## Özet
Experts state that psychological resilience during cancer treatment not only affects mental health but is also an important issue for the immune system.
## İçerik
Making statements on February 4, World Cancer Day, Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol said, “Exposure to chronic stress suppresses immunity. A strong psychological stance, on the other hand, can contribute to the balancing of stress hormones and, in some cases, to slowing down the progression rate of the disease.” Emphasizing that psychological support facilitates coping with uncertainty, anxiety, and physical challenges, Erol stated that cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and gratitude practices help patients maintain their hope and attachment to life. Erol also pointed out that increasing psychological resilience with personalized support plans positively contributes to the treatment process.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol provided information about the effect of psychological resilience on cancer patients' treatment and recovery processes on February 4, World Cancer Day.
**Psychological resilience can directly affect the immune system!**
Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that the concept of 'resilience', also known as psychological resilience, is the capacity of a person to adapt, recover, and even emerge stronger from difficulties in interpersonal relationships, traumatic processes, and stressful life events, and said, “The importance of psychological support is immense in a process as challenging as cancer treatment, both physically and psychologically.”
Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that when psychological resilience is considered in terms of the cancer process, it is known to help maintain mental balance despite the uncertainty that begins from the moment of diagnosis, physical and mental challenges during treatment, anxieties about the future, and possible changes in quality of life. She added, “Research shows that psychological resilience can directly affect the immune system. Chronic exposure to stress and feeling depressed can suppress the immune system, reducing the body's resistance to infections and diseases. In contrast, a strong psychological stance can contribute to the balancing of stress hormones, reducing inflammation levels, and even, in some cases, slowing down the progression rate of the disease.”
**How previous difficulties were overcome should be remembered!**
Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol pointed out that one of the positive effects of psychological resilience on cancer patients' treatment process is to contribute to maintaining their hopes for the future by increasing their attachment to life, and said, “Engaging in activities that give meaning to life and strengthening social ties increase the patient's adherence to treatment. This enables them to cope better with side effects that may arise during the treatment process.”
Referring to the many different methods that can be applied to increase psychological resilience, Erol continued her words as follows:
“The most commonly used approach in psychotherapies is cognitive behavioral therapy. This method aims to address the negative beliefs observed in the person during the process with a realistic perspective. For example, a person who receives a diagnosis might fall into the thought, ‘I have been diagnosed, the rest of my life is completely ruined.’ They should try to gain a realistic perspective on this thought and be able to think, ‘Yes, I am going through a difficult process, but there are still beautiful things continuing in my life.’ The person should remember how they coped with previous difficulties; reframing such as ‘I have experienced difficult times before and I overcame them’ forms the basis of cognitive interventions.”
**Gratitude helps reduce depression and anxiety!**
Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can help patients reduce anxiety, better manage emotional fluctuations, and increase mental resilience, and said, “Creating daily gratitude lists, focusing on small joys, and noticing positive moments increases psychological resilience. Research shows that gratitude helps reduce depression and anxiety.”
**Increasing psychological resilience supports not only mental well-being but also physical recovery!**
Expert Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol emphasized that establishing a social support system with family, friends, and support groups will prevent patients from feeling alone and increase emotional resilience, and said, “Communicating with group therapies or communities specific to cancer patients can help patients share their experiences and strengthen themselves.”
Erol also stated that art and music therapy are used to increase psychological resilience and concluded her words as follows:
“Activities such as painting, writing, and playing instruments without aesthetic concern create a safe space for patients to express their emotions.
Increasing psychological resilience in cancer patients is an important factor that supports not only mental well-being but also physical recovery. Techniques and approaches that can be used for psychological well-being can help patients be more resilient during this challenging process. Since each individual's needs are different, psychological support plans should be prepared personally and be compatible with the methods the patient feels best with.”
