## İçerik

While everyday forgetfulness does not always indicate a serious illness, some symptoms can be harbingers of dementia.

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini emphasized that completely forgetting recent events, repeatedly asking the same questions at short intervals, and being unable to perform daily tasks independently should be taken into consideration, stating, “The slowing down of recall speed with advancing age is a natural process. However, behaviors such as putting the iron in the refrigerator are not signs of old age, but a clear indication of illness, and absolutely require a neurological evaluation.” Dr. Şalçini pointed out that chronic stress and insomnia can also make it difficult to record new information into memory, and stated that the fundamental difference between brain fog and dementia is whether the forgotten information can be recalled again with a hint.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini made statements about the difference between daily forgetfulness and dementia symptoms, the effects of stress and insomnia on memory, and in which situations a neurological evaluation is necessary.

**Inability to remember the recent past can be a symptom of serious memory problems!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that forgetting where keys were placed, checking if the stove was left open, or momentarily forgetting someone's name in daily life is usually the result of fatigue and lack of attention, but added, “However, alarm bells ring in situations such as completely forgetting a conversation that just took place as if it never happened, repeatedly asking the same question within a short period, or being unable to find the way home that has been known by heart for years.”

Dr. Şalçini warned that when the issue reaches the dimension of ‘not being able to record the recent past in the mind at all,’ rather than ‘not being able to find an item’s place,’ one should consult a specialist without delay.

**Putting the iron in the refrigerator is not a sign of old age, but a clear indication of illness!**

Dr. Şalçini pointed out that remembering names a little later or needing a little more time than before when learning something new as one gets older is a natural process, and continued:

“However, dismissing the situation by saying ‘I’m old, that’s why I forget’ eliminates the chance of early diagnosis and treatment of an underlying serious illness. If forgetfulness prevents a person from paying their bills, cooking their meals, using the stove, or maintaining their personal hygiene independently, this is definitely not a natural part of aging. Furthermore, behaviors such as placing objects in very irrelevant places (for example, putting the iron in the refrigerator) are not signs of old age, but a clear indication of illness and absolutely require a neurological evaluation.”

**Stress and insomnia make it difficult for the brain to record new information! **

Stating that stress and insomnia impair memory, Dr. Şalçini said, “Stress and insomnia are among the biggest enemies of the brain.”

Dr. Şalçini explained that the cortisol hormone secreted by the body under chronic stress practically suppresses the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain, and prevents new information from being recorded, adding, “Similarly, while we sleep, our brain sorts, stores, and practically cleanses itself of the information from the day. When adequate and quality sleep is not obtained, this nightly cleaning cannot be performed; as a result, the mind slows down like a computer with open tabs and full memory, struggling to find even the simplest words.”

**The difference between brain fog and dementia is whether the information can be recalled!**

Referring to the difference between brain fog and real memory loss (dementia), Dr. Celal Şalçini said, “The easiest way to distinguish is to see if the information returns.”

Dr. Şalçini concluded his words by saying, “While experiencing brain fog, the mind is cloudy, unable to focus; however, when a hint is given or after some time passes, the sought-after information is recalled.”

“In real memory loss diseases like Alzheimer’s, that information is completely erased from the brain. For example; someone experiencing brain fog struggles to find where they put their glasses but remembers the moment they put them there when found. An Alzheimer’s patient, even if they find the glasses, may deny they belong to them or have no idea how they got there.”
