The opening speeches of the symposium, held online on Saturday, December 16, were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, Head of the Symposium Organizing Committee; Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (İTBF) at Üsküdar Üniversitesi; and Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector and Chairman of the Executive Board of Üsküdar Üniversitesi.

## **Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı: “The phenomenon of loneliness has become a common situation in business life as well”**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, Lecturer at the Sociology Department of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (İTBF) and Head of the Symposium Organizing Committee, who delivered the opening speech within the scope of the symposium, said, “Those who do not feel lonely in social life may feel more lonely at work.”
Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı emphasized that loneliness, described as a wound of modern societies, is considered one of the biggest problems of today's people. Stating that despite people communicating socially and physically with each other, they suffer from mental and spiritual loneliness, Prof. Dr. Süleymanlı continued as follows:

“In today's societies, the phenomenon of loneliness, experienced at high levels in people's family lives and social circles, has also become a frequently observed situation in business life. In fact, individuals who do not feel emotionally lonely in social life may feel more lonely at work. There are various studies on this. Especially in business life, excessive competition, selfishness, and narcissistic tendencies, while building a self-structure, also deepen the phenomenon of loneliness, affecting individuals. In addition, developments in communication networks accelerating with the globalization process, and living conditions brought by modern cities increase and intensify the feeling of loneliness in the workplace.”

## **How does the feeling of loneliness affect employees?**

Prof. Dr. Süleymanlı stated that topics such as how the feeling of loneliness affects employees, which professionals feel loneliness more, and the extent of loneliness experiences of employees in different countries constituted the main subject of the symposium, and added, “In fact, discussing workplace loneliness, which is not talked about much and whose deep dimensions we perhaps underestimate even if noticed, and making determinations about it, will lead to individuals and companies gaining awareness at all levels.”

**Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “There are differences between old lonelinesses and new lonelinesses”**

Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (İTBF) at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, in her opening speech, mentioned that technological possibilities are both a remedy for loneliness and a factor causing it. Stating that as İTBF, they have been continuing sociological research on loneliness and examining its different dimensions for some time, Prof. Dr. Arıboğan said, “Our source of inspiration on this matter is our esteemed Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who managed to bring the issue of loneliness to Turkey's agenda, because he approaches the event from the perspective of human psychology.”

“Today, we will specifically present a study on workplace loneliness, but generally, at the societal level, there is also a differentiation in the feeling of loneliness due to the transition to a different level of civilization,” said Prof. Dr. Arıboğan, stating that there are also differences between old lonelinesses and new lonelinesses. Prof. Dr. Arıboğan said the following:

“The agricultural society did not allow people to be alone. Our generation grew up with neighborhood culture. We were children accountable to our neighbors, to our elders. Turkey rapidly transformed into an industrial society. The modern people who emerged began to feel lonely. A new world perception emerged, defined as the individual and others, where the individual comes to the forefront, and we talk about individual rights and individual interests.”

## **Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “It will be possible to talk about something called new neoloneliness”**

Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan stated that the modern world objectifies individuals and positions them as consumption materials, saying, “We were put into molds at a point where we wouldn't even complain about loneliness, and as if we were presented to the market as consumption elements on shelves. But right now, we are also facing another level of civilization. In a new world perception, which we call Industry 4.0, where we have surpassed post-industry, meaning it has become the 'post' of postmodernity, another world is coming with robots, semi-robotized forms, artificial intelligence, and augmented realities.”

Prof. Dr. Arıboğan also conveyed that a new world perception has arrived, where we can befriend robots, spend our feelings of loneliness with robots we employ at home, and be alongside our lost mothers and fathers in an augmented reality world. She said, “Today we are talking about loneliness, but beyond the concept of loneliness we define, it will be possible to talk about something called new neoloneliness. Therefore, it is very important to bring our research to a point where we can relate it to the future and the world to come. Today we are talking about loneliness in the workplace, but the world of video conferencing is the most primitive mode of the new world. Our meeting online right now is no different from writing on papyrus. We have not yet invented the wheel of the new world. What we will transform into in that world is also a very important thing. Perhaps we can continue our research on new definitions of loneliness for the upcoming period.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Feeling lonely and being alone are different things”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, began his speech by commemorating Kazakhstan's Independence Day and said, 'May their independence continue to strengthen.'

Tarhan stated that there are new studies on loneliness, saying, “Feeling lonely and being alone are different things. This year’s symposium topic is; loneliness in the workplace. People can feel lonely even in a crowd. A person may not feel lonely even if they are alone. The main thing is for the person to feel lonely. Feeling lonely in a crowd is one of the most common types of loneliness we encounter in the workplace.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Loneliness is a silent danger!”**

Tarhan also stated that mobbing can be applied by isolating people in the workplace, and that leaving someone alone is a form of mobbing, saying, “People can be psychologically harassed by ignoring them, not greeting them, excluding them, and thus isolating them.”

Tarhan explained that the World Health Organization points to 3 major dangers awaiting the world: income inequality, climate change, and loneliness. He said, “Loneliness is a silent danger. The effects of loneliness on individuals have become more understandable in recent years.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Herpes (cold sores) and shingles are more common in people who feel lonely”
Tarhan noted that it has been explained that loneliness also affects the immune system, stating that Herpes (cold sores) and shingles are more common in people who feel lonely, and that feeling lonely has an effect equivalent to smoking 1 pack of cigarettes a day in terms of the harm it causes to the individual.

