## Özet

**While the statements of Prof. Dr. Üstün Dökmen, who claimed that veiled women should not be psychologists and psychiatrists, continue to be debated in public, Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, in his article titled “The Headscarf in the Social Psychology Laboratory,” written in 2008 when headscarf bans in public institutions were still in effect, examined the issue with an objective approach, stating that belief should be evaluated in a scientific category and presenting a different perspective. Prof. Dr. Tarhan had also elaborated on the issue in his book Asymmetric Warfare, written in 2010, steadfastly maintaining his objective stance.**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan had highlighted the importance of the headscarf in his article published on the website of the Association of Defenders of Justice (Adaleti Savunanlar Derneği) in 2008. In the article, which addressed topics such as why the headscarf should be worn, the obligations of a headscarf-wearing person, and its significance, Tarhan underlined that a Muslim woman who wears a headscarf because Allah commanded it must fulfill the requirements of the religion and act in accordance with the headscarf. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also stated how dangerous individuals who wear and use the headscarf in inappropriate ways (Ideological – Political) could be, and how they could harm religion. The full article is as follows:

**The Headscarf in the Social Psychology Laboratory**

***Those who cover their heads:***

*If you cover without believing, take off your headscarf.*

*If you cover it as a political symbol, take it off.*

*If you cover it due to neighborhood pressure, take it off.*

*If you cover it due to your father's pressure, take it off.*

*If you cover it due to your husband's pressure, take it off.*

*If you cover it due to your elder brother's pressure, take it off.*

*If you cover it because it gains favor in your environment, take off your headscarf.*

*If you cover it because it's a tradition, take it off.*

*If you cover your head because it makes you more beautiful, take it off.*

*If you cover it for Allah, we congratulate you.*

*If you cover it because you believe, we congratulate you.*

*If you cover it as a religious necessity, we congratulate you, continue. However, do not forget that you are no longer free. You cannot walk around chewing gum with a headscarf. You cannot be intimately entwined with the opposite sex. Do not forget that you now represent certain values.*

*If you cover yourself because you believe, fill it with meaning. While setting an example with your honesty, diligence, and tolerance; you should also be more careful in your moral understanding and conduct.*

*Because the headscarf is both a right and a value for you.*

*It is a right; because it is not a concept that emerged later. It has a history of 1400 years. Therefore, live as you cover. Cover as you live.*

***Those who oppose:***

*If you oppose the headscarf because it reminds you of death, desist. Death exists and is real.*

*If you oppose the headscarf due to your anti-religious stance, desist. You cannot destroy religion's power to console and add meaning to life.*

*If you oppose the headscarf because you are afraid, analyze your fear.*

*If your fear stems from a religious datum, discuss that datum.*

*If your fear stems from misinterpretations of religion, strive to find or create a correct interpretation.*

*If your fear stems from neighborhood pressure in small towns and Anatolia, engage in dialogue with people. Undertake a mission to create a consciousness of living together. Eliminating a ban with another ban cannot be a solution.*

*If your fear stems from becoming like Iran, oppose radicalism instead of opposing the headscarf.*

*If your fear stems from Atatürkism being in danger, question which Atatürk you are defending.*

*If your fear stems from the Republic being in danger, question whether you are defending the “Single-Party Republic” or the “Multi-Party Republic.”*

*If the reason for your fear is the loss of freedoms, then produce solutions that will provide an environment where everyone can live freely.*

*If your fear arises from secularism being in danger, question whether you are confusing secularism with anti-religious sentiment.*

*If your fear is losing what you have, question whether you are fighting against the assets you have acquired with the method of “thought against thought.”*

*If you feel you are being called ‘irreligious’ when you see a veiled person, desist. Because this may be your perception. Jumping to conclusions by reading intentions leads one to reality blindness.*

*If you see a veiled woman and think, ‘there is no such practice in religion,’ let the experts on the subject say that. Do not commit scientific ignorance.*

*If you evaluate the headscarf as ‘backwardness,’ see that true backwardness is preventing the right to learn. Fighting backwardness is fighting ignorance; it is not fighting religion.*

*If you see veiled people as ‘people who restrict themselves,’ respect those who give up their pleasures for the values they believe in.*

*If veiled people remind you of ‘Osama Bin Laden,’ change your mental map. Do not forget that radical religious understanding killed three caliphs at the very beginning of the emergence of the Islamic religion.*

*If you fear ‘religious fascism’ when you see a headscarf, do not commit the injustice of saying ‘all Germans are fascists’ based on Hitler.*

*If veiled people give you the impression that ‘you are under threat,’ ask yourself if you are personalizing the issue. Try talking to veiled people. Dialogues illuminate prejudices.*

*If you are in favor of forcibly covering someone's head, you are tyrannical. Salafist, Kharijite radicalism in Islamic history foresaw this.*

*If you forcibly uncover someone's head, you are also tyrannical. This situation is proof that you have turned anti-religious sentiment into dogma: Confront yourself. Perhaps you are advocating ‘Modern Tyranny’.*

*If you want to enforce your dogmas using force, you belong to the Middle Ages. It doesn't matter whether you appear religious or modern.*

*If you oppose a young girl living according to the requirements of her beliefs, without political demands, it means you are also opposing secularism.*

*If you consider it contrary to secularism for families without political demands to teach their children the moral norms prescribed by religion or to give religious lessons; this behavior is not scientific, contemporary, progressive, or suitable for enlightenment. Produce alternatives.*

*Do not interfere with doctors, engineers, or officers who have no political demands but wish to practice their religion. It means you are stuck in the Cartesian period of enlightenment. An officer or doctor who feels accountable to Allah is a chance for the country.*

*If you oppose those who have no political demands but combine the comforting power of religion, its ability to give meaning to life, and the idea of foreseeing life after death with science, it means you are also against scientific development and the advancement of thought.*

*If you oppose the headscarf because ‘some politicians support it,’ question your democratic credentials.*

*If you oppose thinking ‘the headscarf is being exploited,’ try the best way to understand those who exploit it and those who do not.*

*The laboratory that distinguishes those who exploit this issue from those who do not, and the prejudiced from the unprejudiced, are social spaces. Allow it freely in universities. Observe for three, five years. If public order is disturbed and the rights of unveiled people are taken away, do not be foolish; fight your battle.*

*If you are a soldier and your intuitions foretell a danger that will threaten Turkey's future; universities will be social psychology laboratories for you. Thus, you too will test and see: Is public order being disturbed despite provocations, or not?*

*The best way to show the language of human behavior, whether lies are told, to understand intentions, and to overcome fears, is trial and error.*

*The trial-and-error method is always risky, but to prevent radicalism, this risk must be taken.*

*Justice requires courage, just as finding truths requires taking risks.*

*Freedom and peace have never been easily achieved in history.*

*Some cover the outside of their heads, some cover the inside. For this, the social psychology laboratory is the most effective place for scientific experimentation and observation.*

*Turkey can seize the opportunity to develop its own modernism and become a model for the world.*

*In this matter, our guide should be reason and science.*

*Science does not imitate belief but neither does it threaten it. It examines, reports, and presents it on the stage of history. Universities, in particular, do not close their doors to any idea. They analyze, they interpret. This should be the universal approach.*

*Belief is a scientific category. Let's not miss the opportunity for universities to be social psychological laboratories. With the wish that our Turkey will overcome this challenge in a way that sets an example for the world…*
