## **“Artificial intelligence is seriously directing us”**

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, who explained how technology should be used in the program also attended by Düzce University Rector Prof. Nedim Sözbir, said; “Previously, the half-life of information was 30 years. Now it has dropped to a few months in some professions. Such a rapid transformation is taking place. Things that seem like obstacles here, such as artificial intelligence, actually appear to be a threat, but the opportunity dimension is greater. In other words, if we become slaves to artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence seriously directs us. Its algorithms are not transparent. If we become masters of artificial intelligence, if we use artificial intelligence as an assistant, artificial intelligence will make our lives much easier. That is, technology accelerates our lives, values guide our lives. Values are a compass in our lives. Young people are currently experiencing a global value confusion. The philosophy of life has changed globally. There is a race between socio-economic indicators and moral indicators. In this race, the trend against moral indicators is faster. People used to live a calmer life, but now it’s not like that. There is such a fast pace of life that the three ‘H’s: pleasure, speed, and ambition have increased. In other words, both the global system and the capitalist system support this very well.”

## **“We need to choose modernization while preserving our own culture”**

Stating that young people need to change their thought patterns, Tarhan said; “In 1998, we started the first method of treating psychiatric conditions in Turkey by measuring brain imaging and brain functions. Therefore, we need to think outside the box. One of the biggest obstacles is ourselves. Unfortunately, culturally, we are in the mindset that Western culture is superior, our culture is inferior, and we should imitate it. That is the biggest obstacle for young people. We will surpass the West on the same path of civilization; let’s set this as a goal. If we set goals, we will overcome ourselves, but we must always choose modernization while preserving our own culture.”

## **“Human is the only being with a time perspective”**

Stating that for a person to use their resources correctly, they must know their purpose in life, Tarhan said; “As a person progresses on the path of life, the more they enrich their social capital, just like financial capital, the more effective and successful they become in relationships between people. While doing this, the most important thing is to pursue one’s goals. You take a glass. What is the purpose of that glass? It is for drinking things. You buy a washing machine, what is its purpose? It is for washing clothes. When you examine the human body, for example, when you examine a lion, we see claws, we see teeth, these are for tearing. When you examine a human, a human is not just about eating, drinking, reproducing, sheltering; a human is in search of meaning. There are four basic anxieties. One is the search for meaning, the second is the search for freedom... These are not present in other living beings. All of them are just this much in their genetic codes. That is, the areas marked by a lion, tiger, dog with their urine are security zones. If you don’t enter there, it won’t bother you. If you enter, it will attack, this is how it is. But humans do not have these boundaries. The search for freedom, overcoming loneliness, the need for attachment... And the need to explain death. That is, human is the only being with a time perspective. Genetic codes related to these have been researched, and some of their genetic codes have been found.”

## **“Attention management is very important in academic success”**

Referring to the risks that need to be considered in technology use, Tarhan said; “Currently, books are being written in France about ‘scrolling.’ In fact, screens are now strictly banned for ages 0-3. Because it causes so much harm that it prevents the development of white matter in the brain. For example, a baby even makes a scrolling motion in its sleep. That is, the mother gives the child a screen as a cheap babysitter, and while the child is occupied with it all day, the mother attends to her work. Here, delayed speech occurs in the child because the brain’s word production ability does not develop. Delayed speech means autism. Digital autism is being talked about now. In other words, those with excessive screen exposure to digital media have high academic intelligence, but their social and emotional intelligence becomes valueless. They cannot initiate communication, establish social communication, or have conversations. Screen exposure has increased, and screen bullying is increasing. Due to the increase in screen bullying, another factor that prevents socialization and causes excessive social isolation is digitalization. Therefore, attention management is very important in academic success. Young people now cannot pay attention, they get bored quickly.”

