**The first lesson of the new academic year was given by Dr. Osman Coşkun**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi, which started as our country's first thematic university in the fields of behavioral sciences and health, and leads many academic studies in various fields, especially medicine, health, science, and technology, officially opened its 2021-2022 Academic Year with a ceremony. The opening speech of the ceremony, held at the Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall in Üsküdar Üniversitesi Central Campus, was delivered by Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, the Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Üsküdar Üniversitesi.

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Covid taught us to re-evaluate our philosophy of life”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that during the Covid period, the crisis was overcome with minimal damage both nationwide and as a university, while also learning some lessons. He said, “The virus has become more controllable. We can now conduct classes using what we call the Fi-gital system, with 40 percent online and 60 percent in the classroom. Covid taught us many things. In fact, it taught us to re-evaluate our philosophy of life, showed us that some things would not be the same as before, and that we needed to establish new normals. In the meantime, we saw how important science is as a guide and a pathfinder. If there had not been sufficient developments in vaccines, we would have suffered many more losses globally. We need to know that awareness and understanding regarding the measures taken for vaccines are universal.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Criticality holds an important place in the advancement of science”**

Emphasizing that the principle of criticality is very important in the advancement of science, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Because we highly value it as a university, we introduced critical thinking as a course and made it mandatory after July 15. In the 1890s, Şehbenderzade Filibeli Ahmet Hilmi wrote in his book about criticism: ‘Criticism is the fundamental condition for progress and idea development. Without criticism, science turns into a mausoleum. For society to be happy and progress, religious and scientific principles must support and aid each other.’ He says. Humans need science, philosophy, and religion. We must maintain high levels of criticality and accountability. We frequently emphasize this as our university's vision.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Living stuck in the past is anachronism”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that while respecting tradition is good, getting stuck in traditionalism is, in a sense, anachronism, and continued his words as follows:

“Anachronism is being stuck a few hundred years in the past and living that day. An anachronistic life causes one to miss innovations and entrepreneurship. Being innovative and entrepreneurial should not be used as PR material; it needs to be internalized and believed. Without mental transformation, social and scientific transformation cannot occur. The West produces, we imitate. In recent years, there has been significant production in the defense industry through R&D, and we immediately reaped its rewards. Our defense industry showed success and attracted everyone's attention worldwide. Why? Because there was a strong focus on R&D. This is a strategy. R&D should not only be in the defense industry but in every field. For example, it should have been in vaccines too. We could have produced our own vaccine earlier. Achieving mental transformation in people is harder than changing machines. We can only overcome obstacles if we can change minds. But we still see too many anachronistic individuals who want to cling to the past, bring that day into the present, try to turn knowledge into a mausoleum, and are closed off to innovation.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “It is not possible for us to make progress without mental transformation”**

Noting that the university system is currently behind even the public, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The system is currently closed to innovation; there is only innovation in words. By forcing it, there can be a move towards innovation in some areas of R&D. If we need to make a self-criticism, we cannot say that we are very advanced in the higher education system. We are also a part of this education. We need to prick ourselves with the needle. It is not possible for us to make progress in universities without implementing mental transformation.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Artificial intelligence is being sought to be made the god of the earth”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan continued his words by saying, ‘The brain is the decision-making organ for the entire human body, health, behavior, and everything else’:

“The new frontier of science is the brain. We want to do projects related to deep learning. We established a technology transfer office. We are trying to progress by completing the deficiencies. At the Davos Summit in 2018, there was an assertion like ‘our brains can be hacked, the world is heading towards digital dictatorship, we are the last free generation’. During those times, we were prepared with the infrastructure regarding the human brain being a new area in the development of civilization. Artificial intelligence and social sciences have started to overlap significantly. Also in Davos, the claim ‘Artificial intelligence is the new god’ emerged, which is information discussed behind the scenes and newly revealed. Global capital has a desire to make artificial intelligence the god of the earth. They believe they can do this by dominating digital platforms.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Covid pushed the world towards forced digitalization”**

Stating that Covid-19 compelled the rest of the world, which resisted digitalization, to digitalize, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “With this forced digitalization, in a sense, the rest of the world became luckier by avoiding being used as an object. The younger generation is very successful in digitalization. The younger generation is native to digitalization, while our generation is an immigrant to it. Children at younger ages read and use the digital world beautifully and surprise their parents. This is not due to their intelligence but because it's normal for them. A child learns digitalization like a native language. It is very important for the young generation to be innovative. Being open to new experiences develops a person.”

