## Özet

**Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest at the 'Digital Violence from a Woman's Perspective and Family' program organized by the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DİTİB) in Cologne, Germany. In the program, which saw participation from many regions of Germany, Tarhan made striking remarks under the title 'The Effects of Digitalization on Mental and Physical Health.' Tarhan addressed both the opportunities and threats of digitalization, emphasizing the negative impacts of digital addiction, cyberbullying, and domestic violence. Highlighting the importance of developing social and emotional skills in children and young people, Tarhan recommended that digital tools be used appropriately and in a controlled manner. **

## **"Digitalization is now a part of life"**

In the meeting moderated by DİTİB Member Merve Mert, and accompanied by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to both the threat and opportunity dimensions of digitalization; "Digitalization is a reality of this age. Just as the invention of the printing press brought about a great change in human history, and just as the steam engine initiated a new era, artificial intelligence and digitalization will lead to a similar transformation. At the university, we discussed this and said, 'Let's ban banning artificial intelligence.' Because it's not possible to resist it; digitalization is now a part of life. Digitalization can be both a threat and an opportunity. Whether a threat or an opportunity, there is always an aspect of trial. This dimension of trial should never be forgotten. I somewhat liken digitalization to this: Jesus Christ emerged from Palestine but globalized in Rome. How did this happen? It became the largest religion after 200-300 years. The reason for this was the strong aspect of the Roman Empire: all social, economic, and military activity was carried out via stone roads. The saying 'All roads lead to Rome' comes from this. Today's stone roads are the internet. Just as Jesus and his followers globalized Christianity by using these roads back then, today, we can use digitalization to convey the truth, the good, the beautiful, and the right to people, by keeping our intentions in the right direction. It is also possible to convey Quranic morality to people through these channels. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the trial dimension of digitalization within this framework," he began his words.

## **"The 'Nordic Paradox' has also been reflected in our culture"**

Emphasizing the rising rate of out-of-wedlock births, Tarhan said; "In the USA and especially in Northern European countries, like Germany, the rate of out-of-wedlock births is around 40 percent. In Turkey, this rate is 3.9 percent. This isn't about children left at mosque doors; what's meant here is out-of-wedlock birth. In Germany, it's around 43-44 percent, in Sweden and Norway 56 percent, in France 59 percent, in England over 40 percent, and in Iceland 69 percent. This is because there are anti-marriage movements. These movements, which ask 'Why is marriage necessary?', encourage out-of-wedlock births. Parallel to this, violence is also increasing. Liberation movements concerning violence against women, global cultural movements supporting anti-family sentiments… Yet, despite all this freedom, violence has increased even in countries like Denmark. In fact, the rates are close to Turkey's. I had researched this while writing the book 'Women's Psychology' in 2003. At that time, violence rates in Turkey were much lower. While there was almost one case of violence every day in France, 2-3 incidents per month were observed in Turkey. Statistics from 2004-2005 also showed this. Today, almost one or two women are killed every day in Turkey. Approximately 30-33 women lose their lives monthly due to domestic violence. We have currently surpassed Europe. The femicide rate there is around 25-30 percent. This 'Nordic Paradox' has also been reflected in our culture," he stated.

## **"Violence reflected from the digital environment has a negative impact"**

Stating that evil has become normalized with digitalization, Tarhan said; "Digitalization, unfortunately, facilitates violence. For example, we transfer money from one place to another in a virtual environment. Is this virtual or real? It's as real as it gets. Money genuinely leaves an account and goes to another. Similarly, digital violence is real. Just as the transfer of money is a digital reality, violence reflected into the family from the digital environment has an equally negative impact. It ingrains itself in our brains, creating an effect that normalizes violence. People constantly exposed to violence become desensitized. By constantly seeing negativity, they get used to the negative, starting to accept evil as normal. Evil becomes commonplace. Unfortunately, particularly the television series in Turkey also serve this purpose. They normalize negative events within the family."

## **"Most of us do this..."**

Stating that digital addiction negatively affects families, Tarhan said; "If a person immediately checks messages as soon as they wake up in the morning, this is the beginning of digital addiction. Most of us do this... This is called addiction, or captivity. It's such an addiction that you've become enslaved. Loss of control begins. The person uses it longer than planned, manages their time entirely according to it, and loses control. This is true for digital addiction, and the same mechanism works for gambling addiction. Gambling addiction has become very widespread in Turkey currently. Especially illegal betting and games linked to foreign countries... Opening a casino is forbidden, but gambling on mobile phones has unfortunately become normalized. We encounter many victims of this. This is also a type of digital addiction. It severely devastates families, causing very major family crises. Because digitalization is not an abstract thing; it creates a very concrete impact. It disrupts the reward system in our brains, just like other addictions."

## **"Being traditional is good; being traditionalist is problematic"**

Stating that children should be treated according to the era they live in, Tarhan said; "There's a saying by Hazrat Ali, 'Raise your children not according to the era you live in, but according to the era they will live in.' This is a wonderfully visionary perspective, but we try to raise our children according to the era we live in. Yet, the era they will live in is completely different. We impose habits of the old era, not even today's era. Being traditional is good; beautiful values should be passed on to children, but being traditionalist is problematic. Because this increases generation conflict. This is called anachronistic, an approach with a distorted chronology. For example, saying, 'I dressed like this when I was a child, so you should dress like this too' is not right. The form is not important, the essence is important. Morality, character are important. Main issues are important; one shouldn't get too caught up in details. Also, what increases generation conflict the most is this: good intentions are not enough. You might have good intentions, but the methodology you use is very important. Alongside a good intention, a good method and the right effort are needed," he stated.

