Noting that the controlled period has been entered in the pandemic, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, said, “We must say that it is a correct attitude for people to experience some fears during this period. This fear will push everyone to take precautions. After taking the necessary measures, they will continue with their lives and paths. The feeling of fear exists for such times. Controllable stress, controllable fear is not harmful, but beneficial. One should be afraid of uncontrollable fears.”

## “Everyone is talking, experts should speak”

Tarhan emphasized that everyone talks about the pandemic, but experts should be listened to, saying, “Actions are taken according to the words of the expert in each field. Even general practitioners cannot make decisions regarding infection or vaccination. The words of those who have worked on vaccine-preventable diseases and infectious diseases, and who are involved in this field, should be taken as a basis. One of the reasons that increases fear in social psychology is that everyone speaks up. Anyone speaks even though they do not have the profession or expertise. In our religion, every task should be given to its rightful expert. In Turkey and around the world, people turn on their televisions. They go to bed and wake up with the crisis. Because everyone has become an infectious disease expert. This situation increases fear. Non-experts read a few sources and come out to speak. If people want to overcome their fears; they need to combine logic, mind, and heart. One does not get anywhere by saying 'that expert said this'.. Evidence and statistics are looked at. Decisions are made based on data.

## He used the expression, “The method of this era is knowledge.”

Tarhan noted that the self-persuasion method should be tried to overcome fear in social psychology, saying, “For example, a person is afraid of flying but not of getting into a car. Here's how a person convinces themselves: God has given everyone the power of reason, the power of discernment, to distinguish right from wrong, good from bad. What is the power of discernment? When a person gets on a plane, they look at the probability of falling. They look at the probability of an accident for a person in normal traffic. The probability rate is the same. It's the same in medicine. A person develops a disease, and there are probable medications for that disease. If one looks at those medications and does not use them for the disease, what will you gain, what will you lose? If you use them, what will you gain, what will you lose? This is called 'zann-ı galip' (predominant assumption) in our religious literature. You cannot achieve 100% certainty; truth is found with 'zann-ı galip',” he explained.

## “The Fatih Project was wrong, we should have trained software developers”

Tarhan said, “In the 1910s, they built the Titanic, where electricity and machinery merged. As this ship set sail from England to America, newspapers headlined ‘Not even God can sink it’. An iceberg sank the ship. The emergence of Covid happened in 2019. In 2018, at Davos, global capital said, ‘We can now control big data. All three of the world's three biggest billionaires are those who use digital data. One sells internet, the others produce high technology. They said, 'We dominate big data and are trying to control the world'. A dissenting voice emerged, making a valid assessment: 'The world is heading towards digital dictatorship, we are the last free generation.' Just as digital dictatorship was about to be declared, Covid-19 broke out. Even countries like ours, who were reluctant, had to digitalize. Software and computers came to the forefront. 10 years ago in Turkey, the Fatih Project was implemented. It was encouraged, and we appreciated it, but the Fatih Project was a wrong project. Instead of distributing computers in the Fatih Project, we should have trained software developers. If we had trained software developers, we would have entered this crisis with our own platforms. Why should we rent platforms from Europe and America, and why should millions of our dollars go to them? This is a lack of foresight," he assessed.

## “We are late in digitalization”

Tarhan, drawing attention to the fact that Turkey will always be playing catch-up unless it invests in R&D, concluded his words as follows:

“We have only recently started investing in R&D in Turkey. Amazon conducts R&D with 80% of its revenue and grows. Unless Turkey invests in R&D, in the medium-long term, the world will create, and we will implement. We cannot be the subject of civilization; we will be its object. There is a serious global crisis accelerated by Covid-19 in the Western world. The New York Times reported: In 2021, three and a half million people registered for Yale University's positive psychology course. People are in search of happiness. Japan established a loneliness ministry. Suicides and acts of violence are increasing, people feel alone. Egocentrism has risen, there is a serious decadence in Western civilization. They are seeking Eastern wisdom in their solutions and teaching it as courses. Turkey needs to make efforts to teach Anatolian wisdom, Eastern wisdom, so that; we can both protect our R&D, protect our young generation, and offer an alternative. Covid-19 has offered us an opportunity for the future of the world.”
