Pointing to the reasons why children may not want to go to school, Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi emphasizes that situations such as starting a new school, changes in class or teachers, academic difficulties, exams, and problems in social relationships can trigger school anxiety in children. Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi pointed out that school is not just a place for education for children, but also an environment where social skills are developed and friendships are formed. İnci Nur Ülkü stated that for some children, school can become a source of anxiety, and continued as follows: “School anxiety is a condition where a child experiences excessive worry and fear about going to school. This anxiety can stem from thoughts that the child will fail at school, be rejected, or encounter a negative situation. School anxiety can arise from many different reasons. Especially situations such as starting a new school, changes in class or teachers, academic difficulties, exams, and problems in social relationships can trigger anxiety in children.” School anxiety can also manifest with physical symptoms Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü drew attention to the fact that school anxiety in children can cause different symptoms and listed these symptoms as follows: - Your child having physical complaints related to going to school such as stomach ache, headache, nausea, shortness of breath, - Your child feeling anxious and tense, irritable, unhappy, - Expressing negative feelings about school and stating that they do not want to go to school, - Your child cutting off relationships with friends at school, - Experiencing temper tantrums - Avoiding certain activities or situations at school Lack of understanding and communication problems within the family can lead to a desire not to go to school Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü listed the underlying reasons for children's unwillingness to go to school as follows: - Especially children in preschool and primary school age may feel anxiety about being separated from their parents. - School is important for making new friends and social interaction. However, some children may avoid going to school due to reasons such as lack of self-confidence, shyness, or bullying. - Students experiencing learning difficulties may not want to go to school due to fear of not being able to keep up with others in class. - Family problems can affect children's desire to go to school. Lack of understanding, communication problems, or separation within the family can cause a child to develop a negative attitude towards school. - Intensive lessons, boring course content, or an overly competitive school environment can lead students to not want to go to school. A regular daily routine can alleviate children's anxiety Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, offering advice to families on understanding and helping with children's school anxiety, emphasized that an open and understanding communication with the child should be established first. Ülkü said, “Encourage them to share their feelings and concerns about going to school. Closely observe your child's physical and emotional state. Listen carefully to your child's reactions and expressions when talking about school. Observe their relationships with friends and peers. Create a supportive environment to help them cope with anxiety. Establishing a regular daily routine for children experiencing school anxiety can alleviate their worries.” Stating that waking up early in the mornings will allow the child to get ready comfortably, Ülkü suggested, “Activities such as getting dressed and preparing bags make your child feel responsible. Set a homework time after school. You can review your child's homework together. Allow your child to spend time on activities they are interested in after school. Reassure your child by starting with small steps instead of taking big steps regarding going to school. For example, you can plan the school-going process step-by-step. If you think the support you provide for coping with school anxiety is not sufficient, do not hesitate to ask for help. You can get help from the school's guidance and psychological counseling unit or a specialist psychologist.” Students should be able to tell their teachers about their anxieties Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü also emphasized that teachers can understand the school anxiety a child is experiencing as they observe children in the classroom. She concluded by saying, “Understanding that every student is different, it is important to communicate one-on-one with students and provide support tailored to their needs. You can talk to students you suspect are experiencing school anxiety about their worries. Your students should know that they can reach you when needed and that you can provide them with the necessary support. Offering activities and projects they will enjoy can increase their interest in school. Organizing activities that strengthen relationships among friends can enable your students to support each other.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.41954](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.41954) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/school-anxiety-causes-nausea*
