It is necessary to share right and wrong, good and bad with individuals with disabilities. The most important sentence here is: ‘love, value, and share.’”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, who was a guest on the Instagram broadcast titled “Meetings Without Barriers,” organized by the Presidency of Religious Affairs and the Istanbul Mufti's Office Disability Coordination, made important statements at the event moderated by Sema Çakır, Istanbul Mufti's Office Disability Coordinator.

## **“If individual prejudices disappear, communication can be established much more easily“**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized the importance of understanding, protecting, and looking after individuals with disabilities in society; “Rarely in our society do cruel types emerge who approach individuals with disabilities with ill intentions. Apart from this, one of the mistakes we make with good intentions is pitying them. This is wrong; it is necessary to include them in society under the name of purpose. Individuals with disabilities should see life not as barriers but as situations to be overcome. Empathizing with them is also very important. If individual prejudices disappear, communication can be established very easily. Evaluating the disadvantages of individuals with disabilities and socializing them is the fine point here. Pitying and feeling sorry is wrong. Understanding individuals with disabilities is very important.” he said.

## “**Individuals with disabilities should give new meaning to their lives”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the fact that individuals with disabilities go through certain stages when accepting what happens in their lives, continued as follows:

“There are points where human power is insufficient. In places where control and power are insufficient, it is very important to seek refuge in an all-knowing, all-controlling power. Every situation and event can happen to a person in life. The important thing is to manage all of these correctly. A person with a disabled child first experiences denial, then protest, then shock. Then comes depression, after which the person goes through stages of acceptance and giving new meaning. With the giving of meaning, life becomes more manageable. If a person asks 'why' and complains, their task becomes very difficult. Internal controls may be within us, but external controls, unfortunately, are not within our will. This process should be in the form of 'accept, give new meaning, and manage.' Individuals with disabilities should give new meaning to their lives.”

## **“We must make individuals with disabilities feel empathy”**

Tarhan also touched upon how approaches and behaviors towards individuals with disabilities should be; “If we treat a disabled person we meet in an elevator as if we are talking to a healthy person, instead of looking at them with pity, they will feel valued. Their fear will disappear, and trust will take its place. They like to feel strong in their psychological mechanisms. It is necessary to focus on what the individuals with disabilities' focus of interest is. Showing interest without making them feel worthless makes the individual happy. It is very important to approach disability in a way that treats it. Motivating them, saying 'you are not alone,' 'you can succeed,' 'you are important in life,' provides great psychological support. These individuals need to be socialized and included in society. Isolating them at home is not a solution. When talking and establishing dialogue, we must make individuals with disabilities feel empathy.” he said.

## “**Love, value, and share”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the language of love should be used towards individuals with disabilities; “Humans are relational beings. Our minds are not programmed to live alone. Leaving a disabled person alone at home makes them feel bad. It is not very difficult to ask for their opinion, greet them, and smile. The individual should feel valued. Nothing unique can be humiliated. Looking down on them is the greatest sin. They also have their own talents. Supporting them is very important. Abstract goals are more important than anything else. Concrete goals are always present. But a person must also be ready for abstract goals. We must know that their feelings are important. It is necessary to share right and wrong, good and bad with these individuals. The most important sentence here is: love, value, and share.” he concluded.
