## Özet

**President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest on the Rahmet Sofrası program with İrfan Gündüz, broadcast on ERKAM RADIO and ERKAM TV. Tarhan addressed the topic of “Ramadan-Fasting and Psychology,” emphasizing the connection of positive psychology with the Sufi tradition, the importance of inner peace in mental health, and that the source of happiness lies within a person's inner world. Stating that Ramadan should be evaluated as an opportunity for purification, Tarhan touched upon the relationship between reliance (tevekkül), submission, faith, and trust, saying, ‘We believe in Allah, but we don't trust Him. Faith leads to tawhid (oneness of God), tawhid to tevekkül (reliance on God), and correct tevekkül to the happiness of both worlds.’ He also explained that gratitude and thankfulness strengthen mental health, that Islam's rule-based system understanding reinforces the feeling of trust, and the importance of psychological resilience with a conscious and well-founded faith in the face of life's difficulties. **

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, addressed the topic of “Ramadan-Fasting and Psychology” on ERKAM RADIO and ERKAM TV.

## **“Positive psychology is like Sufism transformed into science…”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, explaining the difference between classical psychology and positive psychology, said: “Classical psychology aims to bring the negative to zero. That is, it focuses on correcting a person’s pathology, disorder, or defect. It aims to bring them to a normal clinical level. Positive psychology, on the other hand, aims to elevate them above zero. This is called well-being. Well-being has been translated into Turkish as 'iyi oluş' or 'iyi olma hali' (state of being well). I researched its equivalent in our culture. We say 'sağlık ve afiyet' (health and well-being). Health mostly deals with zero and below, while 'afiyet' deals with above zero. When you look at prayers, you see 'sağlık ve afiyet' used together. This approach aligns with the understanding in Sufism of a person ascending to higher spiritual stations for the perfection of their soul. It is a method of positive reinforcement, strengthening the positive. Correcting the negative is a technical job that specialists handle, but moving beyond zero, developing, and strengthening is a separate stage. Today, this is called psychological resilience. If a person is psychologically resilient, for example, if they experienced depression, a crisis, or trauma, post-traumatic growth can occur after they overcome these. This process turns into a gain; the person becomes psychologically stronger. When self-realization and strengthening emerge after trauma, the trauma experienced can turn into an opportunity in life. This approach is also present in our Sufi tradition. The method in the life of the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) is also in this direction. The emphasis on teaching ethics during the Meccan period is noteworthy here. The positive psychology approach largely aligns with this understanding. Positive psychology is like Sufism having become a science today. That is, an approach that has taken on flesh and bones, based on a scientific foundation.”

## **“What truly needs to be done is to correct the causes before the consequences”**

Tarhan emphasized the importance of the health medicine approach: “There are works written in the late Ottoman period about Prophetic Medicine (Tıbb-ı Nebevî). For example, one of them is by Doctor Hüseyin Remzi. During my student years, I was curious and acquired his original manuscript. What caught my attention there was this: Today, in medical faculties in the American and general Western systems, mostly treatment medicine is taught. However, when you look at Prophetic Medicine, it teaches health medicine. That is, it focuses on questions like, ‘What should a person do not to get sick? What kind of life should one lead to avoid depression?’ My first books, written at the beginning of my professional life in the 2000s, were also within this framework. Being at Peace with Yourself, followed by Psychology of Happiness and Psychology of Marriage… All were written with a preventive mental health approach. This is essentially a primary healthcare approach, meaning health medicine. We currently see that the Ministry of Health has also adopted this approach. A healthy living master plan has been prepared, and over 300 Healthy Living Centers have been opened across Turkey. The aim is for people to get regular check-ups before getting sick, review their lifestyle, and lose weight. Because 60-70% of illnesses result from incorrect lifestyle. Wrong nutrition, faulty habits, unhealthy character and moral development… Dealing only with the consequences without correcting these is not enough. In medicine, we often try to treat the consequences. However, what truly needs to be done is to correct the causes before the consequences.”

## **“A mental refuge is a state of reliance (tevekkül) and submission”**

Tarhan emphasized that the source of happiness lies within a person's inner world: “Happiness dependent on internal reasons is a happiness that no one can change. The control is yours, but with happiness dependent on external reasons, when one says, ‘Let me have this position and be happy, let me earn this money and be happy,’ happiness becomes tied to an uncontrollable condition. In such situations, when that thing is lost, the person can fall into depression. The real question is: ‘What kind of person will you be at the end of life? What will be written on your tombstone? How do you want to be remembered? What kind of world of meaning do you have regarding life after death?’ Because for humans, the only truth without exception is the truth of death. The human brain, however, is different; it desires eternity, freedom, sociality, and immortality. It also seeks meaning. The brain is programmed this way. Other living beings do not have this level of search. This is called the genetic infrastructure related to metacognition. There are mental and genetic algorithms related to a person transcending themselves. If these algorithms are not properly nurtured and guided, the person can fall into a crisis. Irvin Yalom calls these the four fundamental anxieties of existence: the search for meaning, the search for freedom, coping with loneliness, and the effort to give meaning to death. To the extent that a person can find satisfying answers to these, they can endure suffering. If they ascribe meaning to suffering, they can endure it; if they ascribe meaning to death, they can manage it. But when they ascribe wrong meaning, at the end of life, they might turn to drugs, excessive entertainment, or escapist behaviors. They try to forget the realities, disconnect from life, and consume themselves. In contrast, when a person feels they are part of a higher meaning that knows everything, controls everything, and encompasses the meaning of everything, they relax. We call this a mental refuge. A mental refuge is a state of reliance (tevekkül) and submission.”

