## **“Our culture is losing blood very rapidly”**

Tarhan, stating that the family structure is progressively weakening, said: “The events experienced in Kahramanmaraş are actually commonly occurring worldwide. In our country, they occurred more in the form of an explosion. Hopefully, it will not repeat, but unfortunately, the trend is not quite in that direction. Currently, as a society, we are in a rapid transformation process. The world is changing very fast, but Türkiye is experiencing this change much more intensely. Europe is not that fast. America, on the other hand, is experiencing a rapid transformation of capitalist morality. In Türkiye, we have culturally adopted the capitalist morality of the USA as it is. For this reason, our culture is currently losing blood very rapidly. For instance, in Northern Europe, out-of-wedlock birth rates are very high. Around 56-59 percent. 69 percent in Iceland, 59 percent in France. In Türkiye, this rate is 2.9 percent. Now, this is a very important indicator. At this rate, in the coming decades, these rates could approach European levels in our country too, for instance, towards 40 percent in Germany. This is not a good sign at all. In recent years, a bomb has virtually been placed on the family. The family structure is weakening, and the population is trending downwards. Statistics clearly show this. The ‘Year of the Family’ was declared. It's good that it was declared, a good step even if late, but this should not remain just words,” he began his remarks.

## **“There is a youth forgetting their own roots”**

Underlining the need for social values to be re-taught to young people, Tarhan said: “Currently, young people are seriously disconnecting from our own culture. There is a youth who thinks with Western concepts, acts with modernist concepts, and forgets their own roots. Previously, our youth reactively stood up for their values, but currently, especially due to bad role models, our youth are experiencing alienation from their own values. Therefore, these values need to be re-taught,” he stated.

## **“Freedom is not balanced with responsibility”**

Emphasizing the importance of the balance between freedom and responsibility, Tarhan said: “In school violence cases, there is a situation defined as 'incel'. This means 'involuntary celibate'. That child also explains this in the manifesto he shared on Instagram. In America, a young person who killed 6 people in 2014 has a 140-page manifesto. A similar text is observed to have been written in the Kahramanmaraş incident. There are some common characteristics in these manifestos. These individuals are usually raised like a very special child. They are raised in a way where everything they say is done, and everything they want is met from an early age. They are raised being told, 'You are free, you can do it,' but because this freedom is not balanced with responsibility, an unrestrained and insatiable child type emerges.”

## **“Perceives everyone outside themselves as a threat”**

Tarhan, talking about narcissistic personality structures, said: “People of this type see themselves as very special, important, and superior. This gives rise to what we call a narcissistic personality. This is called vulnerable narcissism. There is also grandiose narcissism, types seen as having high egos, more extroverted… Today, we see examples of this in some leaders around the world, but vulnerable narcissism is different. These individuals tend to develop more hostility. They experience intense anger and hostility, becoming aggressive, saying, ‘How dare you hurt me?’ Traces of this aggression can also be seen in the texts written in such incidents. They perceive everyone outside themselves as a threat. There are even cases where they kill their parents for this reason. In the background, there is the thought, ‘I deserve this, why are you not giving me my right?’ With this perspective, the child starts to see their parents as servants. In a hadith of the Prophet, it is stated, ‘When the Day of Judgment approaches, children will become the masters of their parents.’ In fact, the current situation points to this. When such an understanding develops, the child does not hesitate to use it if they gain power or opportunity. They act with the understanding that ‘the powerful are right.’ They say, ‘I am strong, I will do this, this is my right.’ They do not care about the rights of others. In other words, the globalization of narcissism is at play here,” he said.

## **“A child should have a sense of hope for the future”**

Tarhan stated that behind peer bullying are children raised with narcissistic tendencies; “The balance between freedom and responsibility must absolutely be taught to the child. This actually begins at a very early age with walking. After a child turns one, they should be given a spoon to eat their own food, and the mother should not force-feed them. The sense of responsibility begins right here. Later, they should try to change their own clothes and learn to organize their room and belongings. If a child is instilled with responsibility in this way, they can develop a sense of hope and patience later in life. A child should have a sense of hope for the future and acquire the ability to cope with difficulties. Today, children are not sufficiently taught patience either. However, patience is of two kinds: negative patience and positive patience. Negative patience is to be patient and not rebel when a problem arises, but the really important one is positive patience. Positive patience, on the other hand, is the ability to overcome difficulties encountered while moving towards a goal. One should think, ‘How do I overcome these difficulties?’ They should not fall into pessimism and despair. However, this understanding is not sufficiently instilled in children. Today, everything is presented to children on a silver platter. They are raised like greenhouse flowers. Therefore, they scatter and break in the first storm. Children raised in this way can exhibit intense shame, anger, and a tendency towards violence when faced with rejection. When looking at the background of peer bullying, children raised with such narcissistic tendencies are often seen,” he stated.

## **“Capitalist morality reduced the philosophy of life to hedonism”**

Tarhan, stating that a pleasure-oriented approach to life has become prominent today, said: “An imitation of the Ancient Age and the period of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) has emerged. Today, humanity seems to have started producing a culture of ignorance again. This situation benefits capitalism because it fuels consumer culture. Under the name of modernism, capitalist morality reduced the philosophy of life to hedonism. That is, a pleasure-focused approach to life came to the fore. What we call hedonism is a pleasure-centered philosophy of life. This is also called the California Syndrome. Its first item is hedonism. If you like it, it's good; if you don't like it, it's bad. In other words, the measure of good and bad is determined by whether the person likes it or not. Secondly, there is egoism. If it suits one's interest, it is good; if not, it is not good. So, values changed. The understanding of right-wrong, good-bad underwent a transformation. Thirdly, as this understanding spread, loneliness began among people. Because selfish people cannot be sacrificial, giving, or sharing. This also pushes people into loneliness. Today, in the West, especially in Northern European countries, solitary deaths in old age have increased. There are elderly people who die alone at home and are not noticed for days. Fourthly, depression and unhappiness emerge. An increase in crime and violence incidents is observed. However, the West also developed its own solution to this. Inspired by Anatolian wisdom, they turned this into a scientific methodology and began to apply it. Thanks to this, a decrease in crime and violence rates is observed,” he said.

## **“We are facing the risk of a generation difficult to control”**

Underlining that values should be taught not through words but through actions, Tarhan concluded his remarks by saying: “The type of person we teach in our media and education system is generally defined as ‘intelligent and hardworking,’ but this is not enough. An intelligent and hardworking chemical engineer can go and produce synthetic marijuana. An intelligent and hardworking computer engineer can become a hacker. An intelligent and hardworking medical school graduate can engage in organ trafficking or establish a newborn gang. This means a third parameter is needed here. That is to be a good person. Virtue and morality. If we don't teach this, young people who have lost their way will grow up. These young people can also harm their parents or engage in peer bullying. Currently, we are facing the risk of a generation difficult to control. These are not learned through advice or conferences. If a person talks for hours to explain the virtue of speaking less to their child, the child will turn around and say, ‘You cannot apply this yourself, so how can I?’ Therefore, these values are taught not through words, but through actions, through the language of behavior,” he concluded his remarks.
