## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that dreaming is part of our genetic algorithm, said, “It is not possible for a person not to dream. Everyone dreams; they just might not remember. Dreaming is a physiological characteristic of humans. Sleep rests the body, while dreams rest the soul. True spiritual rest occurs during dreams.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that if a person does not have a mental health problem, there is no need to waste time interpreting dreams, adding, “However, for someone undergoing psychiatric treatment or therapy, dreams can be meaningful.”**

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, discussed the topic of the subconscious and dreams.

## **“Humans are the only living beings aware of their own existence”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that among living beings, particularly mammals, humans are the only ones with consciousness, saying, “No other living being possesses consciousness. Other living beings do not have a concept of time, awareness of past and future, existential awareness, search for meaning, or awareness of death. These are characteristics unique to humans. Humans are the only living beings aware of their own existence. The ability to ask questions like ‘Who am I, where did I come from, where am I going?’ is an indicator of this consciousness. Actions performed unconsciously usually originate from the subconscious. Actions performed knowingly are conscious; those performed unknowingly are unconscious behaviors.”

## **“Consciousness is regarded as a quantum entity”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that these topics were also discussed by psychiatrists like Freud and Jung about 100 years ago, and the relationship between consciousness and the subconscious was addressed, especially in connection with mental illnesses. He added, “Since the 2000s, with the development of neuroscience, new discussions about consciousness have emerged. Today, consciousness is viewed as an entity beyond the brain; in fact, according to some views, it is considered a quantum entity. Consciousness remains one of the most fundamental discussion topics in psychiatry today. Consciousness is, perhaps, the quantum of psychiatry. The subconscious is the source of behaviors that emerge when we try to analyze a person, behaviors that the person sometimes doesn't even expect from themselves. Some people may give automatic responses or exhibit reflexive behaviors without thinking. Conditions like superiority complex or inferiority complex have been linked to subconscious mechanisms. Various defense mechanisms have been developed in psychology to explain these situations.”

## **“Implicit memory stores information we use automatically without being aware of it”**

Tarhan explained that at the point where neuroscience has brought this issue today, the term “implicit memory” is now used instead of “subconscious,” which translates to örtük bellek. He continued, “The counterpart to consciousness is defined as ‘explicit memory,’ or açık bellek. While explicit memory contains information we are aware of and consciously remember, implicit memory stores information we use automatically without being aware of it. The subconscious refers to automatic behaviors that a person performs without thinking. This occurs through neural shortcuts in the brain. In other words, it is not merely a philosophical or abstract subject; it has a neurobiological correlate. How well a person can manage their implicit memory (subconscious) and explicit memory (consciousness) mechanisms determines the extent to which they can control their life.”

## **“A person can suddenly react intensely to someone”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that while the concepts of subconscious and unconscious are sometimes confused, they refer to different things, and he continued:
“A person can suddenly react intensely to someone they are facing. When you analyze this situation, you will see that the person they are reacting to actually physically or behaviorally resembles someone who harmed them in the past. The person is unaware of this, but the subconscious recalls this similarity and creates an automatic reaction. So, even if the person in front of them has not done anything wrong, the individual reacts under the influence of a negative past experience. This happens when the subconscious intervenes. These types of subconscious reactions also have a close relationship with dreams. For this reason, Freud said, ‘Dreams are the royal road to the subconscious.’ According to him, dreams are the easiest and most direct way to reach the subconscious. Jung, on the other hand, stated that there are bridges between consciousness and the subconscious. In other words, both approaches agree that dreams and the subconscious are in a close relationship with each other.”

## **Daydreams are observed in anxious individuals**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that hypnosis, dreams, and sleep are all different states of consciousness, saying, “There are three types of reality. Physical reality; the concrete reality we currently live in. Imaginary reality; the reality we experience while daydreaming. A person daydreams, then realizes the daydream has ended and returns to physical reality. The brain immediately performs a ‘reality test’ here and focuses on the present, on now. Dream reality; during a dream, a person lives as if in another reality. Upon waking, a brief ‘twilight period’ is experienced, and then it is understood that the dream was just a dream. For example, in types of dreams we call serial dreams or lucid dreams, there are brief transitions between consciousness and the subconscious. According to surveys, approximately 40 out of every 100 people report having lucid dreams. This means lucid dreams are not a rare occurrence.”

Tarhan also stated that a person who is awake during the day, although appearing to be daydreaming from the outside, might actually be experiencing a ‘daydream’ in a deeper sense. He said, “This is a condition known as Maladaptive Daydreaming. It is particularly common in anxious individuals. The person oscillates between daydreams and reality, and this situation can also affect their behavior.”

## **Dreams operate outside the concepts of space and time**

Tarhan explained that the realm called “the quantum of consciousness” or “the quantum of mental health” is the world of dreams, and dreams also operate outside the concepts of space and time. He said, “Jung states on this matter, ‘The human soul must have a part that is outside of space and time.’ Here, Jung's definition of ‘soul’ is quite similar to the concept of soul in religious literature. Humans may have come from another energy band, live in physical reality in this world, and transition to another energy plane after death. In other words, human existence is not limited solely to this world. We are just a simulacrum part of this larger equation. Dreams, on the other hand, are the areas where we connect with this equation.”

