## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, explaining that social phobia generally begins in childhood and peaks in adolescence, said, “One of the most common reasons for the decline in academic success of intelligent children during adolescence is social anxiety disorder.”**

**“Individuals with social phobia perceive themselves as less valuable than they are. This leads to a lack of self-confidence, timidity, and a predisposition to depression,” said Prof. Dr. Tarhan, adding that our society has a cultural structure that supports social phobia.**

**Prof. Dr. Tarhan also explained that social media supports social phobia, stating, “Today, children grow up constantly watching things. However, a child who constantly watches will also start watching life in the future and turn into a passive individual prone to social avoidance. If we want to raise individuals who question and produce, rather than merely watch, we must give children the right to make mistakes and limit their screen time.”**

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the issue of social phobia.

## **Social anxiety and social phobia are different concepts**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that individuals with social phobia experience shyness and timidity more intensely and severely, stating, “This situation negatively affects a person's professional life and daily routine, hindering their development. Social phobia impacts a person's entire performance and prevents them from utilizing their intelligence and talent. For this reason, social anxiety and social phobia are different concepts. In our culture, especially in Eastern culture and Anatolia, shyness is glorified. This situation can be seen as social anxiety. Therefore, people remain reserved, do not take many risks, and stay silent. These behaviors should not be considered social phobia, because they are learned behaviors. However, for a student with social phobia, getting up to the blackboard during class becomes torture. They freeze during an oral exam, cannot do anything, their hands and feet tremble, they cannot breathe, they turn crimson, and cannot speak. They cannot even explain what they know. This situation negatively affects all the success and performance of individuals experiencing social anxiety.”

## **Shy individuals remain alone even if they don't want to**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan explained that there is also an avoidant personality, referred to as 'avoidant personality' in literature, stating, “These individuals remain alone even if they don't want to. Despite not wanting to be alone, they unconsciously push themselves into loneliness. These individuals are introverted. Schizoid individuals are also introverted, but they are not bothered by being alone; on the contrary, they enjoy it. However, avoidant-shy personalities remain alone despite not wanting to. They can never overcome social shyness. They experience a kind of social paralysis; they cannot progress or take steps. When they enter a crowded environment, they feel that everyone is looking at them. They constantly think that others' attention is on them. When they enter a group, they may imagine everyone is watching them and immediately prefer to quietly retreat to a corner and sit down. Avoidance behavior is common in such individuals.”

## **Social anxiety is observed in 36 percent of individuals aged 16-29**

According to research, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that social anxiety is observed in 36 percent of individuals aged 16-29 worldwide, adding, “This is a remarkably high rate. In general, approximately 8 percent of the world's population may experience social phobia at some point in their lives. What is interesting is that social anxiety is more prevalent in developed societies and less common in undeveloped societies. In developing societies, social anxiety can be felt more acutely, especially as the global capitalist system encourages competition. While assertive, risk-taking, and self-confident individuals achieve success, those who cannot do so feel inadequate. The thought 'I need to do it, but I can't' further increases social anxiety. An individual who marries their neighbor's daughter, takes over their father's business, or remains in a village environment has more limited social expectations. Therefore, social anxiety is observed at lower levels in these societies. Furthermore, individuals with social anxiety are constantly seeking security. They act with thoughts like 'Am I safe? Will I make a mistake?' Their greatest fears are making mistakes, being embarrassed, and being disgraced. These fears further fuel avoidance behaviors. Mostly, these individuals have a perfectionist nature. They want everything to be flawless, but with the thought 'I cannot do this perfectly,' they become unable to do anything.”

## **Individuals with social phobia do not feel this anxiety much in environments where they feel safe**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that some children, while feeling strong at home, can exhibit the exact opposite behavior outside, stating, “A child who acts aggressively towards their parents at home might be quiet and compliant outside. Individuals with social phobia do not feel this anxiety much in environments where they feel safe, but in the outside world, they are, on the contrary, quiet, withdrawn, and anxious. They act shyly in front of authority figures and struggle to speak in crowds.”

## **The use of humor by individuals with social phobia reduces anxiety**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also pointed out that the use of humor by individuals with social phobia is a very effective technique for reducing anxiety, and continued:

“In addition, developing tolerance to anxiety is also important. Therapies particularly focus on this issue. 'Anticipatory anxiety,' experienced before an event, is common in individuals with social anxiety. The person experiences great fear thinking about what will happen, and therefore constantly exhibits avoidance behavior. They do not mingle with crowds, hesitate to enter society, and do not want to approach authority figures. In such a situation, physical symptoms such as hand and foot tremors and shortness of breath may also appear. Some people become even more anxious in the face of unexpressive, grim-faced authority figures. Individuals with social anxiety tend to stay away from such people who do not comfort them. At this point, the understanding of leadership also gains great importance. True leadership requires an approach that establishes a trusting relationship by reading the other person's emotions and guiding them appropriately, rather than a finger-wagging, harsh, and authoritarian attitude. It is not very possible to alleviate social anxieties in fear-managed systems. However, in a trust-based management approach, even a few smiles or positive feedback from the leader can help the individual relax.”

