## Özet

**Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan; was a guest at the Book Analysis event organized by Genç İHH. Prof. Dr. Tarhan made remarkable statements about Victor E. Frankl’s work “Man’s Search for Meaning,” which has been translated into over thirty languages and become a bedside book worldwide. Tarhan noted that Frankl suggested healing by sharing suffering instead of escaping it, emphasizing that finding a ‘meaning’ amidst all difficulties and pursuing it is equivalent to continuing life. **

## **“Those who seek meaning, those who carry hope, succeed in staying alive”**

Tarhan made remarkable assessments about the human sense of searching for meaning, sharing insights based on Victor E. Frankl’s work “Man’s Search for Meaning.” In the online program, Tarhan stated; “Psychiatrist Victor E. Frankl was born in Vienna. In 1943, during the period when Jewish minorities were taken to concentration camps by Hitler, he was also taken to a camp. Due to his Nazi doctrine, Hitler considered his own racial ego superior, and his practices are among the most well-known examples of ethnic narcissism. Frankl, a psychiatrist, worked on a treatment like talk therapy, called Logotherapy, in the concentration camps. He observed who managed to survive in the camps and who did not. As a result of these observations, he laid the foundations of existential psychology related to the search for meaning. He revealed the purpose of existence and is considered one of the pioneers of humanist psychology. In response to Hitler and his malevolent side, he brought to the forefront the perspective that ‘Humans are not inherently evil, they are good by birth, and evil is incidental.’ However, humans are born with a predisposition to both good and evil. Whichever part one nurtures within themselves, that is what develops. Giving meaning to something is one of the most important things for a person to survive. Those who seek meaning, those who carry hope, those who say 'I will be saved,' those who pursue meaning without losing hope, survive Hitler’s tortures without dying, they manage to stay alive. Therefore, the author’s words are very important: ‘There is nothing more effective in the world for surviving even in the worst conditions than the knowledge that life has a meaning.’ We can express this as the main essence, the idea, of the book.”

## **“It is necessary to share suffering, not to run from it or fight it”**

Tarhan stated that the author drew attention to healing by sharing suffering rather than escaping it, emphasizing that finding a ‘meaning’ amidst all difficulties and pursuing it is equivalent to continuing life. Tarhan said; “Another important point highlighted in the book is ‘not running from suffering, not fighting suffering; but sharing suffering.’ The author specifically recommends sharing suffering based on his experiences in Nazi society. He expresses this with the words: “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If you find meaning in suffering, you can continue to suffer and tolerate the pain.” Frankl emphasizes the concepts of meaning and purpose for human survival. The souls of people experiencing these difficulties are adrift in emptiness. In the midst of war, the pursuit of meaning became a rope to cling to, a hope for him. Practicing Logotherapy and making war observations, and turning this into an ideal, enabled him to survive. He also turned his experiences there into a book. While emphasizing the importance of setting goals, the author only highlights worldly goals and limits his aims to these. That is, he cannot provide much explanation regarding death and the afterlife. There was not much information about death and the afterlife in the Torah, he does not attach much importance to that subject. Therefore, he tries to add meaning with a secularized perspective.” he said.

## **“Depression has become a social virus, changing people’s philosophy of life”**

Tarhan stated that the recently occurring Civilization Crisis Syndrome can be resolved with Frankl's recommended meaning-seeking method, underlining that modernism's solutions do not benefit people. Tarhan said; “Current psychiatry, popular culture, and modernism are doing the exact opposite of what Viktor Frankl suggested. That is, they prefer to avoid suffering rather than confront and manage it. The California Syndrome is modernism's civilization crisis syndrome. This syndrome has 4 characteristics, a philosophy of life. Its first tenet is Hedonism, stating that the purpose of life is to pursue pleasure. Whereas Viktor Frankl said the purpose of life was ‘have a purpose in life, that is, one must be part of a meaning, human tears are sacred.’ He said, ‘Tears show your courage to confront pain. Therefore, do not be afraid of tears.’ He said, ‘I prefer to manage pain instead of fighting it, do not see pain as an enemy, but rather as an opportunity to develop yourself by experiencing it.’ This is also, in a way, the teaching of ancient culture and Anatolian wisdom. Frankl tried to treat people overwhelmed by pain, hardship, and stress by asking 'What is the meaning of your life? Seek meaning.' At that time, he tried to protect people amidst scarcity; now there is abundance, prosperity, wealth, yet people are free from suffering. Now they are investigating why depression has increased so much, wondering if there is a virus; depression has become a social virus, changing people's philosophy of life. The entertainment industry has now entered all our homes. People have never been this close to technology.” he stated.

## **“Frankl’s philosophy is not enough; managing pleasures is more important”**

Tarhan stated that the modern world provides a large comfort zone, drawing attention to the importance and difficulty of managing pleasures in such a world. Tarhan said; “Currently, humanity is adrift. In drifting people, faith does not turn into morality, and questioning about faith begins. The world is so attractive that if everything goes well, a person doesn't think about death. But when there is a disease, a trouble, a calamity – for example, during the pandemic – people realized their bodily comforts were disrupted, they saw their incapacities and weaknesses, and they began to search for meaning. These calamities push people towards a search for meaning. For this reason, Viktor Frankl's approach of confronting suffering and finding meaning in it to progress in life is not applicable to all circumstances; being able to manage pleasures and extract meaning from them has become more important. Positive science says, 'I do not concern myself with purpose or meaning; I look at how the universe works, how cells work, how physics and chemistry work.' But those who deal with value philosophy, religious scholars, and those dealing with psychology and psychiatry must examine meaning and purpose. What distinguishes humans from animals is that everything in animals is genetically coded; eating, drinking, sheltering, sleeping. In the imagination of a lion or a cat, there is meat, bone, and food. But the human imagination differs from person to person. A human child and an animal child are different; humans are born prematurely. Unlike other living beings, humans have an incredible will; animals do not have such free will.” he said.

## **“A wise person tries to invest in an unlimited life while in a limited life”**

A person grasps meaning if they find answers to two questions in their search for meaning. Firstly, they know the world is mortal; humans are the only living beings who know they will die. Humans have a perception of past, future, and present; they have a death awareness gene, a meaning-seeking gene. Another is the novelty-seeking gene in humans. Currently, the spirit of the age will hopefully be in the hands of those who unite religion and science. At the top of our goals, there should be the highest goals, abstract goals. If a person pursues concrete material satisfaction in life, they remain at an animalistic level, like eating, drinking, sheltering. A wise person is someone who thinks long-term. Therefore, a person will also think about the afterlife, and in their search for meaning, they will say after death: ‘I have a limited life; how can I gain an eternal and unlimited life within this limited life?’ Death is a bitter reality, but humans have a desire for immortality. Just as the feeling of hunger in our stomachs indicates the existence of food, so too do we have a desire for immortality and eternity in our souls. This also indicates the existence of eternity. For this reason, one of the Islamic scholars says, ‘If Allah did not want to give to humanity, He would not have given them the desire to ask.’ That is, Allah has given us eternal life; this alone indicates the existence of eternal life. Therefore, a wise person tells their brain in the laboratory of thought that this world is finite, that there are no exceptions. Therefore, this world is a simulation; real life is after this world, and it is best to invest in that. A wise person tries to invest in an unlimited life while in a limited life.” he said.