## **“Faith leads to tawhid, tawhid to reliance (tevekkül), and correct reliance (tevekkül) to the happiness of both worlds”**

Tarhan stated that the month of Ramadan should be regarded as an opportunity for purification: “People believe in Allah, but most of the time, they live as if they don’t trust Allah. Unfortunately, the concept of reliance (tevekkül) is not adequately understood today. For example, what happens when you give power of attorney to a lawyer? You must now trust them. If you interfere with their every action, then giving power of attorney loses its meaning. Distrusting a lawyer is also a sign of disrespect. We believe in Allah, but we don't trust Him. Because we do not fulfill the requirements of reliance (tevekkül). If you board a plane and don’t trust the pilot, you cannot sleep. ‘What if they make a mistake or are careless?’ If you constantly doubt, you cannot find peace. If you don't trust the driver, you will be uneasy throughout the journey. You have to trust them because you have accepted their captaincy. If you are going into surgery and don't trust the surgeon, and you constantly try to intervene, then the situation becomes even more difficult. Sometimes we tell our patients, ‘If your profession is engineering, I don't understand engineering, and you don't understand medicine. If you are seeking professional help, please listen to what I say within that framework.’ This sometimes seems like a firm stance, but in reality, transparency builds trust. We believe in Allah, but we do not adequately know His attributes. Yet, as stated in the Quran, Allah is closer to humans than their jugular vein. If we can perform worship as if it were the last day of our lives, as if it were our last prayer, if we can protect the haram-halal sensitivity with our best efforts, if we can evaluate Ramadan as an opportunity for purification, then faith leads us to tawhid (oneness of God). Tawhid leads to reliance (tevekkül), and reliance (tevekkül) leads to submission. Submission, in turn, strengthens reliance (tevekkül) again. When reliance (tevekkül) is achieved, a person attains happiness in both this world and the hereafter. That is, faith leads to tawhid, tawhid to reliance (tevekkül), and correct reliance (tevekkül) to the happiness of both worlds.”

## **“Rules are necessary for trust”**

Tarhan underscored the significant importance of the concept of 'emin' (trustworthiness, security) in Islam: “What is 'tahkiki iman' (verified faith)? It means believing in the oneness of Allah not merely by word, but in a conscious and well-founded manner. Believing in Allah also means believing in the rule-based and wise system in the universe. When is there the rule of law in a country? When power lies in laws and rules, not in individuals. If you don't encounter an unlawful practice when you are at the police station or in court, it means there is a rule-based system. One of the most important concepts introduced by Islam is justice; what we call the doctrine of fairness is this rule-based system understanding. If there is no rule-based environment in a home, a child cannot know what will happen tomorrow, uncertainty arises, and a healthy relationship foundation cannot be established. Therefore, rules are necessary for trust. For faith to transform into trust, one must know Allah’s name Al-Qayyum. Al-Qayyum means that everything subsists through Allah. That is, we are connected with Allah at all times. Our strength and energy are sustained by Him. Absolute knowledge is with Him, absolute will is with Him, absolute wisdom is with Him, absolute power is with Him. These are the exalted attributes also referred to as Ism-i Azam. When a person knows Allah through these attributes, they comprehend the truth, ‘Allah is closer to me than my jugular vein.’ We live knowing that even if we don't see Him, He sees us. When such consciousness is formed, faith turns into trust. If you live according to the rules set by Allah, why would you panic, why would you be afraid? A person who lives lawfully sleeps soundly at night. They do not fear their door being knocked on; they have no lies, deceit, or intrigues. The concept of 'emin' is very important in Islam. The word 'iman' (faith) also comes from the same root. 'Eminlik' (trustworthiness/security) and 'iman'... Meaning to fully believe, trust, and submit to Allah.”

## **“Gratitude and thankfulness strengthen a person’s mental health”**

Tarhan spoke about gratitude and thankfulness modules: “When human ego rises, one begins to think that everyone owes them, that they deserve the best of everything. They question, ‘Why wasn’t it better, why wasn’t there more?’ This leads to a lack of gratitude. For this reason, in positive psychotherapy, we practice a gratitude journal. We tell the person, ‘Every evening, write down three good things you experienced in your life today.’ In the morning, we ask them to note down three blessings they possess. Things that seem simple but are actually very valuable, like ‘My hands and feet work, I have a home, my health is good…’ People often don't notice these. There is also a thankfulness module. We suggest going to someone who has done them a favor in the past and doing a favor for that person. This becomes a kind of assignment. When the person goes and does that favor, the other party is surprised and asks, ‘Why did you do this?’ And the person replies, ‘You did me a favor in the past, and I wanted to do something in return.’ In such situations, a very warm and sincere relationship begins. Gratitude and thankfulness both strengthen a person's mental health and deepen human relationships.”
