## **Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “She has succeeded in using her fingers to activate her brain's visual center”**

After the opening ceremony, the President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, personally toured the exhibition with Serra Kargaoğlu.

Tarhan, who received information about the works from Kargaoğlu, emphasized that these pieces represent a multifaceted success. Tarhan stated, “For a visually impaired young person to create such wonderful and intricately crafted works is truly an impressive and meaningful success story. There is tremendous effort involved, and this is something that pushes boundaries. She has succeeded in using her fingers to activate her brain's visual center, which is a piece of information that will enter scientific literature. This situation is not only an artistic creation but also an exemplary case that should be examined neuroscientifically, as the person has managed to use their fingers to activate the brain's visual center. Serra's success clearly demonstrates how obstacles can be overcome when the right meaning is attributed to them. It is also an inspiration for many young people in similar situations.”

## **“Obstacles are Overcome if Meaning is Added”**

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of adding meaning to life, stated, “She enrolled in the social services program at the university and has high academic achievement. She possesses high intelligence and has added significant meaning to her life by embracing her artistic side. If meaning is attributed, obstacles are overcome. Those who find the right meaning in disabilities, pains, and difficulties can manage those pains. She has truly embraced that meaning. It is wonderful that her parents have provided tremendous support, which is a huge advantage. Her teacher and curator also patiently guided her here. As Neşet Ertaş once said, 'One who runs with love never tires.' Serra worked day and night to create magnificent works. Here, all the instructors opened doors and are supporting young people. Approaches of this kind truly serve the future of humanity.”

## **Prof. Mehmet Zelka: “The Reward of Determination, Effort, and Faith…”**

Rector's Advisor Prof. Mehmet Zelka stated that the exhibition is the product of great effort. Zelka said, “Here, we all witness the reward of determination, effort, and faith. The works Serra has created are the result of long effort and patience. Of course, the support of her family and instructors during this process is also of great importance. With both material and moral support, it becomes possible for such beautiful works to emerge. In this regard, I congratulate everyone who contributed, and I believe that Serra will achieve much more beautiful things in the future.”

## **Asst. Prof. Melek Çaylak: “A Dream World Woven with Fingertips”**

ENMER Director, Head of Social Services Program Asst. Prof. Melek Çaylak, narrated the process of meeting Serra Kargaoğlu and the story behind the exhibition's creation. Çaylak said, “Our paths crossed with Serra at a fair, and afterwards we invited her to our university. We have been conducting a very productive educational process together for two years. During this process, we had the opportunity to see more closely how talented and productive an artist she is. We wanted to explore this world, which Serra wove stitch by stitch with her fingertips, with our eyes. This exhibition reveals how powerful imagination and creation through feeling can be, beyond mere sight. Furthermore, our university's support for such works made this process possible.”

## **Serra Kargaoğlu: “I Wanted to Make People Feel More Than See”**

Serra Kargaoğlu, the artist behind the exhibition, discussed the inspiration and process of her works. Kargaoğlu said, “In this exhibition, I created an underwater-themed work because I was curious about what the underwater world is like, the creatures that live there, and how that world feels. I created my works using threads and entirely by touch. The sound of the waves is like a rhythm and music to me. That's why, in this exhibition, it's not just about seeing, but also about feeling. During the working process, I experienced many different emotions; there were moments when I struggled and was sad, but I never gave up. I want people to feel more than see when they visit this exhibition. Perhaps we cannot see, but there is a world beneath the sea that lives and feels just like us. And I wanted to make you feel this. I want them to understand what they feel here more than what they see. Because feeling is something very, very, very different.”

## **Gönül Kargaoğlu: “Close Your Eyes and Focus on Feeling”**

Serra Kargaoğlu's mother, Gönül Kargaoğlu, and father, Deniz Kargaoğlu, stated that they wish visitors to explore the exhibition with a deeper experience. Gönül Kargaoğlu said, “Before you tour the exhibition, my request to you is to close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine what you would feel. Afterwards, when you experience the works in this manner, I believe you will understand Serra and her world much better. Serra began creating by touch from an early age; she expressed herself with play-doh, threads, and different materials. Over time, this talent developed and today it has transformed into such an exhibition. This was a dream we had cherished for years, and its realization today made us very happy.”

## **Funda Sevim: “Visitors Should Put Themselves in Serra’s Shoes”**

Funda Sevim, Curator and Art Consultant of Ferry’s Concept Art Studio, drew attention to the experiential aspect of the exhibition. Sevim said, “Our biggest expectation from visitors is that, while touring the exhibition, they put themselves in Serra's place and imagine the kind of world she creates in. Experiencing this by closing their eyes will allow them to evaluate the works from a much different perspective. We met Serra at a very young age, and I realized then how strong her imagination was. During this process, we contributed a lot to each other, and I believe she will advance even further.”
