## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We are striving for a university where young people and senior generations unite and work towards a common goal”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan began his speech by stating that they currently have 24 thousand students continuing their education. He said, “Over the past 10 years, we have graduated 34 thousand students. Today, we will gown our professors who have received academic promotions. Judges also wear gowns. These gowns have two features: they have no pockets and no buttons at the front. The absence of buttons symbolizes that they should not be buttoned up or bowed before anything other than truth and justice. The absence of pockets signifies that the work should not be done for personal gain. We are also presenting plaques to our professors who have completed 50 years in their profession. We are striving to be a university where young and senior generations work together towards a common goal.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We aim to train Nobel candidate students”**

Emphasizing that their vision as a university is to train Nobel candidate students, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated, “We always express this vision so that our students who come to our university and study can dream this dream. In doing so, we say that we cannot be universal without being local. To progress healthier in life, we need to achieve modernization while preserving our own culture.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We missed the industrial revolution due to the stagnation of progress in thought”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that one of the sultans of science was Fatih Sultan Mehmet and continued his words as follows:

“We always know him as the sultan of conquest. He brought Halil Kuşçu, a student of Uluğ Bey who built the observatory in Samarkand, to Istanbul and had an observatory built in Tophane. As someone who thought beyond his era, he also paved the way for innovations. There can be no scientific transformation without mental transformation, and no military transformation without scientific transformation. Fatih Sultan Mehmet realized a significant mental transformation. Fatih Sultan Mehmet was extremely open to innovations and had a vision to commission designs beyond his time. As a society, we know the conquest of Istanbul opened a new era. In fact, what changed the era was not the conquest but the invention of the cannon. The realization that castles could be destroyed with the invention of the cannon changed the feudal structure of the Middle Ages, leading to the emergence of the bourgeoisie. The feudal structure in Europe changed, a wealthy class emerged, and the social structure began to disintegrate. The world saw that castles were no longer a refuge for some powerful individuals. In other words, the era changed not with conquest, but with scientific development. However, in the Ottoman Empire, ulema who were directly opposed to science blamed the observatory in Tophane for the emerging plague epidemic. After the observatory was destroyed by cannons, the progress of thought in the Ottoman Empire also ceased. This stagnation in the progress of thought is the main reason why we missed the Industrial Revolution.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We have to question everything”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan reminded that as a result of the ulema convincing the sultan, the madrasa in Cağaloğlu High School, where natural sciences and philosophy, religious sciences, astronomy, and geography were taught together, was also closed. He said, “In this madrasa, both rational and transmitted sciences were taught. Later, Sultan Abdulhamid opened darul-funun twice. Darul Funun is known as the place for natural sciences. After existing for 200 years, they were also closed. As a result, two types of people emerged in the Ottoman Empire: one blindly defending religious sciences, and the other completely opposing them. The children raised by Abdulhamid overthrew that structure because they captured the spirit of the time. When we miss an era, we must risk falling backward. The moment we miss innovation, we become outdated. As a university, we have to question everything.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We need to use the power of science well”**

Stating that traditionalism is good but conventionalism is problematic, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Conventionalism holds people back. We need to create new traditions while preserving the old ones. In an era where technology is so prominent, sticking to the old era makes us an object of science. Others produce, we use. We merely become a market for developed countries. We must be market creators, not just a market. For example, we produce the most hazelnuts, but we cannot manage hazelnut policies; someone else does. Timbers in the world come from Africa, but France manages timber policy. The imperialist system has created power by using knowledge. The greatest power of our time is the power of science. This is called soft power. The better we do and the further we advance in science, the stronger we become.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Science should belong to society, not serve personal interests” **

Emphasizing that their primary mission as a university is to provide professional qualifications, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Beyond that, there are R&D policies. R&D is very important. We established the BrainPark incubation center. Companies in our incubation center have started producing some devices, especially brain stimulation devices. We established a laboratory to study transgenic cells. TÜBİTAK President Hasan Mandal visited our university to support student projects and invited us to Teknofest. Another mission of ours is to inform society. We are trying to do this. It is very valuable for our professors to make their work visible, present it to the scientific community, and turn it into books. Science should belong to society, not just serve personal interests. Transforming science into products is also very important. Industrialization and commercialization always happen thanks to science.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We succeeded in becoming the 3rd foundation university with the most patents”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the most important priority for universities should be to live and breathe projects, concluding his words as follows: “In everything we do, we should discuss how to project it, define its goal, and determine its logical framework. We should chart our course by looking at our strengths and weaknesses. We always receive appreciation from the workplaces of our students. This makes us happy. Having such feedback on our work constitutes our biggest brand power. We have also started to reap the fruits of our quality efforts. We continue to participate in the G20. In two weeks, we will attend the N20 meeting, which will take place within the scope of the G20 in Indonesia. We will have a presentation there. We have succeeded in entering the top 3 among foundation universities in terms of patent acquisition. The efforts of our incubation center stand out here.”

## **Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek narrated the Sultans of Medicine**

The first lecture of the new academic year was given by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek, Head of the Department of Medical Pathology at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, who has completed 50 years in his profession, under the title “Sultans of Medicine in the World and Among Turks from Yesterday to Today.” Providing examples from the works of many scientists worldwide, from Ancient Greece, Hipokrat to Galen, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek presented examples of the contributions of famous scientists from the Turkish world, including Ibn Sina, Biruni, and Akşemseddin, to the modern medical world.

## **Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek: “Children should bring education from abroad to our country”**

Stating that Turkish civilization has made many contributions to world medicine, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek advised students to work for our country and educate themselves. Noting that he and many scientists like him were trained in Turkey, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek said, “I believe that the thousands of years of genetic accumulation in medicine and other branches of science, reached by our ancestors, will not disappear. I am of the opinion that we will reach that knowledge faster than the children of any other nation. The marketing of our young minds to Europe and America should be prevented starting from secondary education. Today, Turkish children even work at NASA. Let them go, get an education, and bring the education they receive back to their country. Let science be produced in our country. Our children should be encouraged in this direction.” Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek advised, “Repeat the information given to you frequently and work hard. Prepare yourselves now to be a good physician and scientist.”

## **“Climate Ambassador” Melisa Sarıkaya delivered a speech**

At the ceremony, Melisa Sarıkaya, Üsküdar Üniversitesi's “Climate Ambassador Student,” also gave a speech. Melisa Sarıkaya, one of the “Climate Ambassador” students identified in 209 universities in our country at the request of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, addressed her fellow students and academics. Sarıkaya noted that being chosen as Üsküdar Üniversitesi's ‘climate ambassador student’ means both a great honor and a great responsibility for her. She stated, “As a ‘climate ambassador,’ it is very important for me to carry out joint studies with our valuable academics and fellow students, to identify the measures that need to be taken in the fight against the climate crisis, and to strive and contribute to the implementation of these measures. I will make an effort to fulfill my duties in the best possible way.”
