Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Lecturer Melek Gözde Luş from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements within the scope of February 18 World Asperger Day. **Asperger is not a behavioral problem; it's a neurodevelopmental disorder!** Dr. Lecturer Melek Gözde Luş stated that individuals with Asperger syndrome are observed to have average or above-average language and intelligence abilities. She said, “Unlike most autistic individuals, they are eager for human relationships but mostly want to form relationships based on their own interests. They have good verbal skills and a significant accumulation of knowledge, especially in their areas of interest, but difficulties are observed in understanding even simple implied remarks or in basic conversations required for fundamental social norms.” Referring to common misconceptions about Asperger syndrome in society, Dr. Lecturer Luş said, “The beliefs that individuals with Asperger syndrome are emotionally cold and indifferent, completely lacking social skills, and that everyone with Asperger syndrome has all the symptoms of autism are common misconceptions. The belief that Asperger syndrome is a simple behavioral disorder is also one of the common mistakes. Asperger syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes some difficulties in social, emotional, and behavioral aspects.” **Quality of life significantly increases with early diagnosis, proper support, and education!** Dr. Lecturer Melek Gözde Luş stated that Asperger syndrome begins from early life, saying, “When families observe significant symptoms in their children from an early age, such as awkwardness in social interactions like not behaving appropriately or not being able to respond adequately to conversation; inability to understand social messages like facial expressions and body language; and difficulty understanding humor and sarcasm in speech, or gestures and social cues important for normal conversation, they should definitely consult a child and adolescent psychiatrist.” Emphasizing that showing excessive and intense interest in a single topic and repeatedly returning to a topic of interest are also important indicators, Dr. Lecturer Luş said, “Early diagnosis is crucial because it provides the opportunity for timely intervention to develop various strategies and support mechanisms to improve individuals' quality of life. Understanding individuals' strengths, developing appropriate approaches to their difficulties, and guiding individuals to the right educational programs they need at an early age significantly increase the quality of life in later years.” **Treatment for Asperger: Personalized support to improve quality of life!** Dr. Lecturer Melek Gözde Luş stated that social relationships are the most challenging area for individuals with Asperger syndrome, saying, “They can have considerable difficulty in reading social cues, empathizing, and maintaining reciprocal conversations. This situation can lead to loneliness and social isolation for the individual.” Dr. Lecturer Luş noted that treatment for Asperger syndrome includes supportive therapies aimed at improving the individual's quality of life rather than 'curing' the condition. She stated, “The treatment plan should be ‘personalized,’ considering both weaknesses and strengths. The management of difficulties can be targeted with methods such as Social Skills Training, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), behavioral supports, special education interventions, and parent education and guidance.” **Employer awareness and flexible arrangements facilitate integration into professional life! ** Providing information about the support needed by adult individuals with Asperger in their professional lives, Dr. Lecturer Melek Gözde Luş concluded her words as follows: “Situations requiring social skills, such as teamwork in the workplace, can be challenging. Employer awareness, flexible work arrangements, and mentorship programs, facilitate the integration of these individuals into professional life. Difficulties in social interaction can lead to misunderstandings in the workplace. These individuals often have a high level of interest in a particular topic and may spend an excessive amount of time learning about it, which can hinder their ability to focus on a task or perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Developing clear and direct communication strategies in the workplace is beneficial.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66377](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66377) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/right-support-changes-lives-in-asperger-syndrome*
