## Özet

**Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Institute of Social Sciences Positive Psychology Dialogues event. Speaking on the topic of “Understanding Positive Psychology”, Tarhan said; “In Davos, three topics were identified as critical areas for the future of the world; one is climate change, the second is economic inequality, and the third is loneliness. As a solution to this, the West teaches positive psychology. Within positive psychology, there is the learning of human values. Let's teach values, but values are not learned through sermons and conferences, as is done in primary schools and kindergartens. Values are learned through value-based education.”**

## **“We are busy bringing the negative to zero” **

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drawing attention to the emergence of positive psychology from a need, stated; “Positive psychology emerged from a need. We are dealing with pathology, with the resolution of problems. In other words, we are busy bringing the negative to zero. We see that people who recover become sick again. Later, things that need to be done to prevent people from getting sick are not done sufficiently. If the patient's highest benefit, the society's highest benefit, is essential, then giving importance to people not getting sick, according to the society's highest benefit, is more important and a priority than treating a patient. Medicine, in fact, is divided into three pillars. One is curative medicine, which is both high-cost and laborious; the second is preventive medicine, which involves identifying risk groups in advance and preventing diseases; the main medicine is administrative protective medicine, which strives to prevent a person from falling ill. This duty has been given to medical professionals in two areas among medical professions. For example, it says child health and diseases specialist, mental health and diseases specialist, not mental diseases specialist. We have a job description to do things for people's health, as specialists. Just as pediatricians have a job description related to preventing children from getting sick, there is such a job description in terms of mental health. Among the books we wrote about family in the 2000s, the book ‘Psychology of Happiness’ was published in 2005. The book ‘Psychology of Emotions’ also similarly. In 1994, the emergence of the concept of emotional intelligence created a scientific basis for this, because the neuroscientific foundations of psychology emerged,” he said.

## **“You activate your own dynamics”**

Tarhan, stating that the negative spontaneously improves when positives are strengthened; “What is the equivalent of medicine in psychiatry? Without going into the person's pathology or their parents' conflicts, you simply reveal their character strengths, apply positive reinforcements, activate their psychological immune system, and enable them to overcome the illness themselves. In other words, you activate their own dynamics. Instead of dealing with negative pathology through positive reinforcement methods, when you strengthen the positives, the negative spontaneously improves. This is like wanting to fight darkness and saying 'darkness is bad, how will we deal with it?' instead of immediately lighting a lamp without dealing with the darkness at all. When a person's mental health begins to improve, psychological conflicts and problems spontaneously resolve. Therefore, the positive reinforcement method is not used in very advanced pathologies. The person has reached a point where it's impossible for them to focus on their positive aspects. In such situations, obsession has formed in the brain, and repetitive thoughts have made their brain like a highway. The brain automatically produces faulty thoughts; therapy cannot be applied to that. First, you will correct the infrastructure in the brain with biological treatment. You will correct the neuroplasticity in the brain, and then by approaching it therapeutically, you need to create the right network in place of the wrong one, form thought patterns, and prepare that person for therapy. Biologically correcting neuroplasticity or, in their case, drugs, treatments like magnetic stimulation therapies work more effectively after these,” he said.

## **“If we manage our minds well, we manage our brains well”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan; “The subject that science is currently working on the most is basic consciousness studies, what is consciousness? Why does a person born with an identity remain with the same identity until death? Why don't we change identities? It's as if we are given an IP at birth and also at death. IT specialists enter and change the IPs on a computer. This means there is something universal, like consciousness, beyond our innate free will. As Young said; ‘Our soul has a non-material part.’ There is such a thing right now. If we are to call this a quantum universe and consciousness, there is something. Therefore, if we correctly manage our commanding will and consciousness, if we manage our mind well, we manage our brain well. We will see our brain as a malfunctioning machine. When we teach it to work correctly, just like a car, if you teach it to work correctly, the car won't crash. If you teach the driver correctly, they won't have an accident. A car has an engine, a steering wheel, and a driver. The car's engine moves it; if the steering wheel is faulty or the driver is inexperienced, that car will not go, no matter how powerful the engine. If the control panel is faulty, even if the driver is skilled, the car still won't go. Here, the engine is our emotions. Our emotions, the control panel is reason, reasoning, and that is the steering wheel. And above that is the driver, which is consciousness. If we educate that consciousness, the correct program is loaded into the control panel, and if the engine works correctly, it reaches its destination. If we think of a human as such a metaphor, psychotherapy for a conscious person addresses the person's consciousness and corrects the damaged networks in the brain. Therefore, while doing all this, the fundamental principle of positive psychotherapy is the principle of the patient's highest benefit,” he stated.

