The project named “ **'We Will Come' in the Crab Individual Rehabilitation Model**” will start in Üsküdar, the pilot district, in its first phase. 400 students aged 6-12 from 5 pilot schools, and their parents, teachers, school staff, neighborhood headmen, and religious officials will receive sexual abuse awareness and prevention training. The protocol signing ceremony for the project, accepted by the Ministry of Interior, took place with the participation of **TOGEMDER Executive Board Chair Belma Satır, TOGEMDER Board Chair Füsun Türken Uysal, Provincial Director of National Education Levent Yazıcı, and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan**. Tarhan stated that they would implement this project to protect those with the potential to be victims. Emphasizing that the secret of child neglect and abuse within the family is actually a secret known by everyone but not spoken about, **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “We are trying to heal a wound. And the most ideal method while healing a wound is not to open another one.” ** ## İçerik ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2021/12/24/800/toplu-imza-3.jpg) Child abuse and neglect are among the most significant social problems affecting millions of children and their families worldwide. Research shows that abuse incidents occurring within the family in Turkey are more frequent than those occurring outside the family. The average age for intra-familial abuse ranges from 5 to 7, while for extra-familial abuse, it varies between 7 and 10 years. **80 percent of abusers are acquaintances** When the age distribution of children exposed to sexual abuse is examined; it is seen that “30% are in the 2-5 age group, 40% in the 6-10 age group, and 30% in the 11-17 age group. This means that 70% of the cases consist of younger age groups. It is noteworthy that 96% of abusers are male, and 80% are someone known to the child.” **Project to raise awareness among families** To provide children with basic psychosocial skills and to raise awareness among adults around the child and the family regarding child neglect and abuse, the “We Will Come in the Crab Individual Rehabilitation Model” project will be implemented in cooperation with TOGEMDER (Social Development Center Education and Social Solidarity Association) and Üsküdar Üniversitesi. The project, accepted by the T.R. Ministry of Interior, will start in Üsküdar, the pilot district, after the protocol signing ceremony. ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2021/12/24/800/toplu-1_1.jpg) **Project will last 9 months** The target audience of the “We Will Come in the Crab Individual Rehabilitation Model” project, which will last 9 months, consists of 400 students aged 6-12 from 5 pilot schools in Üsküdar, the parents of these students, school administrators, teachers, school staff, neighborhood headmen where the schools are located, religious officials, and non-governmental organizations in the selected districts. Sexual abuse awareness and prevention training will be provided within the scope of the project. **Protocol signing ceremony to launch the project took place** To launch the project, a protocol signing ceremony took place at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate Hall with the participation of TOGEMDER Executive Board Chair, Istanbul Deputy Belma Satır, TOGEMDER Board Chair Füsun Türken Uysal, Provincial Director of National Education Levent Yazıcı, and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan. Information regarding the project's scope was provided by Prof. Dr. Gökben Hızlı Sayar, Head of Psychiatry Department and Director of SOBE at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine. ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2021/12/24/800/prof-dr-nevzat-tarhan.jpg) **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The project is about protecting vulnerable children”** Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of writing a project, placing it within a logical framework, and being able to conduct analyses that can interpret the data within it, said, “A project that we believe will be very beneficial emerged in a short time. Our Ministry of Interior and Ministry of National Education support the project. We can say that the project we are about to implement is about defending vulnerable children who need protection.” **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Child abuse is a secret known by everyone”** Emphasizing that the secret of child neglect and abuse within the family is actually a secret known by everyone, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “There are a great many cases we see. But it is not talked about, it is silenced. We are trying to heal a wound. And the most ideal method while healing a wound is not to open another one. In many families, there is a hidden wound that everyone actually knows and sees. We thought about how to heal this wound without opening other wounds. The classical approach of 'social services should file a report after the incident, it should be handed over to the law, and what is necessary should be done' further magnifies the wound, makes it more complicated, and can lead to major crises.” **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We will try to instill the ability to say 'no'”** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that within the scope of the project, they would work on 'no' saying skills by raising awareness when the incident is still small and by informing parents and society, and continued his words as follows: “At the same time, we will teach safe behavior to mothers, fathers, close relatives, and visitors to the home. Thus, the incident will be prevented before it escalates. Regarding children under protection, the Crab Project was written in 2014 but had not been implemented. We have completed the writing part of that project and published it as a university publication. All modules are fully ready. There are 25 modules, such as parent education, trainer education, victim education, and perpetrator education. We will start working in the pilot district, ready for implementation. We hope for positive outcomes and then to spread the project nationwide. For this, our ability to reach families is very