## **“The human brain works with purposeful behavior”**

Stating that someone without a vision cannot manage resources correctly, Tarhan said; “Young people, instead of saying, ‘I will study between 5 and 6,’ set concrete goals for yourselves like, ‘I will study for half an hour every day,’ and plan your day accordingly. Making short-term plans, medium-term and long-term plans is important. If this is done, the human brain works with purposeful behavior. A person who can act purposefully also manages their resources well. In fact, the word ‘iktisat’ in Arabic is interesting. For example, it is used as economy in our language. ‘Tasarruf’ comes from French, it is used as the equivalent of saving. The word ‘iktisat’ in Arabic comes from the root ‘maksat’ (purpose). First, you will determine your purpose, and then you will invest resources accordingly. It is actually about using resources efficiently. Otherwise, misers and tightwads deplete them. Without a goal, a person cannot manage human resources. That is, setting a vision and mission is important here. Someone without a vision cannot manage resources.”

## **“Those who succeed in questioning and critical thinking will outperform their peers in the future”**

Stating that the globally distracting situation is digitalization, Tarhan said; “The left brain gives the command to do, and the right brain gives the command not to do. One says do, do, do, and the other says don’t, don’t. There are even split-brain studies. In people where the two hemispheres in the middle of the brain work unaware of each other, for example, the left brain says take something from the shelf with the right hand, and the right brain says don’t take it. This is seen in split-brain studies. This means that in everything we do, there is a prefrontal cortex, a mental jury in our brain. It decides whether something is appropriate-inappropriate, valid-invalid, useful-not useful, safe-unsafe, correct-incorrect. This jury also has a judge. That judge decides whether to do this or not to do this. The prefrontal cortex in our brain is not developed in children. It develops as children grow. Attention span also lengthens with age. Attention in children is very short. Currently, the globally distracting thing is excessive digitalization. This prevents deep learning. Analytical thinking, critical thinking, deep thinking... All of these are skills. It prevents their development. Individuals who learn deep learning, who succeed in questioning and critical thinking, will outperform their peers in the future.”

## **“Believers cannot achieve the peace of that belief”**

Stating that meaning and faith play an important role in managing one’s life, Tarhan said; “Hazrat Mevlana has a saying, ‘If you want a friend, Allah is enough; if you want a companion, the Quran is enough; if you want an enemy, your ego is enough; if you want advice, death is enough.’ When it says if you want a friend, Allah is enough, it means being friends with Allah, establishing a heartfelt connection... That state called ‘rabıta’. As soon as a person connects with Allah, they pray. Certain hormones work during prayers, but a kind of emotional and mental preparation is required for this prayer. Prayer makes a person feel not alone. There are things a person can change, and things they cannot change. There are things they can control, and things they cannot control. In such situations, being part of a higher meaning is one of those treatments. This is called radical acceptance. If a person accepts what they cannot change, what they do not have the power to change, and becomes part of a higher context, then they do not fall into pessimism. It is important to achieve the peace of faith in this world. Currently, believing people cannot achieve the peace of that belief. This means it is because their surrender is weak. In other words, a depth is needed to capture those feelings.”

## **“Artificial intelligence will teach everything but cannot teach wisdom”**

Stating that humanity needs not only material development but also a renewed search for meaning and wisdom, Tarhan said; “The social capital of the East and the financial capital of the West have collapsed. Currently, there is an epidemic of depression in the West, an epidemic of narcissism. Books like ‘Narcissism Epidemic’ have been published in the US. Because it has increased to 60 percent among young people, shattered. It has been rising since 2015. And in many places, it is one of the epidemics of loneliness... The UK and Japan established Ministries of Loneliness. This is a global threat. That is why the 21st century must be the age of wisdom. Artificial intelligence will teach everything but cannot teach wisdom. There is a wisdom about wisdom (irfan). Knowledge (ilim) is separate, wisdom (irfan) is separate. Knowledge is within theoretical information. You can be a scientist, but you cannot be ‘arif’ (wise/knowing). To be ‘arif’, Sufism teaches us wisdom. Sufism teaches wisdom.”