## **Social phobia peaks in adolescence**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan explained that social phobia generally begins in childhood and peaks in adolescence, stating, “One of the most common reasons for the decline in academic success of intelligent children during adolescence is social anxiety disorder. Individuals with social phobia often have distorted automatic thoughts. In therapy, such distorted thoughts are addressed and analyzed in detail. When the person recognizes these thoughts and understands that they are not realistic, they can manage their negative thoughts more easily. A person with social anxiety says, ‘I don't deserve love, I am a bad person, I am terrible, I am not good enough, I cannot trust myself, I am powerless, I am weak, I am a failure.’ These individuals generally perceive themselves negatively all the time. Every person has a self-perception. If a person sees their self as larger than it is, they may exhibit narcissistic personality traits. However, individuals with social phobia, on the contrary, perceive themselves as less valuable than they are. This leads to a lack of self-confidence, timidity, and a predisposition to depression.”

## **Some people try to suppress this anxiety by using alcohol**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that some people develop different coping mechanisms to conceal social anxiety, saying, “Some people try to suppress this anxiety by using alcohol. While alcohol provides short-term relief, it can lead to addiction in the long run. Some individuals with social phobia start consuming alcohol to cope with situations such as going on stage or speaking in a crowd, and over time this habit can turn into addiction. Therefore, social phobia can be one of the important underlying factors of alcohol addiction.”

## **Individuals living with social phobia can maintain their standard jobs**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that individuals living with social phobia can meet their daily basic needs and maintain their standard jobs as long as this condition does not reach the level of psychosis, stating, “They are generally hardworking, well-liked, and self-sacrificing people. However, social phobia can become pronounced when they advance in their careers. When a person gets a promotion at work, they realize they need to communicate with more people, manage meetings, and lead their team. In this situation, thoughts like ‘Oh dear, now I have to talk more, bring people together, and collaborate with them’ arise, and they may panic. It is at this point that many people consult a therapist or specialist.”

## **What kind of treatments are applied for social phobia?**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that in the treatment of social phobia, the severity of social phobia is first determined using various scales applied to the individual, and then the person's automatic thoughts and erroneous beliefs are identified, adding, “When the treatment focuses on core problems, many symptoms related to social phobia can also be resolved. One of the frequently used methods today is VR (Virtual Reality) glasses. Since these glasses provide a three-dimensional environment, the person feels as if they are in a real meeting room. Depending on the area where their social anxiety is intense, tasks such as speaking in front of a crowd, giving a presentation, or interacting with people are assigned. At the same time, the person's brain waves are monitored using neurofeedback devices. When anxiety levels rise; Beta waves increase, skin temperature rises, sweating, and skin conductivity increase. These physiological responses are monitored instantly thanks to the devices. By applying feedback therapy, the person learns to cope with these situations. Over time, desensitization is achieved with exposure therapy. The person begins to enter social environments more comfortably by overcoming these fears through trials and expert assistance.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that individuals with social anxiety should give up fatalism, saying, “If they accept the situation by saying ‘This is my destiny,’ it becomes a choice, and the responsibility falls entirely on them. However, to develop, one needs to take calculated risks.”

## **We are a society with a cultural structure that supports social phobia**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that our society has a cultural structure that supports social phobia, saying, “Children are advised to grow up with expressions like ‘Silence, youngster, words belong to the elder’ or ‘Do not talk back to adults.’ Such discourses bring with them an understanding that prevents questioning, encourages the suppression of emotions, and glorifies shyness. In the past, this approach increased social harmony by preventing young people from making mistakes. However, today is an age of communication and a period of extremely intense global competition. To succeed in this environment, we need to engage in peaceful competition. Therefore, for our children's development, instead of protecting them and keeping them away from every mistake, they need to learn to take calculated risks. Especially individuals with social anxiety should have a goal they can strive for and fight for. If a person has an ego ideal they want to reach, they can overcome the obstacles they encounter on the way to this goal.”

## **Parents should allow their children the right to make mistakes**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also gave young people the message, 'The greatest victory is the one a person wins against themselves,' adding, “This victory encompasses the struggle against laziness, fears, fleeting desires, urges, and pleasure traps within us. Young people should know that this struggle is success and should not be afraid of making mistakes. Parents, too, should grant their children the right to make mistakes during this process. When they make a mistake, instead of just focusing on their errors, they should offer support by saying, ‘Look, you did these things very well; you can fix this too.’”

## **Social media supports social phobia**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also explained that social media supports social phobia, stating, “Today, children grow up constantly watching things. However, a child who constantly watches will also start watching life in the future and turn into a passive individual prone to social avoidance. Tablets that are constantly in their hands prevent the development of their social skills, leading to an avoidant personality structure. Perhaps they don't appear to have social phobia, but they become lazy, and their talents diminish. Therefore, if we want to raise individuals who question and produce, rather than merely watch, we must give children the right to make mistakes and limit their screen time. Today, many countries have imposed restrictions on children's screen time. This issue is also being discussed in our country, and a regulation, especially for children under 13, is expected to be issued soon.”
