## Özet

**Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who pointed out that as the material welfare level in societies rises, the wisdom that makes a person ‘human’ declines, whereas wisdom is only possible through self-education, evaluated the pleasure-oriented living culture. Tarhan said, “Orientation towards pleasure is something that motivates us. But to turn this into a benefit for our lives, one must certainly use their intellect. True freedom is not doing everything you like, but being able to do what you want despite our own desires and impulses. Because within every person, there are detractors, misleading elements, seductive malicious parts. If a person educates these malicious parts, if you make those wild emotions within you accept ‘No, I’m the boss,’ then those emotions will take you where you want to go.”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that we live in an age where wisdom is globally underestimated and pleasure is glorified, explained that they developed “pleasure harm perception” and “consequence awareness” scales for individuals who cannot manage pleasure. Tarhan said, “We are trying to show these people this: If you continue to chase pleasure, what likely awaits you? What is the natural consequence of your actions? People don't understand their own perception of harm; we work on harm perception with them. That is, we explain with evidence that if you continue to drink, your liver will be like this, your brain is aging, your brain cells are dying, you will have early dementia, it will turn into Alzheimer's. Then, a perception of harm forms in the person.”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, emphasizing that a person who cannot educate themselves cannot be a leader to anyone else, explained the definition of “neuro-leadership” as follows: “First, we will be leaders of ourselves. Being able to manage our own desires and impulses, dopamine, serotonin, and pleasure hormones in the brain is leadership. We all have a wild horse within us that wants to live as it pleases, to go in any direction it wants. If you make those wild emotions within you accept ‘No, I’m the boss,’ then those emotions will take you where you want to go. First, we will be leaders of ourselves. This is called neuro-leadership.”

## **“It is necessary to set limits for both pleasure and pain”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, pointing out that it is in human biological nature to escape pain and move towards pleasure, said, “This is related to the reward-punishment system in the human brain. Humans try to avoid issues that have pain or fear at their end. They make choice decisions within a reward-punishment system. They try to move towards what is rewarding. And the biological rhythm works this way. However, not everything that gives pleasure is beneficial to them. They need to adjust the dose. For example, you love baklava, but it is harmful if you eat too much. To overcome that boundlessness and infiniteness related to pleasure, a person must definitely be able to set limits for themselves. They need to set limits for both pleasure and pain. If they can do this, they can manage themselves.”

## **“Delaying gratification is a skill”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that pleasure is a source of motivation for life and said that students are able to endure the effort of sitting down to study when they could be watching TV, playing computer games, or going out and about, thanks to the “skill of being able to delay pleasure.” Tarhan said, “The ability to delay pleasure exists only in humans. Other living beings do not have the ability to delay pleasure. We call it gratification deferment. Delaying gratification is a skill and not innate. You defer, you delay the reward. That's why you can endure some things. Here, the whole job is to manage the reward-punishment system in the brain, and managing this means managing oneself. For example, for religious people, the expectation of heaven after death is also a reward; as a long-term benefit, it also serves the reward in their brain.”

## **“Pleasure is like nuclear energy”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the biggest reason for the widespread increase in substance addiction is people's inability to manage their pleasures, and he said: “In therapies, we teach people pleasure management and the skill of delaying gratification. We provide them with resilience training. People who escape difficulty, opt for ease, and are lacking resilience have multiplied. Pleasure is like nuclear energy. Pleasure leads people to their goals, motivates them. However, if you exceed its dose or use it incorrectly, it will explode a person, it will harm them. The most important thing is to be able to discipline our own desires and impulses.”

## **“The world has turned into a digital prison”**

Tarhan stated that with the increase in social media usage, a society of display emerged where everyone can watch and observe each other, and said, “Our world of meaning has changed. Personal boundaries no longer exist. Postmodern identities began to be constructed. Before, there was an imperialism formed through pressure and intimidation. Now there is voluntary imperialism. We are spreading this voluntarily. Before, we could be ourselves. But now we are not ourselves; we have become an object. The world has currently turned into a digital prison where everyone can observe everyone else. Our freedom has been severely restricted. We think we are free, but there is a false freedom. Because we have transformed into a society of display, people's energy is wasted in a life constantly focused on pleasure and getting likes, asking ‘who is more ostentatious, how is someone, what have they worn, with whom, how are they behaving, what is someone doing?’”

## **“We have become a society of comparison”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that as a result of observing and comparing each other, people can very easily become depressed. “A system that makes most people unhappy is not a correct system. Currently, the capitalist system encourages a consumer society. We have become an image society. Images have replaced truths. This has become a tool for consumption. The person who best presents themselves, who best describes themselves, becomes the most valuable. People want to be ‘desired’. This feeling exists within humans, but people use that feeling incorrectly. They satisfy their own ego. Individual benefit has come to the forefront. Egocentrism has been glorified. Furthermore, people are caught in an allure as if everything is worldly life. Within this allure, they don't think long-term; they say ‘live the moment.’ Living the moment has been sanctified. Its equivalent in psychology is ‘live in the now.’ It is something said to not scatter the past and future with ‘if only’ and ‘I wonder,’ but to do justice to today. There is an approach like ‘live the moment, don't think about the future at all, break the chains, you only live once.’ In that, a person becomes extremely egocentric, trapped in their pleasures. Currently, postmodernism is revealing a type of person trapped in the feeling of ostentation.”

## **“Physical discipline replaced spiritual discipline”**

Tarhan, pointing out that images, ostentation, and praise have replaced fundamental truths in society, “It changed human needs in human relationships. Basic needs were replaced by feelings like being appreciated, praised, and desired. Instead of developing oneself, disciplining oneself, and educating one's desires and impulses, people turned to educating their bodies. Physical discipline replaced spiritual discipline. In such situations, with the effort to ‘have a perfect body,’ consumption patterns that constantly benefit the cosmetic industry emerge. The goal of consumption for us has become image, identity, status, prestige.”

## **“Narcissism increased to epidemic levels”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that as a result of changing consumption behavior and society transforming into a society of display, people who consider themselves superior and have no empathy for others have emerged. He said, “People who worship themselves have emerged. They sanctify themselves. This is called narcissism: admiring oneself, seeing oneself as an earthly god, and not tolerating criticism. Not caring about people who suffer or the needs of others. Such types of people have multiplied; in fact, a book titled ‘The Narcissism Epidemic’ was published in the USA. The biggest reason for this is that people shop for image instead of their basic, real needs. Shopping to show that one is in a separate status, has a special privilege, changed consumption behavior.” Tarhan added, “If half of a society is happy and the other half is unhappy, there cannot be peace there. A minimum level of happiness must be provided for everyone, but the current postmodernist, consumption-oriented system encourages people to act according to their desires, not their real needs. When shopping, a person needs to ask themselves, ‘I want this, but do I need it?’ distinguishing between wants and needs.”
