Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar stated that not consuming water and food throughout the day during Ramadan can reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth, making teeth more vulnerable, and said, “Saliva is a natural protector for the mouth. It cleans teeth, balances acids, and limits the multiplication of bacteria.” Emphasizing the great importance of regular tooth brushing and flossing, especially after suhoor and iftar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar shared information that avoiding acidic drinks and brushing teeth approximately 30 minutes after eating, instead of immediately, will help protect tooth enamel. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital Periodontology Specialist Asst. Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar made statements about the effects of the changing dietary habits during Ramadan on oral and dental health. **When saliva decreases, tooth surfaces become vulnerable!** Stating that some special conditions that may affect oral and dental health can arise during Ramadan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar said, “The absence of food and water consumption throughout the day can reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth.” Stating that saliva is a natural protector for the mouth, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar said, “It cleans teeth, balances acids, and limits the multiplication of bacteria. When saliva decreases, tooth surfaces become more vulnerable. This situation can facilitate tooth decay, and increase the risk of gum sensitivity and inflammation. Therefore, dry mouth, bad breath, and gum problems can be seen somewhat more frequently during Ramadan. However, it is largely possible to reduce these risks with correct care habits.” **It is important to time oral care correctly! ** Addressing the measures fasting individuals can take to reduce the accumulation of bacteria and tartar that may occur in the mouth throughout the day, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar said: “The most important point is to time oral care correctly. We definitely recommend brushing teeth after suhoor and after iftar. Flossing should also not be neglected. Even if brushing cannot be done during the day, maintaining good oral hygiene at these two main times significantly reduces bacterial accumulation. Additionally, avoiding very sugary and sticky foods during suhoor is a protective measure for the teeth. Sufficient water consumption during iftar and suhoor is also very important for maintaining oral health.” **Acidic drinks should be avoided during iftar and suhoor!** Providing information that stomach acid can increase when fasting for a long time and this acid can also affect the oral environment, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar said, “An acidic environment can weaken tooth enamel.” Listing what can be done to prevent this, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar explained, “During iftar and suhoor, excessively acidic drinks such as carbonated beverages and very sour fruit juices should be avoided. Instead of brushing teeth immediately after eating, rinsing the mouth with water and then brushing approximately 30 minutes later helps protect tooth enamel.” **A healthy oral structure can be maintained with timely oral care and sufficient water consumption!** Noting that bad breath is one of the most frequently complained-about conditions during Ramadan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nihal Bahar said, “This problem is usually due to reduced saliva.” Suggesting that foods with strong odors like onions and garlic should not be consumed excessively during suhoor to reduce bad breath during the day, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar concluded: “Gently cleaning the teeth and especially the tongue after suhoor is very effective. Drinking enough water between iftar and suhoor significantly reduces both dry mouth and bad breath. Sugar-free gums after iftar can be supportive by increasing saliva flow. Protecting oral and dental health during Ramadan is not difficult; just being a little more conscious is enough. With timely oral care, a balanced diet, and sufficient water consumption, a healthy oral structure can be maintained, and the Ramadan period can be spent more comfortably.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66416](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66416) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/protecting-oral-dental-health-in-ramadan-is-not-difficult*
