## **Dr. Lecturer Nebiye Yaşar: “We aim to contribute to society by popularizing the culture of volunteering”**

The first welcoming speech of the opening program was delivered by Dr. Lecturer Nebiye Yaşar, Director of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Young Brains Academy Application and Research Center and Social Contribution Coordinator. Yaşar said; “Today, we are launching a very valuable project. Mark Leibniz’s saying, ‘He who guides youth to good, guides humanity to good,’ summarizes this project in the best possible way. In this work, which focuses on protecting life, under the leadership of our professor, we have developed four social innovation projects: YaşamKor, GüvenKor, RehaKor, and AileKor. This model offers an example of sustainable, innovative, and effective cooperation. Prof. Nevzat's ideas form the basis of these projects and offer solutions in many areas, especially in the fight against addiction. As our professor said, ‘We must give new answers to old questions.’ With these projects, we aim to contribute to society by popularizing the culture of volunteering together with young people.”

## **İskender Yönden: “I wish the project to be auspicious”**

Yönden said; “Although we are not directly involved in this project, I thank our Professor Nevzat for his great support to the Gaziosmanpaşa District Governorship and for his contributions to all the projects we have carried out so far. This year is the Year of the Family, and the White House project, which we have been running for about 7 years, also holds an important place in this context. I want to address my Ümraniye District Governor, you are truly very lucky; working with our Professor Nevzat is a great privilege. I believe it is also an important opportunity for young people. On this occasion, I thank our Professor and wish the project to be auspicious for our Ministry of Interior, our Ümraniye District Governorship, and our university.”

## **Yüksel Çelik: “Addiction is one of the most important problems of our time”**

Another name who delivered a speech within the scope of the protocol speeches was Ümraniye District Governor Yüksel Çelik. Çelik said; “I am very pleased to be in such a meaningful program. Addiction is one of the most important problems of our time and one of the most frequently encountered issues in our duties. We see these problems in many areas on the field, such as substance, alcohol, gambling, and technology addiction, and we seek solutions. Therefore, I find this project, carried out under the consultancy of Turkey's highly esteemed professor, very valuable. Ümraniye is a large district with a population of 750,000 and 125,000 students. We encounter serious problems affecting the entire society, along with students. I believe that with its prevention and early intervention-focused approach, this project will bring our youth into life without turning to addiction, and I wish it to be beneficial for our region and our country.”

## **Dr. Lecturer Aslı Zeynep Başabak Bhais: “Our main goal is to increase the emotional resilience of young people”**

Within the scope of the opening program, Project Coordinator, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dr. Lecturer Aslı Zeynep Başabak Bhais presented the YAŞAMKOR project. Başabak stated; “The main goal of our project is to increase the emotional resilience and psychological robustness of young people. Because addiction is a disease that affects not only the individual but also their family and society. For this reason, we include families and educators in the process, as well as young people. The project has three main target groups: young people aged 10-14, their guidance counselors, and their families. Within the six-month program, 60 young people will participate in eight-session structured trainings prepared by an expert team. A special four-session program covering topics such as addiction, adolescence, and early intervention has been prepared for guidance counselors. Additionally, informational activities will be carried out for families on emotion management, communication skills, conflict resolution, and developing healthy habits. With this comprehensive project, our aim is to support independent living and build a strong future.”

Following the opening speeches, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan gave a talk titled “Psychological Resilience”. The interactive interview was moderated by Journalist Şaban Özdemir.

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “This project is about sowing seeds in the developing souls of young people”**

Tarhan, congratulating everyone who contributed to the realization of the project, said; “This project is about sowing seeds in the developing souls of young people.”

## **“With the ‘Psychological Resilience Vaccine,’ young people will be resistant to evil”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, addressing the issue of psychological resilience in detail, started his words by saying; “An individual with psychological resilience can stay away from addiction, does not use substances, can say ‘no,’ and can develop safe behaviors. Our aim is to empower young people in this regard. What we are actually doing is giving them a kind of psychological resilience vaccine. Young people who receive this vaccine will be resistant to evil, will be able to say ‘no,’ and will be able to guide those on the wrong path towards the right one. We also find the definition of psychological resilience in the World Health Organization’s 1984 definition of health. The World Health Organization defined human health as a state of bio, psycho, social, and spiritual well-being. Previously, the spiritual dimension was not in this definition; it was only considered bio, psycho, and social health. However, after 1984, the spiritual dimension was added. The word 'spiritual' here refers to questioning the meaning of life and existence. To be a person who can choose good, right, and beautiful goals. Because if this direction is not given, humans can be benevolent or malevolent. Psychological resilience has fundamental dimensions. The first is emotional resilience. The second is semantic resilience, meaning having the right meaning and goals. The third is the richness of social bonds. And the fourth is being able to be happy with small things.”

