## Özet

**Speaking at the 13th International Bediüzzaman Symposium, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated Said Nursî's influence on people through the lens of personal disinterestedness, ikhlas, and a positive action approach. Tarhan stated that Bediüzzaman's greatest strength was "personal disinterestedness", which is a prophetic method, and said that Nursî put forward an an approach that unites reason with the heart. Tarhan said, 'How did he influence people when there was no wealth or state behind him? This is a rare situation in terms of human psychology.'**

**In his speech, Tarhan also shared his academic goals regarding Risale-i Nur studies, stating that the decision to establish a Risale-i Nur Institute or a Bediüzzaman Said Nursî Institute was unanimously approved by the Üsküdar University Senate and is awaiting approval from YÖK. Tarhan expressed their desire to conduct postgraduate studies in the field of "new ilm-i kalam" if the necessary conditions are met.**

President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan delivered his speech titled "Conception of Civilization in the New World Order" at the 13th International Bediüzzaman Symposium held under the theme of "Quranic Solutions to Global Crises".

Beginning his speech by thanking those who contributed to the organization of the symposium held at Istanbul AKM, Prof. Tarhan stated that he tried to understand the impact of Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's thoughts and works from a professional perspective.

## **“How did he influence people when there was no wealth or state behind him?”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that Said Nursî lived under oppression and surveillance for many years, and his contact with the world was restricted, yet his works continue to be read in different countries.

Prof. Tarhan said, 'What did Bediüzzaman Said Nursî do to be so influential? I have always wondered this. He endured solitary hardship for 28 years. State institutions were monitoring him. His contact with the world was restricted, forbidden. Currently, his written works are read in over fifty countries, and the 13th Bediüzzaman Symposium is being held. How did Said Nursî influence people when there was no wealth or state behind him? This is a rare situation in terms of human psychology.'

## **“What impressed me most was his acting with personal disinterestedness”**

Prof. Tarhan emphasized that the most striking feature and greatest strength in Said Nursî's life was personal disinterestedness, which is a prophetic method, and stated that this approach should be evaluated together with the "principle of contentment".

Prof. Tarhan said, 'What impressed me was his acting with personal disinterestedness. The principle of contentment is a very important principle. Not taking anything from anyone, not accepting gifts; and even paying for gifts brought to him... '

Prof. Tarhan stated that Nursî did not leave behind any material wealth when he passed away, and expressed that his true legacy was his works.

## **“I attribute the secret of this influence to the ethics of ikhlas”**

Prof. Tarhan, explaining Bediüzzaman's influence through the concept of ikhlas, pointed out that not only the work done, but also the intention behind it, is decisive.

Prof. Tarhan said, 'I attribute the secret of Bediüzzaman's influence to the ethics of ikhlas. The greatest strength was ikhlas. He describes ikhlas as: 'sincere ikhlas'. Ikhlas is doing something for the sake of Allah's pleasure. But by saying 'sincere ikhlas', he reinforces the meaning of ikhlas. That it should be from the heart, from the soul... '

Prof. Tarhan stated that there was no pursuit of ostentation or fame in Nursî's approach, and continued his words as follows:

“Bediüzzaman Said Nursî acts according to the principle of ikhlas. There is good intention and sincerity here. There is no playing to the gallery. There is no chasing applause. He acts entirely in accordance with ikhlas, entirely for divine pleasure.'

## **“Principle of good effort, positive action”**

Prof. Tarhan, stating that good intention should be considered alongside effort, explained Said Nursî's stance on this matter with the understanding of "positive action", saying, 'The greatest principle of good effort demonstrated by Bediüzzaman Hazretleri is positive action. There is no tripping others, no trickery or intrigue. He says, 'I found the greatest trick in tricklessness.''

Prof. Tarhan, evaluating Nursî's avoidance of personal gain together with his aim for divine pleasure, stated that ikhlas and positive action complemented each other in his line of thought and life.

## **“He tried to convey the truth as a one-man majority”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that Bediüzzaman's solitary struggle found resonance in different geographies over time, saying, 'Bediüzzaman tried to convey the truth to the world as a one-man majority. We see that study centers, dormitories, and houses related to him have been opened everywhere from the Philippines to North America. People are finding solutions to their problems and providing remedies for the spiritual wounds of this era.'

Prof. Tarhan, stating that this influence was not limited to the reading of his works, also drew attention to the master's and doctoral theses written on Said Nursî and Risale-i Nur.

## **“While doing this, he unites reason with the heart”**

Prof. Tarhan emphasized that one of the important features of Said Nursî's method was to address reason and heart together, evaluating this approach through the concepts of "new ilm-i kalam" and "tajdid" (renewal), and said, 'While doing this, he unites reason with the heart.'

Prof. Tarhan pointed out the importance of an approach that goes beyond focusing on differences of opinion among Kalam traditions, and stated that Nursî addressed doubts concerning religion and faith in a way that suited the needs of the era.

## **“We need to bring ilm-i kalam down to high school level”**

In his speech, Prof. Tarhan also stated that knowledge of kalam needs to be made understandable to answer young people's questions about faith, and recounted that he shared this idea at a conference he attended in the past titled "Changing World and Youth".

Prof. Tarhan used the expressions, 'At that conference, I said, 'We need to bring ilm-i kalam down to high school level.' '

## **Institute decision passed unanimously by the University Senate**

At the end of his speech, Prof. Tarhan, sharing his goals for the academic development of Risale-i Nur research, said that they intend to conduct studies in the field of new ilm-i kalam if an institute is established and postgraduate programs are opened.

Prof. Tarhan said, 'If fate permits, and an institute is established and master's programs begin, I plan to open new ilm-i kalam as a main branch of science and have master's theses written. Hopefully, I express this as an intention on this occasion.'

Prof. Tarhan, stating that the process for establishing an institute at Üsküdar University is ongoing, concluded his words as follows:

“This passed unanimously by the University Senate. The decision to establish a Risale-i Nur Institute or a Bediüzzaman Said Nursî Institute is currently awaiting approval from YÖK. Hopefully, with the prayers of the listeners and participants here, that will also come to fruition soon.'