Tarhan also stated that because anxiety is high in these individuals, the brain secretes more stress hormones, saying, “Since the immune system is suppressed in these individuals, stress suppresses the immune system, and because it is suppressed, dormant viruses like cold sore viruses become active in these individuals. They become active. Various diseases such as canker sores, shingles, cold sores, and Behçet's disease start to appear more frequently.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Loneliness affects like an insidious disease”**

According to a study, Tarhan explained that frequently observed Herpes virus infection indicates a low immune system, and that pain, fatigue, and depressive symptoms are 50 percent more common in people who feel lonely. He said, “Loneliness affects like an insidious disease. The most important reason for increased loneliness has been the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Tarhan also emphasized the increased loneliness during the pandemic period and said that people who are lonely at work also usually suffer from social isolation.

## **50 percent healthier…**

Tarhan provided information, saying, “Individuals with strong social relationships are 50 percent healthier than individuals without strong social relationships. Individuals without strong social relationships experience 50 percent more health problems.”

Reminding the results of the ‘Turkey Digitalization and Loneliness Research,’ announced last year and conducted with over 6,000 people, Tarhan recalled that one in three participants said they frequently felt lonely.

Tarhan stated that this result is an important figure for a social society like Turkey, and noted that studies conducted in countries like England also showed that the rate of those feeling lonely increased during the pandemic period compared to those who did not feel lonely, from 2-2.5 to 3.5.

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “The feeling of belonging is like an identity, a tent for a human being…”**

Tarhan also touched upon the cause of loneliness, stating that the increase in inequality, racism, poverty, and xenophobia worldwide harms the sense of belonging.

Tarhan said, “The feeling of belonging, identity, is like a tent for a human. If you don't have a tent in the forest, if there's no safe place to sleep, you can't sleep there. You don't know where snakes or scorpions might come from. Similarly, humans also need a safe space in social life. People with a feeling of loneliness cannot meet their need for a safe space. Because they don't feel safe, they are restless even in their sleep. Loneliness affects mental health very negatively. The loneliest people are schizophrenics. What is the most important characteristic of schizophrenia? It is an autistic lifestyle. Detached from the world, they live in a fake world of their own. It is the pathological form of loneliness.”

Tarhan also stated that humans are beings who can succeed in living without feeling lonely within society, and noted that people feel lonely when they cannot establish social relationships.

Tarhan explained that individuals with narcissistic personality disorder in society are inevitably lonely because they see themselves as special and superior, and also stated that people who are closed to criticism are lonely.

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Loneliness has now become a public health problem”**

Tarhan also said that loneliness is a growing problem, stating, “Loneliness has now become a public health problem.”

Tarhan also stated that loneliness has become a snowballing problem worldwide and expressed that they are trying to emphasize to decision-makers in Turkey to put this issue on the agenda.

Tarhan also pointed to digitalization, saying that digitalization can be a solution to loneliness. Tarhan stated that autonomous robots provide answers to relieve people's loneliness, but this time, social isolation emerged.

## **‘Loneliness in Business Life’ discussed with examples at the symposium**

In the first session of the symposium, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cem Tutar from Üsküdar Üniversitesi presented “Information Technologies and the Ethos of Business Life in New Capitalism: A Story of Performance Culture,” stating that ‘denial of responsibility’ in workplaces isolates people, making them ‘hyper-individual,’ which in turn brings loneliness.

In their presentation titled “The Struggle of Loneliness: Exploring Loneliness in Tourism Business Life,” Dr. Tansel Tercan and Dr. Nurfer Tercan stated that people suffer from mental crowding and physical loneliness, expressing that loneliness creates suffering individuals.

Prof. Dr. Gali Galiev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zinira Abrarova from Ufa State Petroleum Technological University gave a presentation titled “Loneliness Caused by Job Loss: The Russian Case.”

Prof. Gali Galiev said, “Throughout human history, the theme of loneliness has always been relevant. The feeling of loneliness is often a painful, traumatic, and inevitable experience; it is a multifaceted and contradictory experience that encompasses a wide range of emotions.”

Additionally, Aslı Hale Kılıç presented the ‘Workplace Loneliness in Turkey: Research Results’ within the scope of the symposium.

In the second session of the symposium; Yusuf Özkan Özburun presented “Be a Universe for Yourself When You Are Alone!”, Hale Sülüş Örenç presented “The Loneliness of School Principals”, Hülya Mutlu presented “Human Relationships as a Psychological Capital Investment”, Kader Güven Keskin and Merve Akkız Altun presented “The Loneliness of the 2nd Generation in Family Businesses in Turkey”. In the third session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güzel Tokareva presented “The Loneliness of White-Collar Migrant Workers”, Asif Bayramov presented “The Relationship Between Loneliness and Alienation in Business Life”, Milana Dzhidzhoeva presented “The Loneliness of the Entrepreneur in Russia: In Business Life and Beyond”, Ashimova Aigerim, Lev Gumilyev and Zaida Kunanbayeva presented “Successful and Lonely Businesswomen: The Case of Kazakhstan”.
