## **“Luck is where intelligence and opportunity intersect”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, President of Üsküdar University, stated that today's youth have more opportunities compared to young people in past periods, and emphasized that risks can be turned into opportunities with correct positioning. Tarhan said; “Today's youth, I believe, are luckier than the youth of 50 or 100 years ago. Let's not say unlucky; they are luckier. There are many risks, but also many opportunities. In Chinese, the word for danger, the word for risk, consists of two concepts. One is danger, and the other is opportunity. So, behind every risky behavior, there is a threat, but also an opportunity. Therefore, the youth of today are the youth of the ecosystem. The youth of the system we live in. Compared to older periods, there are tremendous opportunities ahead of them. The opportunities brought by the digital age are far greater than its risks and threats, but the whole point is to take a position. Lucky people are not born lucky. Luck is where intelligence and opportunity intersect. That is, if someone takes the right position, they become lucky. If a person has the right equipment in life, they will seize new opportunities.”

## **“Social media is digital fast food”**

Drawing attention to the usage patterns of digital platforms and social media, Tarhan stated that uncontrolled use of these areas could lead individuals to “digital obesity.” Tarhan said; “Fast food has made life easier, everyone tries to eat fast food. Social media is digital fast food. If you eat fast food occasionally, there's no harm in a certain amount, but if you eat fast food 24 hours a day, you become obese. You get sick at an early age and deal with many illnesses. Currently, the biggest danger in the world is obesity. The reason for that is the fast food culture. Just as with food fast food, a digital object appears before us on social media, or with artificial intelligence, or in front of a screen. If we consume this continuously, we become digitally obese, just like eating fast food. If we become obese, it's also because the global economy isn't just competing to make money right now. It's competing to win our attention. In fact, one of these search engines has the slogan, ‘Our only rival is sleep.’ It says, ‘Only during sleep can I keep that person out of our control; I can control them at any other time except sleep.’ Search engines have set up persuasion labs. A persuasion lab asks, ‘How do we persuade?’ and develops personalized robots. Whatever that person's interest is, it identifies keywords related to it, and videos related to those keywords appear before them. We all see it,” he said.

## **“This socialization prevents us from deep and meaningful thinking”**

Tarhan stated that the human brain's learning and meaning-making process consists of certain stages, and expressed that the superficial interactions offered by social media can distance people from deep thinking and forming meaningful relationships. Tarhan said; “The learning model in animals is eating, drinking, reproducing, sheltering, but the human brain's mode of operation is different. There are six steps. First, it wonders about something. After wondering, it tries to assign meaning to it. It asks 'Why?' questions. The question 'How?' is not enough for the human brain. It asks the 5W1H questions. In the third stage, it assigns value to it. It assigns value by asking if it is appropriate or not, valid or not, useful or not, safe or not. In the fourth stage, it accepts this. In the fifth stage, it connects with it. In the sixth stage, it feels a sense of belonging. The need to form attachments is a fundamental human need. For example, there are superficial relationships on social media, but you don't form deep, meaningful relationships there; it's always superficial. The reason for distraction is scrolling. It looks like socialization, but it's not socialization. It's superficial socialization. This socialization prevents us from deep and meaningful thinking,” he said.

## **How should a true friend be?**

Tarhan stated that the concept of friendship cannot be explained solely by companionship, emphasizing that true friendship is built on trust, sincerity, and not expecting anything in return. Tarhan said; “There is no equivalent for the word 'dostluk' (close friendship/intimate companionship) in English. 'Friend' means 'arkadaş.' They say 'friendship,' which means 'arkadaşlık.' The word for 'dostluk' has not developed in English. What is in the concept of 'dostluk'? In our culture, it is something more advanced than love and friendship. If a person is a 'dost,' they are the one you will call when you are in a difficult situation. They are the one who will speak to you without belittling you. They always speak good words behind your back and defend you against others. This happens with deep relationships. It is a strength you can take refuge in when you trust. That is why Rumi has a saying: ‘If you seek a friend, Allah is enough; if you seek companions, the Quran is enough; if you seek an enemy, your ego is enough; if you seek advice, death is enough.’ The concept of 'dost' in our culture comes from this. This 'dostluk' is a sincere friendship that leads one to truth. In this 'dostluk,' there is no self-interest, opportunism, or expectation; there is sincerity, and waiting for divine contentment. Only if this exists does it become true 'dostluk,'” he said.