## **‘Could the universe be a simulation?’**

Pointing to the work of scientists involved in quantum physics, Tarhan explained the following:

“What we observe exists, and what we don’t observe behaves as if it doesn’t exist. Furthermore, at this point, there is also a discussion: Could there be other beings beyond black holes, observing this universe and using superior computer technology? This idea has raised the question in some scientific circles, ‘Could the universe be a simulation?’ These thoughts also echo in sacred texts. When looking at the Qur’an, according to some interpretations, a perspective emerges as if 'We live in the mind of God.' Throughout history, many thinkers have been criticized, and some even declared insane or judged, due to these views. However, today quantum physics allows these questions to be debated again on scientific grounds. Because quantum is a branch of science that attempts to define uncertainties.”

## **How does the brain behave during sleep?**

Tarhan stated that some scientists also ask the question, ‘Is dreaming an area where humans connect with the quantum universe?’ He said, “This situation brings dreams into the common discussion area not only of the subconscious but also of different disciplines such as quantum physics, psychiatry, philosophy, and spirituality. This is why dream laboratories are being established in many places around the world today, and scientific research is being conducted on dreams. How the brain behaves during sleep, especially how it functions during dream periods, is being examined.”

## **Suppressed traumas must be resolved**

Tarhan noted that in therapy processes, attempts are sometimes made to access the subconscious with the conscious mind, but in some difficult cases, especially when suppressed traumas need to be resolved, conscious methods can be insufficient. In such situations, narcoanalysis, a method using anesthesia-like drugs that brings the person to a state of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness, can intervene and an unresolved trauma can be resolved.

## **Relief is experienced when trauma is resolved**

Tarhan stated that the subconscious can act like an encapsulated traumatic network in the brain, and accessing these networks is like draining an abscess. He added, “When trauma is resolved, the person experiences both mental and physical relief. Today, narcoanalysis is rarely used for such conditions. Instead, a more common and safe technique, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), is preferred. In this technique, the right and left brain hemispheres are simultaneously stimulated with sound or eye movements. This allows the person to become aware of and reprocess their suppressed traumatic memories. The common point in all these methods is to create a different state of consciousness in the individual.”

## **“True spiritual rest occurs during dreams”**

Tarhan noted that dreaming is part of our genetic algorithm, saying, “It is not possible for a person not to dream. Everyone dreams; they just might not remember. So much so that even babies born visually impaired can smile in their dreams. The fact that these babies, whose sense of sight has not yet developed and who have not yet recognized life, smile in their sleep, indicates that dreaming is a process related not only to data received from the outside world but also to the brain's internal mechanisms. This situation proves that dreaming is a fundamental function of our brain. The smiling of a baby in a dream, even one who does not yet know abstract concepts, points to an area of the brain that operates beyond space-time. Dreaming is a physiological characteristic of humans. Sleep rests the body, while dreams rest the soul. True spiritual rest occurs during dreams.”

## **“Dreaming is a physiological need”**

Tarhan stated that the subconscious is actually our implicit memory and has a physiological counterpart in our brain. He added, “Dreams are also a result of this implicit memory. Dreaming is a physiological need. By eliminating dreams, you can create schizophrenia-like symptoms in a person. If a person is awakened every time they fall into a dream during REM sleep, this can lead to serious psychological deterioration.”

## **Dreams can be meaningful for someone in therapy**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that if a person does not have a mental health problem, there is no need to waste time interpreting dreams. He explained, “However, for someone undergoing psychiatric treatment or therapy, dreams can be meaningful. For example, if a person encounters a frightening situation in their dream despite not experiencing fear in real life, it is actually a useful motif operating in the subconscious that can be used in therapy. Dreams are often full of symbols. For instance, seeing a lion in a dream can symbolize power and courage; seeing water, compassion; and seeing a dog, the search for trust or friendship. These interpretations are found in dream interpretation books. However, these symbols do not carry the same meaning for every individual. What is important is to interpret the dream in a way that is suitable for the person's own psychological structure.”

## **The rate of being influenced by dreams in our society is very high **

Tarhan noted that people who think negatively generally create negative scenarios related to dreams, while positive-minded individuals tend to interpret their dreams more positively. He added, “However, in our society, the rate of being influenced by dreams is quite high; according to research, this rate can go up to 85 percent. This means that many people can be influenced by dreams and make wrong decisions, even harming their relationships because of them.”

## **Dreams are never meaningless…**

Tarhan stated that dreams are never meaningless and communicate through symbols. He added, “However, if you do not know the language of these symbols, it is not possible to understand dreams. Moreover, these symbols are not universal; they are personal. Dreams are nourished by personal experiences and emotions. They do not use a universal language but are shaped according to the individual’s inner world. Therefore, if you want to understand a dream, you need to decipher what the symbol means for that particular person.”

Tarhan noted that while dream interpretations are an important tool in the analysis phase, they do not always achieve the same success in the treatment process. He said, “For this reason, the evolution of psychoanalysis today is called neuropsychoanalysis. It is now easier to understand the subconscious than in the past. Thanks to developing techniques, it has become possible to access the subconscious through many methods.”

## **Inspiration sometimes arises when awake, sometimes in dreams**

Tarhan drew attention to the concept of prophetic dreams, stating, “A person sees someone in their dream, and the next day that person actually appears before them. The rate of people experiencing such dreams in society is around 50-60 percent. Almost everyone has had such an intuitive, meaningful dream experience in their life. The most important thing, however, is to be able to interpret these dreams correctly. If a person does not interpret the dream they saw, this situation can sometimes lead to problems. When a person focuses excessively on a subject, this is called creative thinking, and sudden inspiration comes as a result of this intense concentration. This inspiration sometimes arises when awake, and sometimes in dreams. Therefore, there may be a dimension of meaning in the universe that we do not yet fully understand. Dreams can also sometimes be considered one of the ways to connect with this dimension.” He concluded his words.
