## Özet

Experts state that psychosis distorts a person's perception of reality, saying it is a serious mental health problem affecting thoughts, reasoning, and behaviors.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that psychosis is a broad definition covering many diseases such as schizophrenia and similar conditions, said, 'Certain specific conditions can lead to different psychosis developments. Genetics, illicit drugs and stimulants, traumas, brain injuries affecting the brain, brain tumors, strokes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and HIV can cause psychosis.' Beyaz noted that psychosis generally appears at a young age and the initial symptoms gradually develop over the years, emphasizing that early diagnosis and treatment play a critical role in reducing the negative effects the disease can cause.

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about the symptoms, causes, risk factors, and treatment methods of psychosis.

**Psychosis disconnects the person from reality!**

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that psychosis is the name given to a group of diseases where thought, reasoning, speech, and behavior problems can be observed, disconnecting the person from reality and the outside world, and said, 'A person's thoughts, way of perceiving the world and reality, emotions, and behaviors are affected by this disease.'

Beyaz noted that psychosis is a very broad definition and encompasses many psychiatric diseases, and said, 'Delusional disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder are some of the diseases included in the class of psychotic disorders. Although a significant portion of psychotic disorders consists of schizophrenia patients, not every person diagnosed with a psychotic disorder has schizophrenia.'

**There are some different diseases and risk factors that can lead to psychosis! **

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that all psychosis cases are different, said, 'Therefore, the causative factor is not always exactly clear. However, there are some different diseases that can lead to psychosis.'

Beyaz, emphasizing that triggers such as drug addiction, insomnia, and other environmental factors are also effective, continued as follows:

'In addition, certain specific conditions can lead to different psychosis developments. Doctors do not yet know exactly what causes psychosis. However, there are some known risk factors. The first is genetic; you may have psychosis-related genes, but this does not always mean you will develop psychosis. Triggers can be certain prescription medications and substances like alcohol, cannabis, LSD, and amphetamines. The death of a loved one, sexual assault, or war can lead to psychosis. The type of trauma and the age at which it occurred also play a role in the development of psychosis. Traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, strokes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and HIV can cause psychosis.'

**Psychosis has no typical onset! **

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, pointing out that psychosis has no typical onset, said, 'While some start acutely, in a highly inflamed manner, others may manifest with a more insidious and mild onset.'

However, Beyaz stated that whether it starts acutely and intensely or with duller and milder symptoms, people generally experience some faint, signal-like symptoms in the years preceding their first attacks, and explained, 'Social isolation, a decline in academic performance, reduced speech, and a lack of interest in activities, which they generally show gradually, can be counted among these symptoms. Because these symptoms manifest gradually over the years, families or those around the child may not easily notice the changes. Mostly, families feel the need to consult a specialist during the first attack, when more noticeable changes are observed.'

**1 to 2 out of every 100 people experience psychosis once in their lifetime! **

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, noting that it is unknown why this disorder, mostly seen in young people, particularly occurs in individuals at a young age, said, '1 to 2 out of every 100 people experience psychosis once in their lifetime. This disease first appears mostly between the ages of 12 and 29. It is observed at the same rate in men and women.'

**Beyaz, sharing the information that psychosis is not seen in every type of depression, stated the following:**

'However, this situation can occur in depression with psychotic features, and psychotic features accompany the depressive picture. These psychotic symptoms are delusions and hallucinations. These psychotic symptoms are often consistent with a depressive theme. That is, there may be delusions of guilt, inadequacy, sinfulness, deserving punishment, that disasters will befall oneself or others due to one's faults, or of rotting and perishing. Voices that demean, insult, or slander the person may be heard. Olfactory hallucinations, such as foul odors related to rotting, may occur. It can lead to a significant loss of functionality.'

**Starting treatment early reduces problems associated with psychotic disorder!**

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that treatment should be started without delay after the first psychosis attack, said, 'Early administered treatment can help prevent negative situations that may occur in relationships and daily life.'

Beyaz also stated that starting treatment early can help minimize problems that may arise due to psychotic disorder, and used the expressions, 'The path the specialist will follow for treatment is determined according to the person's condition. The specialist physician may prescribe antipsychotic medications in pill, liquid, or injectable form to reduce symptoms. Furthermore, avoiding illicit drug and alcohol use is among the options the specialist may recommend.'

Medication therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are important for symptom control in psychosis!

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, pointing out that hospitalization may be necessary if the person poses a risk of harm to themselves or others and cannot control their behavior, concluded his words as follows:

'The first of the treatment methods implemented in psychosis is medication therapy. With medications called antipsychotics, the discomfort of individuals experiencing the symptoms of the disease can be kept under control. These medications help reduce hallucinations and delusions, making the individual's mind clearer. These medications are recommended according to the symptoms of the discomfort.

The other method is cognitive behavioral therapy. The patient needs to remain in regular contact with their health counselor. This situation positively reflects on the process of changing the person's thought patterns and actions. This type of approach can lead to lasting changes in individuals, and it has been observed that people manage the disease better. It has also been observed that this treatment method is beneficial for many psychosis symptoms that do not respond to medication therapy.'
