## Özet

Experts state that just as seasonal transitions cause changes in nature, they also affect our body and soul, noting that while some individuals experience an increase in energy, others may suffer from fatigue, apathy, and loss of motivation.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop stated that a decrease in melatonin hormone and shifts in circadian rhythm may be observed, and added, “This situation can negatively affect sleep quality. Disruptions in sleep patterns can trigger many mental and physical problems. Allergic reactions, infections like colds and flu, skin problems, gastrointestinal disorders, or cardiovascular issues may increase during spring months or existing complaints may worsen.” Aytop pointed out that spring fatigue usually passes within a few weeks, emphasizing that prolonged symptoms could indicate spring depression.

Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about the effects of the spring season on human body and mental health, potential spring fatigue, energy fluctuations increasing in bipolar disorder, recognizing symptoms, and coping mechanisms.

**Seasonal transitions cause biological changes in the body!**

Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop stated that when spring is mentioned, similar images often come to mind, and said, “The scent of earth dampened by spring rain, sprouting trees and grass, colorful flowers, fluttering butterflies, chirping bird sounds, and the sun’s warming energy… This revitalization in nature often creates a feeling of relief and renewal in us as well.”

Aytop expressed that many people feel their energy increases with spring, feeling more motivated and positive, and continued, “Indeed, seasonal transitions, especially the spring months, lead to some biological changes in our bodies. With increased daylight, the production of ‘feel-good’ neurochemicals like serotonin and dopamine can be supported. This can be associated with an improvement in our mood, an increase in energy, and a more positive outlook. In short, with the arrival of spring, we can feel the sun shining in our inner world as well.”

**Not everyone is affected by these changes in the same way! **

However, Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop noted that this picture is not the same for everyone, and said, “While some individuals welcome spring energetically and joyfully, for others this period can bring a more fluctuating mood. Sometimes our internal weather is not sunny; it can be partly cloudy, rainy, or stormy. Therefore, it would not be correct to evaluate the effects of spring as a uniform experience.”

Aytop reiterated that significant changes occur in nature during spring months, stating the following:

“During this process, the ion balance in the air can also change. At the same time, with the awakening of plants, pollen production increases, and these pollens spread over wide areas through the wind. All these environmental changes can have effects on both our physical and mental processes. However, it is important to emphasize three key points here: Not everyone has to be affected by these changes; the intensity of these effects can vary among affected individuals; and these effects do not manifest in the same way for everyone. This is because individual differences such as genetic makeup, psychological resilience, social support systems, and environmental conditions directly influence this process.”

**Seasonal transition can disrupt sleep patterns! **

Emine Akın Aytop stated that with the arrival of spring, changes can also occur in our biological rhythm, saying, “Especially a decrease in melatonin hormone production and shifts in the circadian rhythm can be observed. This situation can negatively affect sleep quality.”

Aytop reminded that sleep is critically important for both physical and mental renewal, and explained, “Disruptions in sleep patterns can trigger many mental and physical problems. Furthermore, fluctuations in serotonin and dopamine levels can manifest with different symptoms. Allergic reactions, infections like colds and flu, skin problems, gastrointestinal disorders, or cardiovascular issues may increase during spring months or existing complaints may worsen.”

**If symptoms last longer than two weeks, caution should be exercised! **

Emine Akın Aytop noted that ‘spring fatigue’ is one of the situations frequently encountered during spring months, and said, “This condition can manifest with low energy, apathy, quick tiring, loss of motivation, and procrastination behaviors.”

Aytop also pointed out that changes in sleep and appetite patterns, difficulty waking up in the mornings, and concentration problems can also be observed, stating, “The good news is that these symptoms usually diminish on their own within a few weeks as the body adapts to the new season. However, if these symptoms last longer than two weeks, more caution should be exercised. Symptoms such as persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, intense fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and changes in sleep and appetite may indicate spring depression. In such a case, seeking professional support is very important.”

**Awareness of symptoms and expert support when needed are important! **

On the other hand, Emine Akın Aytop shared information that spring can manifest in some individuals with an excessive increase in energy, stating, “Especially in individuals with bipolar disorder, spring can trigger manic or hypomanic episodes. During these periods, a person may feel excessively energetic, powerful, and active; need less sleep, have increased talkativeness, accelerated thoughts, and may exhibit impulsive behaviors. Therefore, it is important to develop awareness of such symptoms and seek expert support when needed.”

Aytop underlined that some lifestyle adjustments are necessary to manage these changes brought by spring more healthily, concluding her words as follows:

“Balanced nutrition, adequate water intake, limiting caffeine consumption, and paying attention to sleep hygiene are the cornerstones of this process. Regular physical activity supports both physical health and improves mood. Additionally, limiting social media and screen use can reduce mental burden. Acquiring healthy hobbies and establishing a work-life balance also play an important role in this process.

Mindfulness practices can also help maintain inner balance during the spring period. These practices enable a person to direct their attention to the ‘here and now’ without judgment. Connecting with nature is also a very effective method. Especially walks taken with mindful awareness can be both mentally and physically healing. A slow-paced walk, focusing on the senses; by activating the senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell, supports the person staying in the present moment. Recognizing and naming our emotions and observing the situations in which they arise is also an important skill. At this point, keeping an emotion diary can facilitate understanding internal processes.

Finally, seeking professional support when needed is an important source of strength. Psychological support enables an individual to recognize and effectively utilize both their internal and environmental resources. This process helps strengthen emotional balance, develop stress coping skills, and increase psychological resilience.”