**First lesson from Dr. Osman Coşkun: Professions and the Future of Education in Digital Transformation**

The first lesson of the new academic year was given by Dr. Osman Coşkun, Member of the T.C. Presidency's Science, Technology, and Innovation Policies Board. Addressing the students with a presentation titled “Professions and the Future of Education in Digital Transformation (Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0)”, Dr. Osman Coşkun touched upon topics such as future professions, in-demand skills in the business world, and changes in the dimensions of education.

**Dr. Osman Coşkun: “We need to make criticality a culture”**

As stated by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan in his opening speech, Dr. Osman Coşkun said that as a society, we have neglected our ability to be criticized and are in an attitude that will limit our own development. Stating that our country receives a 1% share of the world's income pie, Dr. Osman Coşkun said, “It has been this way for the last 300 years. This needs to change. The obstacle to this is what our teacher Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said. I don't like to be criticized, and neither do you. However, it should be the opposite. We need to make this a culture for 84 million people very quickly. Just as we are very happy when someone praises us, if we could be very happy when they criticize us, I would develop myself. So, the moment we perceive criticism as praise, will we change this genetically, will we change our DNA? We need to do this. For 300 years, our national income has been 1% of the world's income pie. This needs to change. For this, we need to be open to criticism.”

**Dr. Osman Coşkun: “Let's not miss Industry 5.0”**

Dr. Osman Coşkun stated that humanity reached today's civilization by embarking on a long journey, saying, “Those who discovered the steam engine succeed, they move forward. Those who don't discover it always fall behind. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan mentioned it. He said we missed Industry 1.0, Industry 2.0, Industry 3.0. In Industry 4.0, we got on the train at the last moment, but we are standing. Everyone else is seated, and we are standing. But at least let's not miss 5.0. Let's not miss 6.0. I believe that with our wonderful teachers, our students, and the youth of our country, we will catch up.”

**Dr. Osman Coşkun: “Information technologies will come to the forefront in the coming period”**

Noting that while industrial establishments were more prominent in the past, today service-oriented employment areas have come to the forefront, Dr. Osman Coşkun said, “Amazon has no stores. In the coming period, information technologies will come to the forefront. There are professions on the verge of disappearing. In the past, there were employees who sold door-to-door. Now there are applications that sell online.” Dr. Osman Coşkun also stated that there are many new professions in different areas as future professions, such as big data specialists, artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists, e-commerce and social media specialists.

**Dr. Osman Coşkun: “Those who only focus on the fruit do not produce technology”**

Dr. Osman Coşkun also offered advice to university students, saying, “Imagine a tree. Its roots and trunk are basic sciences and social sciences. Its branches are engineering, and its fruit is technology. What we are doing now is this: there is a technology somewhere. Our children solve this technology with reverse engineering. But this is not permanent. Therefore, we always become dependent on others. I would like to express that our smartest students should be educated in basic sciences, social sciences, philosophy, engineering, and medical sciences, and technology will emerge later. Those who only focus on the fruit do not produce technology; they only use technology.”

**Dr. Osman Coşkun: “Young people should be educated according to the thumbtack rule”**

Drawing attention to the skills demanded in the business world, Dr. Osman Coşkun said, “In the West, there is the thumbtack rule. They say, ‘Know something about everything, and everything about something.’ Our children will be good psychologists, but it is important for them to have as much knowledge as needed from other fields too. We have to educate our children this way. Because the business world now expects this from you.” Stating that the importance of online education was understood during the pandemic, Dr. Osman Coşkun pointed to the importance of innovation-oriented learning in Education 4.0, the future education model. Dr. Osman Coşkun said that traditional education should be enriched, and face-to-face and online education should be given in a blended format.
