## Özet

[**Üsküdar Üniversitesi**](https://uskudar.edu.tr )** **[**Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences**](https://uskudar.edu.tr/itbf/)** Psychology and Sociology departments organized the 1st International Suicide Symposium, where the phenomenon of suicide was discussed from many aspects. Making the opening speech of the symposium, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founder Rector, Psychiatrist **[**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan**](https://www.nevzattarhan.com)**, stated that the factor leading individuals to suicide is the deprivation of social support and human isolation, adding, “This is now a global trauma, a global problem.” Pointing out that the phenomenon of suicide also has a cultural aspect, Tarhan noted that Japanese culture has a culture of honorable behavior, stating, “The meaning attributed to death in our culture also reduces suicide. This is a serious sociological situation.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the biggest reason for suicides in this period is the feeling of hopelessness and pessimism, and said, “When people encounter traumatic realities like Covid-19, they cannot deny anything. Because their lives have changed, we are facing a destructiveness we call destructive innovation. To transform this into innovation, we must certainly look at the acquisition dimension. The magic word here is hope. There is a hidden law of psychology in life. Doors open for those who do not fall into despair.” Scientists from universities in Italy and Kazakhstan also made presentations at the symposium.**

## **Dr. Lecturer Meltem Narter: “Contribution to scientific data production will be provided”**

Making the opening speech of the symposium held online under pandemic conditions, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Head of Psychology Department, Symposium Chair Dr. Lecturer Meltem Narter, stated that they decided to organize this symposium with the emphasis placed by founding rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan on the importance of studies related to suicide, especially during the pandemic process. Narter, emphasizing that they attach importance to discussing suicide, a very difficult topic for people, from all its aspects, noted that producing scientific data on this subject is important and that this symposium is very important in this regard.

## **Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan: “We are facing a deep global trauma under pandemic conditions”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector's Advisor, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan said, “First and foremost, we all feel the full effects of the pandemic to our core. For more than a year, we have been sustaining our lives in a semi-open, semi-closed state, away from our loved ones, our normal lives, and our standards. However, the issue of suicide can naturally create much more severe consequences for people with much more fragile psychologies and weaker resistance to life.”

Noting that suicide is not just an individual issue but also has political aspects, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan said, “Here, in today’s symposium, we will primarily try to examine the more human and pandemic-related dimensions of the issue.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Unhappiness scores have risen in people”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, in his opening speech, emphasized that as someone who works with patients, he has observed an increase in unhappiness scores in people, stating, “Not every unhappiness is depression. Unhappiness can be in everyone’s life, sometimes there are fluctuations, it decreases, it increases. Humans feel a bad situation, analyze that badness, learn things, learn to be happy. But suicide is a global trauma.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Crises are destructive innovations and parts of perfection”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating, “The most important feature of management and leadership is predictability,” continued his words as follows:

“One can manage today’s crisis, but it is very important to be able to predict what will happen one step, five steps, ten steps, and ten years later. For this, it is necessary to grasp some precursors. We are talking about humans being able to reason from these precursors, make probability calculations, and even create mathematical models to predict what might happen in the future. Mistakes, errors, and crises are actually destructive innovations and parts of perfection. In chaos theory, there is not instantaneous perfection, but total perfection. Humankind finds perfection in this way.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The biggest cause of suicides is loneliness”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan continued his words by saying that as universities, they deal with science: “The biggest characteristic of science is that we present information to both the universal flow and the scientific world, and facilitate the work of decision-makers. Regarding suicide, for example, data disclosed by Finland to the press during the Covid-19 period indicates a 15 percent increase in suicides. Interestingly, the Japanese were the most affected. Japanese culture is already a society where suicide is glorified. Because it is glorified as a culture, there is a significant increase of around 30 percent in suicide statistics. There was a 15 percent increase in the first wave, but then the Japanese government, within a very good policy framework, succeeded in reducing suicides with quick lockdowns and generous aid to the public. However, an unexpected situation occurred in the second and third waves. Suicides, previously seen in older age groups, increased among young individuals and women. The biggest reason for this situation was identified as the loneliness of individuals. Humans are relational beings. Following this, Japan established a Ministry of Loneliness on March 3rd.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Humans are relational beings”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that the factor leading a person to suicide is the deprivation of social support, stating, “When a person goes out, there is no one to greet, and no one to call and talk to. The human need for socialization is biologically and genetically coded into our minds. Humans are not genetically created to live alone. Humans are relational beings. If they don’t form relationships, they at least form relationships with cats or dogs. In a village in Japan, when the population decreased, they placed dolls around so people wouldn’t feel alone. Japan has become a society where loneliness has such an effect.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Suicidal ideation is a symptom of major depression”**

