## Özet

Experts state that teeth clenching and grinding can also be observed in children, and say that it can negatively affect not only the teeth but also the quality of life.

## İçerik

Pointing out that bruxism can occur due to stress, psychological problems, and various dental or systemic reasons, Oral, Dental, and Maxillofacial Surgeon Asst. Prof. Hacer Fulya Üçem said, “Changes in children's daily routines and social environments with the opening of schools can also be a source of stress.” Asst. Prof. Üçem noted that untreated bruxism can lead to tooth wear and decay, sleep problems, and temporomandibular joint problems, and advised parents to monitor whether children grind their teeth during sleep.

Asst. Prof. Hacer Fulya Üçem, Oral, Dental, and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Üsküdar University Dental Hospital, made statements about the causes of bruxism seen in children, its relationship with stress especially during school periods, potential problems it can cause, and the treatment process.

**Teeth clenching can also reduce children's quality of life!**

Asst. Prof. Hacer Fulya Üçem stated that bruxism, known as unconscious teeth clenching or grinding, is typically associated with stress, saying, “20 percent of the adult population reports unconsciously clenching their teeth during the day. However, bruxism is not just a problem encountered by adults.”

Asst. Prof. Üçem noted that teeth clenching is also seen in childhood, and said, “This condition can also be a harbinger of other diseases. We can say that untreated teeth clenching quickly reduces children's quality of life.”

**Serious consequences can arise if teeth grinding and clenching are left untreated!**

Asst. Prof. Üçem pointed out that bruxism and teeth grinding, especially in children, can be seen in 25 out of every 100 children, stating, “In children, bruxism can be encountered in two ways: while sleeping or while awake. The causes of both conditions are known as stress, depressive mood, and unhappiness. Serious consequences can arise if teeth grinding and clenching are left untreated. The basis of treatment is to resolve the problem faced by the teeth clencher under the supervision of a psychologist.”

Asst. Prof. Üçem stated that the incidence of bruxism in children decreases after an average age of 12, adding, “Parents usually state that they notice their children grinding their teeth in their sleep due to the sound. Among the causes of bruxism in children, besides emotional and psychological stress, many local and systemic reasons can be found. Teeth clenching and grinding is an action that can occur at any age, usually during sleep, by unconsciously clenching the teeth. This abnormal condition manifests itself with a quite disturbing sound. Generally, this habit is not much perceived by the person themselves. However, families can easily notice their children grinding their teeth during sleep. The habit of teeth clenching and grinding can occur during the day, at night during sleep, or both at night and during the day.”

**Stress experienced with the opening of schools can manifest as nocturnal teeth clenching!**

Asst. Prof. Üçem, referring to situations that can trigger bruxism in children, said the following:

“Teeth clenching and grinding can be observed due to dental reasons that arise especially during periods of tooth change, when a large number of dental caries occur, and when restorations such as fillings become old and lose their fit; due to systemic problems seen in chronic respiratory and digestive system disorders or hormonal imbalances; and due to psychological factors arising from situations that stress the child, such as the birth of a sibling, family discord, or school problems. The problem of teeth clenching and grinding is very important because it can lead to tooth wear and decay, sleep problems, and especially wear and acquired structural damage in the temporomandibular joint.

Changes in children's daily routines and social environments with the opening of schools can also be a source of stress. For children starting school for the first time or moving to a new class, many factors such as adapting to the school environment, lessons, teacher and peer relationships can create stress. This stress can manifest itself in some children as nocturnal teeth clenching and grinding. Therefore, during the back-to-school period, it is important for parents to monitor changes in the child's sleep patterns as well as behaviors such as teeth clenching and grinding.”

**If a child has a teeth grinding problem, they should first see a pediatric dentist! **

Asst. Prof. Hacer Fulya Üçem stated that the first practice to be done for children with teeth grinding problems is to observe the child at night, saying, “Thus, when the child starts grinding teeth, a gentle nudge can help them transition from deep sleep to normal sleep. This practice should be patiently done every night until the frequency of teeth grinding decreases or stops completely.”

Asst. Prof. Üçem, stating that with this method, the child's teeth grinding is expected to decrease over time, concluded her words as follows:

“The use of medical splints is not recommended for children during developmental periods. If your child has a teeth grinding and clenching problem, you should first see a pediatric dentist. The pediatric dentist will check for any damage to the teeth during the examination. Additionally, some questions may be asked during the examination to understand if your child is stressed. If deemed necessary, you may be advised to consult a child psychologist or psychiatrist.”
