## Özet

Experts state that sleep is not just about resting, but also the brain's cleaning and restoration process.

## İçerik

Neurology Specialist Prof. Barış Metin, drawing attention to the fact that people often underestimate their sleep problems, said, “Many people suffer from chronic insomnia but do not seek medical attention for it. A very small group of patients may be using unnecessary medication.” Prof. Metin noted that sleep medications should only be used with a physician’s recommendation and for a short duration, emphasizing that misuse can increase the risk of psychological and physical dependence.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurology Specialist Prof. Barış Metin provided information on the effects of frequently used sleep medications for insomnia, on the occasion of March 13 World Sleep Day.

**Sleep is the brain's cleaning and restoration mode!**

Neurology Specialist Prof. Barış Metin reminded that sleep is not just a resting process for the brain and body, stating, “Sleep is also the brain's cleaning and restoration mode. Toxic proteins like beta-amyloid, which accumulate in the brain during the day while awake, are cleared through the lymphatic system at night during sleep.”

Prof. Metin stated that for memory consolidation, learned information is transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory during sleep, and that tissue regeneration, muscle development, and strengthening of the immune system also occur during sleep.

**Sleep medication should only be used when deemed necessary and prescribed by a physician!**

Prof. Barış Metin noted that sleep medications can be used during transitional periods of 2-4 weeks for conditions such as acute stress, grief, trauma, jet-lag, or medical conditions that make sleep difficult, adding, “Antidepressants with sedative properties can be used in patients experiencing sleep problems due to psychiatric reasons.”

Prof. Metin warned that they should be used cautiously in the presence of diseases affecting respiration, such as sleep apnea, and continued as follows:

“Sleep medication should only be used when deemed necessary and prescribed by a physician, and long-term use of habit-forming drugs should be avoided.

Many sleep medications have the potential to cause both psychological and physical dependence. When tolerance develops, the dose of the drug needs to be increased for it to have the same effect. Long-term use endangers a person’s safety by causing daytime drowsiness, cognitive decline, balance disorders, and increasing the risk of falls in the elderly. In chronic insomnia, the first option is not medication; rather, the underlying cause must be treated first. For example, restless legs syndrome is often a cause of chronic insomnia, and sleep medications are not used in its treatment.”

**Supplements can be effective, but a physician should be consulted for severe insomnia!**

Prof. Barış Metin noted that sleep medications can be part of the treatment not only for insomnia but also for conditions like epilepsy and parasomnias (sleep terror, sleepwalking), and also provided information on natural methods that aid sleep:

“Melatonin regulates the body’s biological clock. Low-dose use 1-2 hours before sleep is effective. Valerian, passionflower, and chamomile tea are known for their mild calming effects. Magnesium can be beneficial if taken in the evening for muscle relaxation and nervous system regulation. While these nutritional supplements can induce a mild desire for sleep, medical advice should definitely be sought in cases of very severe insomnia.”

**Sleep medications can disrupt the brain’s natural sleep pattern when used unconsciously!**

Prof. Barış Metin, drawing attention to the fact that people often underestimate their sleep problems, said, “Many people suffer from chronic insomnia but do not seek medical attention for it. A very small group of patients may be using unnecessary medication.”

**Emphasizing that sleep medications are not a cure but a temporary aid, Prof. Metin concluded his remarks as follows:**

“Sleep medications used without doctor supervision can disrupt the brain's natural sleep architecture, as well as the balance of REM and deep sleep. In sleep disorders, treatment primarily involves addressing the underlying causes.

To ensure circadian consistency, wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. For a digital detox, turn off blue light sources like phones and tablets at least 1 hour before bedtime. Sleep in a completely dark and slightly cool room, approximately 18-20°C. If your insomnia problem has become chronic, you can consult a sleep specialist.”