Tarhan stated that when the causes of suicide are investigated, it is always accepted as an illness, and said, “That's why I wanted our psychology and sociology departments to take ownership of this issue. When we look at it, we can say that 1 in 3 cases are not even clinical cases. That is, they have not been diagnosed with depression. A person comes and is diagnosed with clinical depression, major depression. Suicidal thoughts are one of the 8 main symptoms of major depression. Normally, the thought of death and suicide does not often come to the mind of a person whose daily life is going well. But when things that are going well go wrong, people usually begin to feel fear and anxiety at that moment because perceptions have changed. Fear follows anxiety, and when fear comes, anxiety about the future begins. When anxiety about the future begins, if the person cannot manage it, it eventually turns into depression.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “There is a period of mental incubation before suicides”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, pointing out that a period of searching and decision-making is experienced perhaps months or years before depression, said, “If the thought of death and suicide previously came to a person’s mind once a day, it starts to come 10 times a day. After a while, that thought turns into a desire. If this desire is not fulfilled, if a solution cannot be found, it turns into an intention. And in the fourth and final stage, it turns into an attempt. That is why sudden suicide crises are very rare. Most suicides are preceded by a period of mental incubation. It is during these periods that people need to be reached. At this point, sociology, social sciences, and basic psychology sciences need to collaboratively produce preventive mental health solutions. Because the World Health Organization globally foresaw this, it prepared a worldwide suicide prevention project and sent it to the parliaments of all countries. The suicide prevention project is also pending in our parliament. Japan first implemented the prevention project in 2006.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Intellectual crisis was first addressed in the science of psychology”**

Tarhan stated that it is always referred to as a clinical case, but existential suicides are the second reason, saying, “For this, philosophy is now becoming applied philosophy to answer people's existential problems, and there are third-wave psychotherapies, such as accepting death and living with it instead of fearing and escaping it. One of the steps within this involves therapy techniques within the concept of a mental sanctuary to control situations that a person cannot control or does not have the power to control. This is an existential intellectual crisis, referred to as ‘intellectual suicide.’ The science of psychology, which addressed this for the first time in history, is a very old science. Although the history of psychology and sociology is very old, their establishment as a scientific discipline, methodologically and systematically, dates back only 200 years, yet historically they are very ancient. We need to present data with scientific rigor in these two fields so that future generations can be protected in this regard.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “There is no suicide for a sacred purpose in Islamic teachings”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that another reason for suicide is human isolation, and that loneliness is only beneficial to humans if it is chosen loneliness, saying, “This is now a global trauma, a global problem. There are also suicides for a sacred purpose, politically conceived and put into action by suicide commandos. This exists especially in Middle Eastern culture. However, Islamic teaching has no such recommendation. We can say it is entirely Mesopotamian culture.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The meaning attributed to death in our culture reduces suicides”**

Tarhan reminded that in Japanese culture, there is a culture of honorable behavior related to suicide, and said, “The meaning attributed to death in our culture also reduces suicide. This is a serious sociological situation. We already see this in our depressed patients. When we ask, ‘Do you enjoy living?’ they say, ‘Whether I live or not doesn’t matter. But if I didn’t have the feeling of accountability to God, I would surely commit suicide.’ This is a situation that easily adds 10 points on the Hamilton Depression Scale. We are specifically researching this because it means the person can no longer manage their life, has fallen into hopelessness and pessimism. There is much to be done before reaching this point.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Hopelessness and pessimism are the biggest causes of suicide in this period”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, pointing out that the biggest reason for suicides in this period is the feeling of hopelessness and pessimism, said, “There is a branch of science in psychiatry called Thanatology. Thanatology is the science of death. Humans have life energy and the reality of death. When people encounter traumatic realities like Covid-19, they cannot deny anything. Because their lives have changed, we are facing a destructiveness we call destructive innovation. To transform this into innovation, we must certainly look at the acquisition dimension. The magic word here is hope. There is a hidden law of psychology in life. Doors open for those who do not fall into despair.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that humans are the only beings aware of death and stated that humans are constantly searching for meaning.

## **Prof. Dr. Tayfun Doğan: “Meaning and purpose are protective factors in suicide prevention”**

Following the opening speeches, in the first session of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Tayfun Doğan from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Psychology Department, in his presentation titled “Meaning and Purpose in Life as Protective Factors in Suicide Prevention,” pointed to the importance of creating meaning and purpose in life. Stating that suicide ranks 14th among causes of death in Turkey, Prof. Dr. Tayfun Doğan said, “Humans are beings who seek happiness and meaning. The search for meaning is an inseparable part of human existence and unique to humans.” Dr. Lecturer Zeynep Gümüş Demir from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Psychology Department made her presentation titled “Suicide in Elderly Individuals”; and Dr. Lecturer Esra Işık from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Psychology Department touched upon the relationship between traumatic events and suicide in her presentation titled “Trauma and Suicide.”

## **Suicide evaluated from philosophical and sociological perspectives**

In the second afternoon session of the symposium, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Philosophy Department Prof. Dr. Metin Bal, with his presentation titled “Philosophy and Suicide”; and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Head of Sociology Department Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, with his presentation titled “Sociological Analysis of Suicides in Eurasian Countries,” evaluated the phenomenon of suicide. Prof. Dr. Sinan Canan and Dr. Lecturer Meltem Narter from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Psychology Department also participated with their presentations titled “Pandemic Period and Suicide.” In the third and final session of the symposium, Prof. Maurizio Pompili, Head of the Psychiatry Department at the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, Sapienza University of Rome, participated with his presentation “Mental Pain The Phenomenology Of Suicide - The Phenomenology of Mental Pain Suicide.” The final presentation of the symposium was made by Matskevich Irina, Barabanova Elena, Stelmakh Svetlana, Aurenova Madina from Amangolov East Kazakhstan University, titled “Screening Tool For Diagnosing Suicide Risks in The Context of Well-Being.”
