for the future. Therefore, a new purpose and vision need to be put forward. If people unite around a common purpose, as during the War of Independence, 50% of the stress and events in society will decrease." He added.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, also referring to the risk of society remaining silent, emphasized that one should act with hope without succumbing to pessimism. Stating that the younger generation, in particular, has high expectations for justice, Tarhan concluded his words by saying, "Young people are not bad. They are in search of innocence. If we give them a sense of trust and justice, most problems will be solved."