## **“To have psychological resilience, it is necessary to establish deep, high-quality, and meaningful relationships”**

Tarhan, explaining what is necessary to have psychological resilience, said; “The first condition of psychological resilience is a strong and positive emotional state. The second dimension is a person's dedication to a task, their engagement. For example, you start a task, hours pass, and you say, ‘I didn't realize how time flew.’ This is a very important step for psychological resilience. If you have an occupation where you don't notice time passing, it becomes a strong resource for you. Because a person has a job and also an occupation. Occupations are activities that satisfy a person and allow them to transcend themselves. The third dimension is being able to establish healthy relationships. However, here we are talking about deep and meaningful relationships, not superficial ones. Today, people can have hundreds, thousands of followers, but these relationships are often superficial. For psychological resilience, it is necessary to establish deep, high-quality, and meaningful relationships. The fourth dimension is being able to be part of a higher meaning and purpose. A person must commit to a purpose that transcends themselves. Finally, it is being able to achieve successes, regardless of whether they are small or large. These are the indispensable elements of psychological resilience.”

## **“The capitalist system turns desire into need”**

Tarhan, stating that the balance between desire and need must be well established, said; “Modernism and the capitalist system constantly send us the message, ‘You must achieve more, if not, try again.’ However, a person should have a higher goal. In the introduction to economics textbooks, economics is defined as ‘the science of developing human's limited resources for their unlimited needs.’ So, we have limited resources, but it is assumed that we have unlimited needs. In reality, a person does not have unlimited needs, but unlimited desires. The capitalist system, however, has not separated desire from need; it presents desire as if it were a need. What happens in this situation? A person wants to buy something they like when they see it in a display. A young girl reading fashion magazines can also fall into depression for this reason. Because the capitalist system turns desire into need, and this harms mental health. Learning the balance between desire and need is very important for psychological resilience. A person should ask themselves, ‘Do I really need this, or do I just want it?’ A person who can make this distinction also succeeds in being happy with small things.”

## **Has an even stronger influence on young people than family…**

Tarhan also answered questions from the participants, drawing attention to the great importance of social media literacy. Tarhan said; “The 0–3 age and 10–13 age periods are critical periods when synapses in the brain develop intensely and are pruned by external stimuli. Indeed, artificial intelligence studies have been inspired by the development pattern of these neural networks. Therefore, childhood and the family environment are extremely important. When a child begins to become independent, they enter adolescence. Adolescence is also known as the gang age. Adolescents take great pleasure in belonging to a group, in being a member of a group. At this point, good friends are very important. If a child forms good relationships, they will be most influenced by their friends after their parents. The second important factor here is education. Especially the primary school period plays a critical role in the child's personality development. Primary school teachers are very important role models for children. However, today there is a factor that surpasses all of these: social media. Social media can have an even stronger influence on young people than family. Smartphones are like an open door to the house. Even if we provide a safe environment for our child at home, they can easily reach the most unsafe areas through the phone. For this reason, media and social media literacy are of great importance. In the modules we have prepared, we aim to teach social media literacy to children.”

## **“It has become difficult to find people who are consistent internally and externally”**

Tarhan, emphasizing the need to implement the categorical thinking method, said; “A person capable of emotion regulation can manage negative emotions even if they experience them. For example, a therapist might have to move on to a second patient after listening to a patient's story. What needs to be done here is the categorical thinking method. The person puts the previous topic or their home problem on a mental shelf and directs their attention to the new patient, saying, ‘I’ll think about this tonight.’ In this way, they can focus their attention and emotions together on the current topic. This is not an insincere situation because when a person postpones one topic, they are not disregarding the other. At this point, categorical and strategic thinking come into play. The person makes a plan in their mind and solves the problem when the time comes. Thus, when they focus their emotion and attention, they find a solution. This resolved situation is reflected in the person's facial expressions, body language, and narrative. Open, transparent, and accountable relationships foster sincerity. Sincerity, in turn, activates our mirror neurons in the brain, increasing trust and creating a sense of trust in the other party. One of the things we have lost most in today's world is sincerity. People are playing roles, wearing masks; their inside is different from their outside. It has truly become difficult to find people who are consistent internally and externally. One of the reasons for this is that we live in an era of speed and pleasure. This era has changed our priorities.”

## **“The most important strength in a crisis is to be prepared for it”**

Tarhan, emphasizing the need for a crisis security plan, concluded his words by saying; “The most important strength in a crisis is to be prepared for it. In our culture, we usually try to manage a crisis after it has occurred. However, the first condition of crisis management is to have a crisis security plan. For example, a suicide safety plan is made for a person at risk of suicide. This plan determines what the person will do to prevent suicide during a crisis and how parents should act. Similarly, a security plan should be prepared for every crisis. For instance, we might be successful in extinguishing a fire when it breaks out. However, we fall short in taking the necessary precautions to prevent fires or investing mentally in this regard. For this reason, we are constantly dealing with crises, and the problem is growing. A person who is prepared for a crisis does not panic during the crisis. Instead of asking, ‘What will I do now?’ they apply what they have learned step by step.”