important. Our Deputy Belma Satır enabled us to make rapid progress on many issues, and we believe we can continue the project.” **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Unresolved childhood traumas cause problems in the future”** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that they have scales related to childhood traumas, said, “These scales can show that unresolved traumas a person experienced in childhood cause many social problems in later life. Behind intelligent people exhibiting unexpected behaviors lie some mental traps. And behind these mental traps are unhealed traumas from childhood, and unovercome grief. We can say that working on this issue will be an investment for the future. A Chinese proverb says, 'If you want prosperity for a year, plant wheat; if you want prosperity for ten years, plant trees; if you want prosperity for 50-100 years, cultivate people.' The fruits of cultivating people are reaped late, the results are quiet, but the future is secured. The future of a society where conscious people are raised is also secured.” **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Children face abandonment without distance”** Emphasizing that abandonment without distance is also an important issue they will address concerning children, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan concluded his words as follows: “The mother is at home, the father is at work, but the child is neglected. When we investigate, we encounter 'abandonment without distance.' The mother and child are in the same environment at home, but the mother has given the child a tablet, is in front of a computer or television, not playing or talking with them. Here, there is emotional neglect. In such a situation, many other skills, in addition to mental and language skills, do not develop in the child. The child grows up like a disabled individual. There is complete indifference. The mother sees childcare as feeding and giving drinks, and the father sees it as working and bringing bread home. Spending time with the child, playing with them, sharing, explaining life and its difficulties are among the topics we will cover in this project. Parents who are aware of these issues will raise their children better. Information that will enable them to say, 'I treat my spouse better,' will be explained in the project. We will implement this project to protect those with the potential to be victims. As a university, we operate entirely on a voluntary basis. Our professors and doctoral students participated in the project voluntarily. If we can continue in a more developed way based on the results we get from the pilot study, we will have fulfilled our responsibility to future generations.” ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2021/12/24/800/ist-il-milli-egitim-muduru-levent-yazici-1.jpg) **Levent Yazıcı: “I sincerely believe we will achieve very good results”** Istanbul Provincial Director of National Education Levent Yazıcı stated that they believe very good results will be achieved at the end of the project, saying, “Our presence where children are, and our working together for the child's future, is very meaningful.” Levent Yazıcı said the following: “In this framework, signing this cooperation protocol as an institution is very important for us, especially with an association like TOGEMDER, which supports both education and social life, and with Üsküdar Üniversitesi, which generally conducts very effective and competent studies related to human and community mental health, particularly concerning children, their education, psychology, and social development. In this process, starting with the Üsküdar example, especially after the initial applications, we will competently manage this process together with our guidance research centers and all our stakeholders with whom we work in the field of special education and guidance in Istanbul, by evaluating the results together. The neglect and abuse of our children is a subject that primarily requires close contact from teachers in society and for which our schools and institutions, especially guidance services, have a high level of responsibility in its identification. Therefore, increasing our knowledge in this field and evaluating new field studies on this topic with the accumulated experience of both civil society and universities will be very instructive for us. I thank all institutions that contributed. Uysal said, “As is known, a conscious society means a strong future. Within the scope of this project, we chose our district Üsküdar as the pilot region. We aim to implement this project, starting in Üsküdar and then planning its widespread expansion. We even wish for this project to be applicable in other provinces. I believe this project will create a different dimension of awareness through a strong collaboration among civil society, provincial national education, and the university. Belma Satır noted that since they took office, numerous institutions, organizations, and communities wanted to undertake joint work and projects with them, and said, “We prioritized this project because we are based in Üsküdar and Üsküdar Üniversitesi is a value of Üsküdar. There are several reasons for this: Firstly, children are very precious to Mrs. Emine Erdoğan. Disadvantaged groups are very precious. Abuse against women, education, and all other issues are very important. When we presented this project to her, she gladly instructed us to proceed with it. Another reason for us to proceed with this project is that Assoc. Prof. Ayşenur İslam, who served as the Minister of Family and Social Policies in the previous term in our advisory board, also stated that it was important for this project to start in Istanbul and through TOGEM, and so we began working. As our professor said, we made rapid progress in a short time. We have reached this point.” **Belma Satır: “A very well-prepared and thoroughly worked-on project”** Belma Satır, stating their special thanks to Üsküdar Üniversitesi, said, “Our professors will provide us with unconditional support. We are very excited. We will produce great work here. This project, hopefully, will be implemented not only for one year but also in the future in all districts of Istanbul and perhaps throughout Turkey.