## **“Both sides will be in agreement with each other”**

Tarhan, mentioning that a silent mutual agreement is made when the patient comes to the therapist; “When the patient comes to us, we make a silent agreement with them. In this silent agreement, we imply; 'If I am your listener, you will also be my listener,' without saying it directly, we make the agreement. As in, I will be your listener, and you will be mine. Both sides will be in agreement with each other. Here, while the therapist is an active listener, we actually need to make the client feel; 'What you have to say interests me.' If we cannot make the patient feel this; the moment they say, 'They're not interested in me, they keep looking at the computer. This therapist's mind is elsewhere,' it's over. Therapeutic trust will not form. Therefore, it is necessary to be patient-focused in a way that makes them feel 'what you are saying interests me.' The client here should understand; 'I am willing and intent on understanding you.' Not listening to this sabotages therapy. If something extraordinary comes up, it is necessary to ask for permission. Forget therapy, when you first meet a person, pay attention to 3 things: their privacy, their vulnerability, and their sacred things. Do not engage with these. What do we do? We immediately start talking like we're fellow townsmen, or asking why your leg is short, why one of your eyes is like that. No relationship should be established with a person's privacy and sacred things, especially never in therapy. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to these here. Here, the therapist is trying to say; 'I care about what's happening to you, your life and experiences are important to me.' If we give this impression, the client will listen to us. If we don't give importance, our facial expressions, gestures, and micro-expressions are important,” he stated.

## **“Positive psychotherapy also teaches how to be a good person”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that anyone interested in positive psychology must know Gardner’s character strengths. Tarhan; “Positive psychotherapy also teaches how to be a good person. Gardner, the man who discovered multiple intelligences, identified 6 virtues and 24 character strengths. In fact, those character strengths and virtues all describe being a good person. When we look at many character strengths, there is empathy, resilience, and delayed gratification within them. If you are interested in positive psychology, we definitely need to know Gardner's character strengths at least once. If we reinforce the 6 virtues and 24 character strengths, you can find that person's strong points based on this. After finding them, for example, one of the character strengths is wisdom; there are 6 virtues: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. It talks about these 6 virtues. What does capitalist education teach? It teaches profitability. The capitalist system calls humans economic beings. Now that has changed; the person who changed it received the Nobel Prize in the 2000s. Humans do not make decisions solely based on profit-loss analysis, they do not make decisions by maximizing utility; humans make decisions by maximizing love. They make decisions by maximizing love, emotions. They do not make decisions by maximizing emotions or reason when investing, spending money, or getting married. Therefore, a system emerged that brought human psychology into play, stating that reason is a scientific category, and emotions are also a scientific category,” he said.

## **“Values are learned through value-based education” **

Tarhan, mentioning that the learning of human values is present within positive psychology; “In this era, the greatest wealth is wisdom. The 21st Century will be the century of wisdom. The 20th Century was the age of information; the 21st Century must be the century of wisdom. I said; ‘Social media has become widespread, we live in the digital age. Where is humanity going, what will happen?' He gave a magnificent answer. Gardner said; ‘Life will become easier, but I cannot imagine humanity continuing in the same positive direction.’ We have a chance of losing humanity because virtues and values are not being taught in humanity right now. The capitalist system, capitalist ethics, has become global ethics; currently, one American consumes as much as five people worldwide. They used to liken Americans to dialysis patients. It needs oil. It stirs up the world just for that oil. Two billion people in Africa cannot access clean water, and Americans live in extravagance. Therefore, there is tremendous inequality in this world. Even in 2018 in Davos, three topics were identified as critical areas for the future of the world; One is climate change, the second is economic inequality, and the third is loneliness. It's truly like that with loneliness. As a solution to this, the West teaches positive psychology. Within positive psychology, there is the learning of human values. Let's teach values, but values are not learned through sermons and conferences, as is done in primary schools and kindergartens. Values are learned through value-based education,” he stated.