## **"We need to work on emotional and social skills for the 4-6 age range"**

Emphasizing that social and emotional skills should be taught to children, Tarhan said; "Children between the ages of 0-3 should absolutely not be given screens. After the age of 3, screens can only be used under parental supervision, for play purposes, and in a controlled manner. For example, if a child encounters something violent, they must be guided. Because the ability for abstract thinking in children is just beginning to develop until the age of 6-7. In some intelligent children, this ability can even start at age 4. This therefore, between the ages of 4-6, children need to be taught how to sit, stand, share, help each other, and support one another. In Far Eastern countries, it's even said, 'Teach them that the fish in the aquarium can die.' Because children start to understand the realities of life at these ages. During this period, children are not taught things like memorizing multiplication tables, learning mathematics, or being given official ideologies; instead, purely social and emotional skills are taught. China and Japan are currently implementing this model. We also need to do this. We particularly need to work on emotional and social skills with children in the 4-6 age range. Because the emotional and social architecture in our brains forms at these ages. Just like algorithms that perform mathematical modeling, these skills are established in the brain as concrete records," he stated.

## **"Digital tools should be used in moderation and for their intended purpose"**

Emphasizing that digitalization hinders social interaction, Tarhan said; "Digitalization also gives rise to a condition called 'learned autism.' When you give a child a mobile phone or tablet at an early age, the child becomes like a child with learned autism. They can be very good, even superior, in some areas, but they cannot sit down and play with someone. They cannot communicate with their friends. Everyone laughs in class, but they don't understand and don't laugh. Because they become unsocialized. Therefore, social contact is very important. Digitalization prevents this. If digital tools are used appropriately, in moderation, and for their intended purpose, they make our lives easier. If we use them outside their purpose or incorrectly, they harm us. In medicine, there is a snake symbol. The reason the snake is the symbol of medicine is this: if snake venom is in the correct dose, it's medicine; if it's more than the dose, it kills. Digitalization is exactly the same. If it's in moderation, it makes our lives easier, but if we overuse it, it harms us like snake venom."

## **"One of the biggest causes of attention deficit is digitalization"**

Stating that attention should be paid to screen usage at home, Tarhan said; "One of the biggest causes of attention deficit in youth and children is digitalization. They consume content very quickly. They even speed up a one-minute video and watch it at 1.5x speed. This much speed weakens the ability to focus. However, for the frontal, or anterior, region of the human brain related to focus to develop, some mental discipline is required; it needs to be challenged. The brain must be challenged to produce resilience, perseverance, and steadfastness. When you challenge the brain, a network related to that topic develops in the brain. Just like young people doing body-building... Just as their muscles strengthen when they work out, cognitive networks related to attention and memory in the brain also strengthen with exposure and effort. Emotional and social networks are the same way. Without challenge, children quickly get bored. Attention in children and young people disperses in 3 minutes. They just look, but their minds are elsewhere. For this reason, a book titled 'Attention Killer' was even written in France about fast shares on social media. Therefore, it is necessary to remove screens as much as possible for children during school periods. If we cannot remove them entirely, at least with a media protection approach, phones should be given only for communication purposes, so they can make calls when needed. There should not be prolonged screen usage. If parents pay attention to this issue at home, the child behaves accordingly," he stated.

## **"Cyberbullying and peer bullying are seriously on the rise"**

Stating that children should be educated about peer bullying, Tarhan said; "Cyberbullying and peer bullying are seriously on the rise. For example, while peer bullying was around 10-15 percent in European Union and OECD countries, this rate was 33 percent in Turkey and has risen to as high as 40 percent in some studies. For this reason, the Ministry of National Education launched a campaign called 'Peer Courtesy'. So why do peers bully each other? There is already somewhat of such a tendency during adolescence; impulses are intense, but this situation has increased in recent years, and with the impact of digitalization, cyberbullying has emerged. Currently, many developed countries are implementing Anti-Bullying programs against cyberbullying, conducting training and awareness studies. In Turkey, the Ministry of National Education also runs a continuous program against peer bullying, and efforts to raise children's awareness on this issue are ongoing," he stated.

## **"Problems grow in societies where fear prevails"**

Stating that there is peace in a rule-based environment, Tarhan said; "The increasing animosity among people is the most important issue regarding social tension. People don't love each other, but love alone is not enough. Problems grow in societies where love weakens and fear prevails. This is where the difference between societies governed by fear and societies governed by love emerges. In a company, family, or society governed by love, people act more healthily in relationships. If there is a sense of trust, such as 'No one but the doorman will knock on our door,' or if one feels 'I am sure nothing out of the ordinary will happen if I end up at the police station, and nothing illegal will happen if I end up in court,' then the person feels safe and acts more comfortably. This is an indicator of a rule-based environment. Even if there isn't much love, if there is a rule-based environment and order, there is peace. If there is no order, if it's not a rule-based environment, and if a company or society operates in a structure where the strong oppress the weak, there will be no peace," he concluded his words.
