TUBITAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also attended the program, which featured Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Yücel, President of the Turkish Cancer Institute, and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk. While Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal invited RaDiChal to Teknofest, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made a call, stating, “A 'You've Got Talent in Science' competition should be organized for young people to produce more scientific projects.”** ## İçerik ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/10/15/800/img-8336.JPG) ## **Students conducting research that could provide solutions for the treatment of rare diseases with a genetic basis gathered at the RaDiChal22 competition.** This year, 19 teams comprising 95 students participated in the competition, which consists of semi-final and final stages, initiated by the RaDiChal (Rare Disease Challenge) team established with undergraduate students under the leadership of Assistant Professor Dr. Cihan Taştan, Coordinator of Üsküdar Üniversitesi TRGENMER and RaDiChal. This year's goal for RaDiChal, which started in 2020, was determined as WU Syndrome, types of LGMD (Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy), and MS (Multiple Sclerosis), which are among the commonly observed rare diseases. Projects developed for the treatment of these diseases fiercely competed to reach the final. Projects that qualify for the final will be supported and awarded for their implementation once the evaluation process is complete. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, TUBITAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, Prof. Dr. Arif Mardinoğlu from King's College London, and Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk participated as speakers in the RaDiChal22 final program, the 3rd edition of which was held this year at the NP Dentistry and Health Campus Avicenna Auditorium by Assistant Professor Dr. Cihan Taştan and his team. President of the Turkish Cancer Institute Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Yücel and Prof. Dr. Nabbout Rima from the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium joined online to share their presentations, while Prof. Dr. Mazhar Adlı from Northwestern University also participated in the same manner, delivering a 'Guest Lecture'. ## ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/10/15/800/img-8245.JPG) ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We must provide motivation to young people regarding science”** Stating that they launched the 'Science and Ideas Festival' for high school students for the first time in Turkey in 2013, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan continued his words as follows: “At that time, we researched if there was such a competition in the world. There was no such competition organized by a university in Turkey. In the world, there was only a similar competition at a university in Oklahoma. When we look, there are tomato and cherry festivals, but no science festival. According to neuroscience, human learning is only possible in a fun and disciplined environment. We started with this aim, and the 'Science and Ideas Festival' is still ongoing. High school students prepare serious projects for us. As we saw the excitement of young people and the sparkle in their eyes, we thought it was necessary to give them an ideal. We started the festival with the support of the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education, stating that it is necessary to motivate young people about science, save them from the current events' whirlwind, and enable them to produce in the medium-long term.” ## ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/10/15/800/img-7918-1.JPG) ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “If we don't give importance to R&D, we will become objects of science”** ** **Stating that 'Science only becomes science if it's done with passion, motivation, and enthusiasm,' Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “A scientist should see the laboratory as a garden of Eden. When they enter, they won't realize how the hours pass. The project idea for Teknofest actually belongs to us. TUBITAK's budget should be allocated more to R&D than to festivals. When I researched Amazon's success, I saw the importance they gave to R&D from the budget they allocated. If we don't give importance to R&D, we will become objects of science. If we want to be subjects of science, we need to prioritize R&D.” he stated. ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “'You've Got Talent in Science' competition should be held”** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that similar works to those done at the Science and Ideas Festival are being carried out in RaDiChal, and said, “If we can support the ongoing work, beautiful results can emerge. Talent management in science is very important. Our Assistant Professor Dr. Cihan Taştan, who is at the head of RaDiChal, works in harmony with young people. One of the most important points in management is knowing how to discover and manage talent. I wish we could expand these efforts a bit more and transform them into a larger-scale organization called 'You've Got Talent in Science'. Talented young people can be brought together among universities. TUBITAK can also provide support in this regard. We can produce future Nobel candidates. To spread the love of science among young people, we must provide them with a climate of opportunity. Indeed, today, scientific robustness is also required to prove the accuracy of information.” he said. ## ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/10/15/800/img-8299.JPG) ## **Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal: “Turkey has enormous potential”** TUBITAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal stated that when the Teknofest competition started in 2018, it reached 5,000 visitors, and said, “In 2019, it became the world's largest technology festival, with 1 million 721 thousand people participating. In 2022, 600,000 of our students became competitors. This shows that Turkey has enormous potential in terms of our young friends. 600,000 of our students say, 'I am a candidate to solve today's and tomorrow's problems by using science and technology as a tool.' Teknofest means youth, it means our future. Therefore, as someone who refers to this situation the most, we thank our esteemed Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan.” he said. ## **Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal: “We invite RaDiChal to Teknofest”** Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal emphasized that the relative proportional increase they observed this year was directed towards young people, and said, “I would also like to state the amount we spent. It's only 1% of our budget. Unfortunately, I state it as a small amount. This is not specifically a scientist support program; it's something we contribute to within the scope of science popularization. Of course, within Teknofest, we organize 15 competitions with the participation of countless institutions. There is the 'Biotechnological Innovation Competition,' in which our esteemed Cihan also participates, but in essence, one can also take part in many other competitions. If there is a demand, we would be delighted for RaDiChal to take part in Teknofest and to organize it together as the fourth 'Biotechnological Innovation' competition. We can also easily manage the coverage of its expenses.” he stated. ## ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/10/15/800/img-8208.JPG) ## **RaDiChal reached 400 students in 6 countries** Üsküdar Üniversitesi TRGENMER Coordinator Assistant Professor Dr. Cihan Taştan stated that naming the competition RaDiChal was related to their work on very rare diseases, and continued his words as follows: “It was very important for our master's, undergraduate, and doctoral students to take rare diseases, which very few people work on, as their concern, and at the same time, to organize social awareness activities not only by working in the laboratory but also on social media, within the community. We call diseases that occur in 1 out of 2,000 people or much more rarely, 'rare diseases'. In the RaDiChal competition, since 2020, we have been encouraging students to create treatment-oriented projects by selecting 3 different rare diseases each year. So far, 89 university teams consisting of 400 students from 6 countries have participated in our competition. This year, from among rare diseases, we selected WU Syndrome, types of LGMD (Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy), and MS (Multiple Sclerosis). 10 out of 19 teams made it to the final.
