How did the earthquake in Izmir, which resulted in the death of 91 people and the injury of 1004, affect our psychology? Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drawing attention to the importance of psychological and mental preparation for earthquakes, stated that along with physical measures against natural disasters like earthquakes, it is also necessary to be psychologically and mentally prepared. Tarhan emphasized that children are greatly affected by all natural disasters, especially earthquakes, and that it is crucial to make children feel that everything is under control.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made important evaluations on the psychological effects of the earthquake disaster that occurred in Izmir on Friday, October 30, causing the death and injury of many of our citizens.

**“Stress must be controlled during an earthquake” **

Stating that the stress experienced during an earthquake is normal but should be controlled, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan warned, "In such situations, not having stress would be abnormal. We say there is stress, but no panic. There will certainly be stress, but it needs to be controlled. Controllable stress protects a person from harm and danger, helps them do things more healthily, and facilitates decision-making, but uncontrollable stress leads to excessive reactions."

**“There must be a crisis plan for psychological resilience”**

Emphasizing the importance of psychological resilience, Tarhan stated that a crisis plan must be made for this, saying: "People without psychological resilience experience stress uncontrollably and in a panic. Psychological resilience is not innate; it is acquired and learned later. An earthquake is a crisis, and to have psychological resilience against an earthquake, there must be a crisis plan. While sitting at home, questions such as 'What should I do if an earthquake occurs here?', 'How should I protect my children if an earthquake occurs?', 'If an earthquake occurs, I need to prepare the most suitable place for myself,' 'Do I need an earthquake kit or not?' should be asked. If a person does these things, they will not panic because they are prepared for the earthquake. They can exhibit their behaviors more healthily and automatically. This applies to all crises. The basic principle of crisis intervention is to be prepared in advance. If a person mentally prepares themselves for disaster, earthquake, natural disaster, and other events, they build psychological resilience. When that event comes before them, they do not react disproportionately."

**“Children observe adults”**

Stating that fear of an earthquake is an expected behavior, but the reactions after the fear are the individual's choice, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, "An earthquake is always an option before us. In such situations, after the first major earthquake, aftershocks are also likely to occur. In such cases, a person needs to think about what they would do if there were a new earthquake to be mentally prepared. Children's fears related to earthquakes in such situations can be much more devastating compared to adults. It is very difficult to mentally prepare children under the age of 10 because their sense of reality is not sufficiently developed and their life experiences are inadequate. Therefore, they look to the demeanor and behavior of adults during an earthquake. Adults may say 'be calm' in such situations, but if their body language doesn't say 'be calm,' the parents' words become meaningless. If parents want to protect their children from an earthquake, they must first manage their own stress. It is essential for them to remain calm and composed without panicking and to give their children the feeling that everything is under control."

**“Do not send children away from you”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that it is natural for preschool or 5-6-year-old children to feel fear and that they can learn how to react to that fear later. He said, "For them to learn this, the child's own internal knowledge and life experiences are not enough. At that moment, they will immediately look at their parents and their surroundings. Old approaches were like this: 'If there's an earthquake somewhere, quickly get the children away.' Such behavior is the greatest harm that can be done to children because it can chronicize trauma. A child only feels safe when they are with their parents or trusted individuals. When a child is separated from trusted individuals, their fear, which was 1 or 2, increases to 3 because they will also wonder what happened to their mother and father. Therefore, instead of moving children away from the earthquake site, a safe area needs to be created with the mother and father."

** ****“Developing a sense of control is a skill” **

Reminding that Turkey is in an earthquake zone, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, "When an earthquake occurs in different cities, individuals should be physically and psychologically prepared for an earthquake in their own location as well. If no precautions are taken in such a situation, one needs to think about it. When approaching a child, it is necessary to highlight the child's sense of control by saying, 'Look, there was an earthquake here, but it's quite expected to feel fear; we have taken our precautions regarding the earthquake, so we will activate the sense of control.' There are situations that a person can control and situations they cannot. Individuals decide where control begins and ends with their minds in such situations."

**“Psychological preparation is as important as physical preparation for an earthquake”**

Tarhan continued by stating that with the support of parents, a sense of control should be developed in children: "If we emphasize for children, parents first need to calm themselves down to calm their child. If the parents are panicking at those moments, the child's fear increases fivefold. Parents need to believe themselves that they are not afraid in such situations. If they say 'don't be afraid' but can't sleep at night or panic and run away from a small tremor, the children's fear will increase even more, and children will feel the greatest harm. Managing these emotions is a skill. We need to know what to do when we encounter unexpected, unforeseeable situations. Such natural disasters are an opportunity to teach children about some unavoidable aspects of life, enabling them to cope with them and manage stress. It is not enough to be only physically prepared for an earthquake. We also need to be psychologically and mentally prepared for an earthquake."

**“Crying and being able to express emotions is important”**

Underlining that those with relatives under the rubble should be psychologically supported and made to feel that they are not alone, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, "In such situations, when they receive support, they feel that something is being done for their loved ones and they relax. People usually later blame themselves in natural disasters, thinking, 'Was there something I could have done that I didn't?' Then, following feelings of guilt, regret, and hatred, they feel guilty by questioning what they and their loved ones couldn't do. In traumatic natural events, there are 4 stages of reaction. The first reaction is protest and denial. Then, seeing that the event is real, the process of acceptance begins. They question why such a thing happened and why it happened to them. Now, in such situations, a bargaining process begins for the individual. There is a bargaining process like 'Let my child be saved, then I'll do this,' or 'Let them get out from under the rubble, then I'll do that.' Some overcome this process in a few hours, some in a few days. This varies according to the person's psychological resilience structure."

**“Earthquake victims should be made to feel they are not alone”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan continued to psychologically define the behaviors exhibited by individuals after an earthquake, along with their emotional states: "In such situations, those whose relatives are under the rubble should be made to feel that they are not alone. People's basic needs must be met at that moment. Some people have such reactions related to earthquake events that it is called cognitive blindness. They have experienced such a shock, such stress, that their brain, unable to withstand the pain, has desensitized and shut itself down. Involuntary behaviors emerge, such as staring blankly at the surroundings and even forgetting to eat and drink, as they feel nothing. It is important not to misunderstand their careless, blank staring. The person is blocking their brain because they experienced the shock most intensely. If a person expresses their emotions, cries, and reacts, this is a good thing. Let's not prevent the individual from expressing this reaction; giving medication in the acute phase is not appropriate. Instead of giving medication, it is important to make them feel that they are not alone."