## **“Being liked on social media pleases everyone”**

Tarhan emphasized that social approval is one of humanity's fundamental psychological needs, and stressed that likes on social media should not become a measure of one's self-worth. Tarhan said; “Likes are very important. Being liked on social media pleases everyone. If anyone says, ‘I don't like likes,’ they are lying. God created humans that way; people need approval. One of the psychological needs is social approval. Appreciation, praise, words of approval... There is a recommendation from Prophet Muhammad in a hadith: ‘Husbands and wives, treat each other kindly, treat each other with compliments.’ It recommends positive communication in relationships. Now, social approval is a psychological need for humans. In fact, there's a study by the University of Nebraska in the USA, researching happy couples. Three characteristics are observed. First, spending time together; second, words of appreciation, praise, and approval; third, those who go to church together. Spending time together, appreciation, praise, approval, and a spiritual dimension, commonality in life philosophies. If all three are together, it is stated as the formula for happy marriages. Liking is a feature that nourishes our brain, but it should not be a measure of self-worth for us. If you say, ‘If I'm liked, I'm valuable; if I'm not liked, I'm worthless,’ then you seek happiness dependent on external factors,” he said.

## **“The human brain works like a social laboratory”**

Tarhan emphasized that the human brain's way of evaluating and making sense of events functions like a social laboratory, stating that this process first begins in the family. Tarhan said; “The human brain works like a social laboratory. It takes events, wonders about them, assigns meaning, accepts, rejects, or connects. Humanity's search for meaning is different from other living beings. Since our brain is programmed this way, our first laboratory for discovering life is the family. The first laboratory is the family. In the family, we learn about life, human relationships, where to stand. We learn personal boundaries, emotional boundaries, privacy. We learn parental roles, fair sharing. All of these are learned in the family. After learning, school was the second laboratory. This time you learn contact with the social world. Where you will stand, where you will react, where you will say no, where you will protect your rights, where you will defend yourself against the other party... We learn three types of boundaries. We learn our identity boundaries, emotional boundaries, and privacy boundaries. This is also social media's greatest harm. It has violated privacy boundaries. The open door of the house is now. The most intimate area inside the house is the open door of the house. Home is a safe space, the family is the last fortress protecting a person. That fortress has now become a dangerous area. By hiding your identity there, you appear with all sorts of fake identities. There are fake identities, you lie, you change your identity, you enter different roles,” he said.

## **“If we use our inner compass well, it will lead us to our goal”**

Tarhan drew attention to the importance of an individual taking the right position in the face of developments encountered in the digital age, stating that using one's inner compass correctly is crucial in life's journey. Tarhan said; “If we use our inner compass well, it will lead us to our goal. If our inner compass is broken, we will be wasted in this era. If you ask what an inner compass is, it is to be a conscious young person. If a ship sets sail with a compass, the wind helps it. If it sets sail without a compass, it drifts away. It's the same in life's journey. For example, with kites. If I ask, ‘What makes a kite fly?’ you will all say ‘the wind.’ No, what makes the kite fly is not the wind, but the kite's position against the wind. Now, the position we take against the digital world can either carry us forward or sweep us away and make us fall. Digitalization is a global wind, and it's coming. Resisting or rejecting this wind will deplete us. We will benefit from this wind. We will take the right position against it,” he said.

## **“When information comes before you, ask these three questions” **

Tarhan emphasized that information encountered in the digital environment should not be accepted directly, and drew attention to the importance of questioning information in terms of truthfulness, usefulness, and conformity to human values when evaluating it. Tarhan said; “When information comes before you digitally, ask three questions. This is called Socrates’ filter. ‘Is this information real or not? Is it true or not?’ The frontal lobe of our brain does this. It matures and develops during adolescence. Verify or falsify incoming information by asking these three questions when it arrives. In the second stage, do this: ask the incoming information, ‘Is this information useful for me or not?’ First, you will say it is true, and second, ‘Is it useful or not?’ Third, is it suitable for being human, for human values? For example, being honest, hardworking, good... In our lives, there are concrete goals and also abstract goals. The capitalist system suggests concrete goals to us. There are also abstract goals. How do you want to be remembered when you reach the end of your life? For a person to have a compass, they must first have a goal, a roadmap to reach that goal, and they must acquire good habits while following that roadmap. We cannot learn what we don't like. We cannot learn what we haven't made an emotional investment in. Therefore, let's pay attention to our pyramid of love. Whatever is at the top of a person's pyramid of love is that person's sacred thing. It is the emotions that motivate us. Therefore, if we make our emotional investment correctly, we do our work with pleasure, excitement, and passion, and we never get tired. Goals and emotional investment are very important,” he said.
