Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy made evaluations and recommendations regarding individuals with psychiatric illnesses observing fast during Ramadan. ## İçerik As the month of Ramadan approaches, one of the most frequently asked questions by psychiatric patients is, “Can I fast?” Patients wonder about the effects of medications when going without food and water for long periods. Experts state that individuals with severe psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia should not fast for religious reasons, while for conditions like depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, the decision to fast should be made with a psychiatrist, depending on the severity of the illness. Üsküdar University NP Etiler Medical Center Psychiatry Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy made evaluations and recommendations regarding individuals with psychiatric illnesses observing fast during Ramadan. **The severity of the illness is important** Stating that they receive many questions from clients undergoing psychiatric treatment as Ramadan approaches, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy said, “During this period, questions frequently arise from clients regarding their ability to fast, the scheduling of medications, and the effects of medications when going without food and water for extended periods. Whether psychiatric patients can fast or not is related to the severity of the illness, whether it is chronic, and the characteristics of the medications they use. In addition to these factors, attention should also be paid to whether the person has chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, epilepsy, and diabetes.” **Insomnia can increase the severity of the illness** Emphasizing the importance of sleep patterns in many psychiatric illnesses, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy stated, “Sleep patterns are one of the issues that require attention during Ramadan, and prolonged insomnia can lead to an increase in the severity of the illness. Another issue is the problems experienced due to missed medications. In some patients, time changes should be made by the psychiatrist concerned in such a way as not to disrupt the daily dose.” **Attention should be paid to the blood level of medications** Highlighting the importance of sleep patterns in patients with bipolar disorder, as well as the significance of blood levels for mood-stabilizing medications like Lithuril they use, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy said, “Prolonged hunger and thirst can be dangerous as they can affect the blood level of the medication. For individuals with bipolar disorder, it is necessary to be more sensitive regarding fasting and for the psychiatrist to make the necessary individualized adjustments and decisions regarding fasting.” **The decision to fast should be made with a psychiatrist** Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Erensoy concluded his words by stating, “In general, those experiencing psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and those with illnesses that severely impair mental balance are not required to fast for religious reasons.” He added: “Most of these patients use high doses of medication. For those with mild illness, a decision to fast can be made under the supervision of a psychiatrist. In conditions such as depression, anxiety and worry disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, the decision to fast should be made with a psychiatrist, according to the severity of the illness. For some of these patients, medication times can be adjusted, and there is no impediment to fasting. Generally, regarding fasting, it is necessary to consider the person's physical and mental condition and make a decision in consultation with a psychiatrist.” --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/psychiatric-patients-ask-this-question-the-most*
