## Özet
The body regulates its own rhythm according to daylight.
## İçerik
Experts state that starting the day early, establishing certain routines in the mornings, and most importantly, sleeping in the dark contribute to the circadian rhythm. They also say that inadequate nutrition during the day, especially in the evenings, can lead to increased hunger and the consumption of higher-calorie meals. Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit, who points out that meals consumed at night can also lead to a decrease in sleep quality, said, “Leaving your body hungry at night supports cell renewal (autophagy) and the elimination of toxins from the body, in other words, the detoxification process.”
Hülya Yiğit, Nutrition and Diet Specialist at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, evaluated the topic of circadian rhythm and eating at night.
Yiğit pointed out that the circadian rhythm consists of cyclical, physiological, and behavioral effects created on living beings by the light and dark cycle resulting from the Earth's 24-hour rotation. She said, “Light is the most important rhythm regulator. The body regulates its own rhythm, meaning its hormones, according to daylight. The importance of sleep for mind-body health, to prevent this rhythm from being disrupted, comes into play at this point. Starting the day early, establishing certain routines in the mornings, and most importantly, sleeping in the dark are the practices that will contribute most to your circadian rhythm.”
High-calorie meals consumed at night cause gastrointestinal complaints
Yiğit noted that the body needs more energy for its functions when starting the day, and continued as follows:
“Towards the end of the day, this energy need will decrease, and our body will gradually transition into a resting state. Therefore, it is necessary to meet the body's energy needs during the day. Inadequate nutrition during the day can lead to increased hunger, especially in the evenings, and the consumption of higher-calorie meals. High-calorie meals consumed at night create more gastrointestinal complaints in the body. Those with reflux complaints should be even more careful in this regard. Meals consumed at night can cause digestion to remain active throughout the night and often lead to a decrease in sleep quality.”
Eating at night can accelerate fat storage processes
Hülya Yiğit also explained what can be done if you do not have a chronic illness such as diabetes:
“Leaving your body hungry at night supports cell renewal (autophagy) and the elimination of toxins from the body, in other words, the detoxification process. Carbohydrates and sugars (including fruit sugar) consumed in excess of the body's needs after dinner can accelerate fat storage processes, as they cannot be utilized by the body, and can lead to fatty liver in later stages. For us, this means an increase in waist circumference and increased body fat.
If you are an individual who enjoys snacking in the evenings, instead of carbohydrate-rich snacks after meals, you can choose unsalted nuts, not exceeding 8-10 pieces, or probiotic foods such as ayran/kefir. For sleep quality, it is also important to remember to limit caffeine intake 4-5 hours before bedtime.”
Shift workers at night should also eat according to their sleep hours
Yiğit noted that night shift workers can also adjust their meals according to their sleep hours, even if not according to daylight. She said, “If you want to feel less stressed, more energetic, and happier during the day, do not forget that supporting your circadian rhythm is essential. Quality sleep, regular meal times, and less sugar if possible, will certainly contribute to finding your own rhythm.”
