## **Spiritual ties between two fraternal countries are being strengthened **

Dr. Abdülhamit Eşmeli, Religious Services Counselor at the Jakarta Embassy, who delivered a speech during the program, emphasized that Sufi culture, one of the cornerstones of Islamic civilization, is a strong refuge against the spiritual problems brought about by the modern age, and stated that such events strengthen the spiritual ties between the two faternal countries.

Following the welcoming speeches, the discussion titled “Between Brain and Soul: Sufism and Mental Health Through the Eyes of a Psychiatrist,” featuring Prof. Nevzat Tarhan as a speaker, began.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that every figure in the Sema (whirling dervish ceremony) is a universal symbol; he explained that the right hand pointing upwards and the left hand downwards signifies 'receiving from God and giving to the people,' and that the dervish is merely an intermediary and means in this cycle.

## **Sufi solution to the crisis of modernity**

Starting his speech by addressing the spiritual dilemmas of the modern world, Tarhan stated that the “pleasure-oriented philosophy of life” underlies the globally increasing cases of suicide, depression, and addiction in the last 40 years. Likening this ego-centric approach to a cancer cell in the body, Tarhan said: “A cancer cell knows no bounds, it grows by consuming what’s next to it, but ultimately it kills both the host and itself. Mevlana’s teachings, however, are the strongest shield protecting humanity from this trap of narcissism.”

## **Modern man imprisoned in a life focused on consumption and pleasure**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, opening a special bracket for what he described as the “California Syndrome,” the spiritual pandemic of the modern age, drew attention to the dangers brought by this Western-centric lifestyle. Analyzing the four main symptoms of the syndrome, such as, hedonism, narcissism, loneliness, and the spiral of unhappiness, Tarhan stated: “With the California Syndrome, modern man has been imprisoned in a life solely focused on consumption and pleasure. This situation drags the individual into deep loneliness amidst crowds and an endless search for meaning.”

Tarhan emphasized that spiritual values are an important rehabilitation tool for modern humans.

## **The Reference of Positive Psychology: Mevlana and the PERMA Model**

Tarhan stated that Positive Psychology, which the Western world has presented as the “science of happiness” in recent years, is actually Mevlana’s methodology, and he explained the PERMA model with Sufi concepts.

Prof. Tarhan, pointing out that the 5 elements in Seligman’s PERMA Model, the latest theory of Positive Psychology, are also found in Sufism, explained these elements as follows: “The letter P (positive emotion), the letter E (engagement), the letter R (relationships), the letter M (meaning), and the letter A (accomplishment). The first element is that a person acts with a positive perception in life at first. What is this? In Sufism, it is said that every person can be a friend unless proven otherwise. They have taken this very philosophy and applied it in positive psychology. The second is for a person to be engaged in work that makes them happy, meaning being happy with small things. This is the equivalent of the word ‘shukur’ (gratitude). Being able to be grateful for small things. The third element is to build relationships, to keep social ties strong, which corresponds to the concept of a friendly person in Sufism. The essence of Sufism is if you are looking for a friend to help you, there are very few, but if you are looking for friends to help, there are so many. Making goodness a method is the philosophy of wisdom. The fourth is meaningfulness, adding meaning to every task. One of the teachings of Sufi culture is that everything you do has meaning, even smiling is considered charity. We can now scientifically define a culture where even a smile is considered charity. The fifth model is to savor success. Being able to take pleasure in small successes. The Western philosophy of always needing more is questioned here. One element is missing in PERMA, true happiness cannot be possible only with worldly happiness, this is a philosophy that only aims for worldly happiness,” he said.

## **Four steps to truth and a warning against fake sheikhs!**

Summarizing the journey to truth through the teachings of great figures like Imam Rabbani and Imam Naqshbandi, Tarhan explained the stages of Sharia, Tariqa, Ma’rifa, and Haqiqa. Stating that the greatest tariqa (Sufi order) in this era is to follow the Sunnah of our Prophet, Tarhan also warned society against “fake sheikhs” who exploit religion for commercial or worldly interests.

## **Sufi meditation with scientific data**

Referring to Üsküdar University’s scientific studies on the brain, Tarhan conveyed the neurobiological effects of spirituality with these words: “Sufi meditation and dhikr activate the anterior cingulate cortex, which is the brain’s emotion regulation center. Trusting in Allah and the feeling of integration with Him cause the release of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, providing a protective effect against depression.”

## **Charity economy and social trust**

Stating that the Western world has moved from a capitalist period where it saw “charity and mutual aid as cost-increasing” to a “social responsibility” stage, Tarhan emphasized that the culture of zakat and sadaqa (charity) in Islam builds social trust. “Where there is trust, there is peace, and where there is peace, there is production and tranquility” he said, drawing attention to the impact of Sufism on social welfare.

Answering questions from participants, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan also made striking remarks on gender relations and differences in brain structure from the perspective of Sufism and psychology.

## **Male and female brain: Differences and complementarity**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that the foundation of healthy communication in relationships lies in understanding biological and psychological differences, shared striking data on the functioning of male and female brains. He emphasized that the ‘network’ structure of the female brain, focused on emotional intelligence and empathy, and the more results-oriented and ‘logical’ functioning of the male brain are complementary elements, not rivals. Tarhan stated, “The relationship between women and men is not a race for superiority, but a matter of balance and grace. Instead of the confrontational models imposed by the modern world, the principle of ‘compassion and affection’ (love) offered by Sufism is the only way to bring peace to both hemispheres of the brain,” thus expressing that the key to domestic tranquility lies in accepting these creation differences.

## **Indonesians showed great interest in Author Tarhan on the 2nd day as well**

At the end of the program, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan met with his readers amidst great interest. Indonesian readers, eager to have their books translated into Indonesian signed, formed long queues to take souvenir photos with Tarhan.
