Speaking at the panel, Üsküdar University Rector's Advisor Cemalnur Sargut stated that Sufism is the art of showing the meaning of worship and the path to the heart, saying, “The honor of a nation is its 'kamus', meaning its lexicon, its dictionary, its language. And Âşık Veysel, a great Sufi and one of the great sultans who protected that language, was bestowed upon us as an exemplary personality who, through his life, his ability to build relationships among people, and his power to reflect his devotion and love to all hearts.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that cultures are transferred through stories, narratives, poems, and folk songs, emphasized the importance of preserving our culture, saying, “His ability to express his knowledge and feelings with his saz made a significant contribution to cultural transmission. We also need to do our best to pass on this culture to new generations. If we detach from these roots, we will become slaves to popular culture. We will lose our culture and our language.”** ## İçerik ## ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4613-230512011546.JPG) ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4530-230512011612.JPG) ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Âşık Veysel contributed to cultural transmission with his saz.”** Âşık Veysel, whose real name is Veysel Şatıroğlu, a Turkish folk poet and minstrel, was included in 'UNESCO's Commemorative Anniversaries Program' on the 50th anniversary of his passing, upon Turkey's proposal, and 2023 was declared the 'Âşık Veysel' year worldwide. In this context, a panel titled “Speaking Veysel, Understanding Veysel After 50 Years” was organized at Üsküdar University by the Institute of Sufi Studies, with the support of Ege Üniversitesi Devlet Türk Müziği Konservatuarı Bölümü and Kerim Vakfı. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4501-230512011633.JPG) ## **“The honor of a nation is its 'kamus'”** Üsküdar University Rector's Advisor Cemalnur Sargut, who participated online in the panel as part of the opening speeches, said, “Sufism is the art of showing the inner face of science, the true meaning of worship, and the path to the heart. We have gained the pleasure of commemorating these great sultans who opened this path for us and who I believe were truly far-sighted. A saying I heard deeply affected me: the honor of a nation is its 'kamus', meaning its lexicon, its dictionary, its language. Âşık Veysel is, in essence, a Sufi among the great sultans who protected that language. He is a grace to us as an exemplary personality, through his life, his art of thinking of others before himself, and his ability to establish relationships between the enlightened and those less enlightened but with a perception of meaning, reflecting his devotion and love to hearts. He is one of the valuable figures of our country.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4509-230512011657.JPG) ## **“The 50th Anniversary of Âşık Veysel's Birth into the Eternal Realm”** Prof. Dr. Emine Yeniterzi, Deputy Director of Üsküdar University Institute of Sufi Studies and Head of the Department of Sufi Culture and Literature, began her speech by wishing mercy to those who lost their lives in the earthquake disaster that affected 11 of our provinces on February 6, offering condolences to their relatives, and wishing recovery to the injured. ## **“A representative of a culture that prioritizes social benefit”** Prof. Dr. Yeniterzi said about Âşık Veysel; “He says, ‘My loyal beloved is the black earth.’ We express the longing for our loved ones given to the embrace of the earth by the earthquake, through Âşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, who said, ‘Mountains bloom flowers, Veysel opens sorrows,’ who matured and revealed the gems within him through his hardships, who was not just a folk poet, but the poet of the people. Many of his verses and quatrains are etched in our hearts. Âşık Veysel, who likened his mortal life to a long and narrow road by saying 'I am on a long, thin road,' found his path from darkness to light. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4873-230512011723.JPG) Âşık Veysel says, 'I could not have been a true poet/ Had my eyes not been dazzled by flowers.' Indeed, from his poems, we understand that his physical eyes were closed to the world, but with his inner eye, he turned to a colorful, luminous, bright inner world, and, as Mevlânâ said, reached the essence within the mountain of the body. He educated himself through oral tradition, without reading books, following the master-apprentice tradition. Benefiting from Anatolian wisdom, he succeeded in becoming a poet and a sage, knowledgeable in the ancient culture of the tradition, in the line of Yunus Emre and Karacaoğlan.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-5035-230512011923.JPG) ## **The ignorant reads but cannot be a scholar / Not everyone can know the science of perfection** Yeniterzi, stating that the poet, who understands the language of the heart, also uses Turkish beautifully; “He has a pure language. In classical Turkish literature, there is the art of 'sehl-i mümteni'. It is the mastery of expressing deep and intense meanings with few words, in a short, simple, and natural expression, appearing as if easily said. Many of Âşık Veysel's poems provide us with the finest examples of this art,” she said. ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “An exemplary personality not only for Anatolia but for the world”** Starting his speech by stating that it was no surprise that this year was declared the Year of Âşık Veysel by UNESCO, Üsküdar University Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “An exemplary personality, not only for Anatolian culture but for the world, has been introduced to the entire world.” Referring to an interview Âşık Veysel gave four years before his death, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Âşık Veysel beautifully summarized what he represented in that interview. He says, ‘After I die, do not put stone or concrete on me.’ He continues, ‘Let my soil also serve my nation; let grass grow on me, let flowers bloom. Let sheep eat the grass and turn into meat, let lambs eat and turn into milk, let bees carry it and turn into honey.’ This statement actually reflects a situation in our ancient culture. Our Prophet also said, ‘The best among you are those most beneficial to people.’ He is a representative of a culture that prioritizes social benefit over individual benefit, even thinking of his soil being useful after his death.” ## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Âşık Veysel made a significant contribution to cultural transmission”** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that cultures are transferred through stories, narratives, poems, and folk songs, said, “At one time, songs, folk songs, all were forbidden. Sociological changes do not happen from top to bottom. They are alive and happen from bottom to top. You cannot destroy a culture by banning the saz. That culture lived in Anatolia. When the time came, it revived. Thankfully, it revived. One of our most important values that keeps our culture alive is Âşık Veysel. His eyes were closed, but he was able to open his inner eye. The hardships he endured led to his development. His not giving up, embarking on his own journey of discovery, and his ability to express his learned knowledge and feelings with his saz made a very significant contribution to cultural transmission. We also need to do our best to transmit this culture to new generations. If we detach from these roots, we will become slaves to popular culture, we will lose our own culture and language, we will lose everything.” ## ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4903-230512011758.JPG) ## **Invited academics made their presentations** Following the speeches, Assoc. Dr. Sıtkı Bahadır Tutu, Dr. Lecturer Hande Devrim Küçükebe, and Lecturer Ali Hikmet Gökçen from Ege Üniversitesi Devlet Türk Müziği Konservatuarı Türk Müziği Bölümü, who attended the panel as guests of Üsküdar University, presented under the title 'Speaking Veysel, Understanding Veysel After 50 Years'. Topics included the cultural accumulation that gave rise to Âşık Veysel, how Veysel re-synthesized this accumulation to evoke aesthetic excitement, how he uttered words and melodies, what was understood/could be understood from what was said, and the reflections of Veysel's influence. ## **“The reason Veysel is one of the pinnacles of Turkish culture and art life; is his success in combining words with melody”** Assoc. Dr. Sıtkı Bahadır Tutu said, “What determines the mastery of a minstrel is not how rhythmically he recites poetry, how technically proficiently he plays the saz, or how originally he composes a melody. Indeed, the motifs, phrases, and sometimes even the entire melodies performed by minstrels have been perfected over centuries and passed down from minstrel to minstrel. What is important is to knead new words with traditional elements, and to match and process them most successfully with the melody, so that when Veysel departs, the saz he leaves behind does not lament like a lonely nightingale. This is the reason Veysel is one of the pinnacles of Turkish culture and art life; his success in combining words with melody enabled him to explain the necessity and ways of unity to all humanity. Mehmet Kaplan explains the lines 'I keep your beauty in my eyes, wherever I look, you are there' as the divine beauty seen in the primordial realm at the moment of first creation. The understanding of tawhid (oneness of God) of Yunus Emre and the Bektashi tradition is processed and reflected. He was one of us, Âşık Veysel was now a phenomenon referred to simply as 'Veysel'. Veysel, who possessed sightless eyes, advised us to look with the eye of the heart, and only told of the truths and beauties seen with the inner eye, for in that world, there was no looking down on you or me,” he said. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/files/img-4592-230512011818.JPG) Lecturer Ali Hikmet Gökçen performed works by Âşık Veysel, whom he described as “the pinnacle of word and melody harmony,” and offered his evaluations. Dr. Lecturer Hande Devrim Küçükebe explained how Âşık Veysel influenced artists in music and other fields of art, tracing these influences in their works and how he serves as an inspiration today.
