## Özet

[**Uskudar University**](https://uskudar.edu.tr/)** Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made striking statements at the award ceremony of the essay competition titled “Goodness Starts in 'Me'!” organized by Mavera Education and Health Foundation. Stating that everyone has a malevolent part trying to take control within them, Tarhan said, “There is a malevolent part within all of us. In religious terminology, its name is ‘nafs’ (self/ego). If we cannot reform this part, it will take over us, like a wild horse doing as it pleases, and manage us according to its own desires. If we make the nafs accept our authority, then it becomes a horse that takes us to our life's goal. It is very important that we convince ourselves to do good, because the human nafs does not want to do good. Freedom means being able to accept doing good without expecting anything in return, and being able to tame the wild horse within us.”**

## **“In This Era, Goodness and the Good Must Be Rewarded to Spread”**

He announced the results of the essay competition titled “Goodness Starts in 'Me'!” organized by Mavera Education and Health Foundation. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who attended the award ceremony, pointed out that the “Goodness Starts in Me!” competition is a project with deep meanings in the age of capitalist consumption. Tarhan said: “As its name suggests, this project is a topic that holds deep meanings and connotations. The Mavera Foundation is a very valuable foundation where individuals who want to realize Mehmet Akif Ersoy's dream of 'Asım's generation' come together; motivating young people, setting goals, and working on projects together to achieve this. Investment in the future is being made here. There is a Chinese proverb: ‘If you want prosperity for a year, sow wheat. If you want prosperity for ten years, plant trees. If you want prosperity for a hundred years, cultivate people.’ To achieve long-term ideals, it is necessary to cultivate people. Our ancestors have a beautiful saying: ‘Rewarding people motivates them.’ Two things motivate people: one is reward, the other is punishment. Motivating people with punishment is not the method of this era. Today, liberty is globally sacred, and along with liberty, there is a fast-paced life. In such a period, reward should be the rule, and punishment the exception. In our age, where an ego-centric and opportunistic perspective prevails, good deeds must be rewarded to pave the way for good people and goodness. One of the common features in all holy texts is doing good. It is necessary to do good randomly, silently, and without expecting anything in return.”

## **“The Human Type Cultivated by Global Capital Can Bring About the End of the World”**

Stating that contrary to what should be, the capitalist system cultivates an ego-centric, exploitative human type, Tarhan expressed that goodness will appear even at the most unexpected times. Tarhan said: “Popular culture and the capitalist system cultivate an ego-centric and opportunistic human type. Modern man has been led to believe that if he wants to be successful and on the winning side, he needs to be rich, powerful, and famous. He is also aware that to achieve these, he needs to be ruthless. This is such a vortex that it could bring about the end of all humanity. When examining the reasons for the collapse of great civilizations, it is seen that waste, oppression, and corruption reached extreme levels. As such negative traits increase, human values shift. In our age, too, values have shifted. The results of sociological changes emerge over time, not immediately. For this reason, young people should not see this as short-term, corrupt rewards of the capitalist system. These are spiritual transactions. This is also an investment for the afterlife. After all, no one is permanent in this world. Therefore, as Tolstoy also said, it is essential for us to seek a meaning that death cannot change.”

## **“We Must Tame the Wild Horse Within Us”**

Tarhan stated that with the “Goodness Starts in 'Me'!” project, he aimed to convey that individuals must initiate goodness themselves, emphasizing that one must convince oneself to do good. Tarhan said: “The project ‘Goodness Starts in 'Me'!’ reminded me of a hadith. When the Messenger of Allah returned from Badr, he said, “The minor jihad has ended, the major jihad has begun.” The companions asked, “What is the major jihad, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “The major jihad is the struggle against the nafs (self/ego).” So, in fact, there is a malevolent part within all of us. In psychiatry, we call it the malevolent part, but in religious terminology, its name is nafs. If we cannot reform this part, if we cannot discipline it, it will take over us, like a wild horse refusing to listen and doing as it pleases, and manage us according to its own desires. If we make the nafs accept our authority, then it becomes a horse that takes us to our life's goal. This is a time when the nafs is tremendously indulged. Never in human history have the nafs been so pampered. In this era, it is very important for a person to do good and to start with themselves to change the world. When one says ‘goodness starts with me,’ one should approach the subject with the understanding that 'I must first teach this to myself.' It is very important that we convince ourselves to do good, because the human nafs does not want to do good. True freedom is a person's ability to control themselves, their desires, and impulses. One must be able to accept doing good without expecting anything in return, and to tame the wild horse within us. True freedom is to be free from one's desires and impulses.”

## **“Trust is Like a Currency, Hard to Earn” **

Stating that the capital given at the start of life must be well utilized, Tarhan conveyed that the most important value is trust. Tarhan said: “When starting life, divine will has given us three important forms of capital. The first is labor, meaning to achieve through working with effort. The second is the capital of life (lifespan). The third is social capital, being able to build a network. Just as you plan and spend your money, these three forms of capital are also very valuable, like currency. Another important currency is the feeling of trust. Trust builds over years but can also be lost in an instant. But the word of a businessman who has trust and inspires trust is a promissory note. This is called trust capital. If our goal is to be a person who inspires trust; we will be open, transparent, honest, will not lie, and will not be opportunistic. Being a good person is achieved with these feelings.”

## **“The National Education System Cultivates an Opportunistic Human Model Aligned with Capitalist Values”**

Stating that our National Education system cultivates citizens aligned not with national but global values, Tarhan conveyed that if an investment is to be made in the future, a transition to a national education model should be made as soon as possible. Tarhan said: “Our National Education system is unfortunately not national. I describe it not as a national education system, but as a global education system. Because our education system has no national aspect. Currently, it is cultivating a truly global citizen. We have an education system that fosters a capitalist human type, one who only thinks of their own interests. With the human type raised within this education system, we cannot catch up with the future. This is like an unstoppable flood sweeping away everything in its path. We will try to save what we can. Nowadays, as family ties weaken, these values cannot be learned within the family. Social media causes the capitalist human model to spread more and more every day. Our responsibility, then, is to work harder.”

The award ceremony concluded after the presentation of gifts to the winning students and a group photo session.

Additionally, at the award ceremony, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan presented his book **"Being a Conscious Young Person" **to all students who placed in the essay competition titled **“Goodness Starts in 'Me'!”**
