## Özet

Experts state that helping not only benefits others but also positively affects the mental health of the person providing help.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that research shows that individuals who regularly help experience increased happiness hormones, decreased stress levels, and reduced risk of depression. He said, “Even a small act of support triggers the feeling of ‘I am valuable, I am useful’ in a person. Helping is not only an outward prosocial behavior; it is also a psychological process that initiates a healing cycle within one’s inner world.” Aydın emphasized that while large acts of charity provide a more lasting meaning, sustainable impact often comes from small but regular steps, noting that help shows its true healing effect when done voluntarily and with genuine desire, not out of obligation.

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın provided information about the psychological, biological, and social healing effects of helping for both individuals and society.

**Helping heals your own mental health as much as others'!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that the phrase ‘helping heals’ in psychological literature explains that when an individual offers support to someone else, not only the other party but also their own psychological well-being is strengthened. He said, “Research shows that helping behavior leads to an increase in feel-good chemicals in the brain such as dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin, which in turn regulates a person’s mood.”

Aydın stated that even a small act of support, such as carrying an elderly neighbor’s groceries or being there for a friend in a difficult moment, triggers the feeling of ‘I am valuable, I am useful’ in a person. Therefore, he noted that helping is not only an outward prosocial behavior but also a psychological process that initiates a healing cycle within one’s inner world.

**Helping creates a healing effect on body and soul!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that the effects of helping on mental health are explained through biological, psychological, and social mechanisms. He explained, “Scientific studies show that individuals who help experience a decrease in stress hormones, an increase in happiness hormones, and even a strengthened immune system. Long-term research on volunteerism demonstrates that individuals who regularly help have significantly lower rates of depression. The reason for this is that helping creates a ‘sense of meaning’ in a person, strengthens their sense of identity, and makes them feel more functional. Thus, the act of helping creates a healing effect at biological, emotional, and cognitive levels.”

**Strong social bonds mean strong psychological resilience!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın noted that helping significantly strengthens social bonds, adding, “These bonds have strong psychological effects.”

Aydın pointed out that as people support each other in a society, trust among them increases. He stated, “‘I am a part of this society’ feeling is reinforced, and feelings of loneliness decrease. Research has shown that individuals with social support networks are more resilient to stress, recover from traumatic events faster, and even have higher life satisfaction. A person helping a neighbor in an apartment building or easing a friend’s burden at work unconsciously increases their own psychological resilience capacity. As social bonds strengthen, individuals’ mental resilience and ability to cope with life also strengthen.”

**Long-term healing is possible with small but continuous acts of kindness!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, addressing the difference in depth of impact between small daily acts of kindness and large-scale charitable actions, said, “However, both yield positive psychological outcomes.”

Emphasizing that small daily acts of kindness provide a quick morale boost, Aydın stated the following:

“Holding a door, gently smiling at someone, or even sending a short message to a friend are examples of this effect. While these behaviors create an instant sense of well-being in a person, large-scale acts of charity, such as participating in a regular social responsibility project, provide a more lasting sense of meaning and identity. However, since large acts of charity require more time, energy, and emotional capacity, sustainability is often greater in small acts of kindness. Therefore, the most balanced and long-term psychological healing is achieved through small but continuous acts of kindness.”

**Obligatory help does not heal!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın noted that when helping behavior is performed out of obligation or under pressure, the expected healing effect usually does not emerge. He said, “Because in this situation, the person acts not with internal motivation, but with external pressure.”

Aydın stated that this situation is called ‘external motivation’ in psychology. He used the expressions, “Neurobiologically, it does not activate the reward system. Therefore, a person may feel tired, suppressed, or exhausted while helping. For example, it is common for a person caring for a relative due to family pressure or participating in a mandatory volunteer program at work to experience more stress rather than mental relief. For the healing effect of helping to emerge, the action must be carried out voluntarily, with free will and genuine desire.”

**Help doesn't have to be perfect; sometimes just listening is enough!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın pointed out that integrating the healing effect of helping into daily life does not require big steps, saying, “This process can easily be established with small but regular actions.”

Aydın stated that performing a small act of kindness for someone every day, sending a short message to someone in need, expressing more gratitude within the family, and supporting a neighbor or friend with a small task will strengthen this cycle, concluding his words as follows:

“Starting volunteer work with small steps both strengthens a person’s connection with society and reduces their stress levels. These small supportive behaviors, integrated into daily life, help a person feel that they are contributing to society and also protect their own mental health.

The first recommendation for individuals who want to help but are hesitant is to start helping with small social interactions rather than seeing it as a great responsibility. Most hesitant individuals hold back with thoughts like ‘I’ll be misunderstood,’ ‘my help won’t be enough,’ or ‘I’ll bother them’; however, as cognitive behavioral therapy also shows, these thoughts are anxiety-focused rather than reality-based. Therefore, it is important for the person to practice with small steps; smiling at someone, writing a small thank you note, or offering short-term support in their immediate vicinity can initiate this process. Additionally, choosing ways to help that align with one’s interests, such as working with animals, volunteering online, or participating in activities with less one-on-one interaction, reduces anxiety. Help doesn’t need to be perfect; sometimes just listening creates a healing connection for both the helper and the recipient.”
