Experts state that root canal treatment aims to preserve an infected tooth in a healthy condition in the mouth without extraction, thus making it an important treatment method.

## İçerik

Endodontist Dr. Lecturer Vahide Hazal Abat, stating that the tooth is anesthetized and the nerve tissue is cleaned during the treatment process, said, “The root canal spaces are thoroughly disinfected. The canals are filled with biocompatible filling materials all the way to the root apex.” Dr. Lecturer Abat noted that while pain and sensitivity are considered normal in the first few days after treatment, a dentist should be consulted for intensifying or persistent complaints, and stated that in some cases, the infection might recur, necessitating a retreatment of the root canal or surgical interventions.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital Endodontist Dr. Lecturer Vahide Hazal Abat provided information about how root canal treatment is applied, normal and risky situations after treatment, and in which cases retreatment or surgical intervention might be necessary.

**Root canal treatment aims to save an infected tooth!**

Dr. Lecturer Vahide Hazal Abat reminded that root canal treatment is a method applied to eliminate infections occurring in the internal tissues of the tooth and to preserve the tooth in a healthy condition in the mouth, stating, “Before starting the treatment process, the relevant tooth is anesthetized with local anesthesia.”

Dr. Lecturer Abat stated that subsequently, the cavity (the stage where tooth decay becomes visible) is opened, and the nerve tissue inside the tooth is removed, adding, “The root canal spaces are thoroughly disinfected and shaped using special materials. After these procedures, the canals are filled with biocompatible filling materials up to the root apex. Following the completion of root canal treatment, restorative procedures such as fillings or crowns are applied to increase the tooth's function and durability.”

**A dentist should be consulted in unexpected situations after treatment! **

Dr. Lecturer Vahide Hazal Abat pointed out that it is quite normal to experience complaints such as pain or sensitivity during chewing, especially in the first few days after root canal treatment, stating, “These symptoms are expected to decrease and disappear over time.”

Dr. Lecturer Abat warned that if the pain does not subside, gradually increases, reaches a severity that wakes one up at night, or if symptoms of swelling, abscess, or inflammation appear on the face, a dentist should be consulted without delay.

**The complex canal structure of teeth can make root canal treatment difficult! **

Dr. Lecturer Vahide Hazal Abat noted that each tooth having its unique morphological and anatomical structure can lead to the root canal system being quite complex in some cases, stating, “Due to this complex structure, it might not be possible to adequately reach all parts of the canals.”

Dr. Lecturer Abat noted that in such cases, infection can develop due to bacteria remaining in the canal or bacteria multiplying again, and root canal treatment might need to be repeated, concluding his words as follows:

“In cases where root canal retreatment is not possible, surgical interventions such as apicoectomy come into play. In situations where neither root canal retreatment nor surgical intervention is possible, tooth extraction may be considered as a last resort.

In case of complaints arising after root canal treatment, self-medication by the patient can be harmful. Especially the use of antibiotics should always be under the control and recommendation of a physician. Otherwise, both the treatment process can be adversely affected, and unnecessary drug use can lead to various health problems.”
