## Özet
A single can of iced tea contains approximately 7-10 sugar cubes.
## İçerik
Experts state that a common awareness has emerged in society regarding the harmfulness of carbonated drinks to health, and for this reason, the tendency towards iced teas has increased. Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit points out that a can of iced tea contains approximately 7-10 sugar cubes and emphasizes that excessive sugar consumption triggers chronic diseases such as insulin resistance and fatty liver. Yiğit warns that the additives it contains can increase addiction impulses and lead to health problems such as sleep disorders, edema, migraine attacks, and attention deficit in children and adolescents, recommending that iced tea be prepared at home.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit drew attention to the danger in iced teas, which have seen increased consumption in recent years and are frequently preferred as the weather gets warmer, and shared a healthy iced tea recipe that can be prepared at home.
How healthy are iced teas
Starting her words by stating that our desire to consume cold beverages increases with the arrival of summer, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit said, “Especially due to the common awareness that has begun to form in society regarding the harmfulness of carbonated drinks to health, iced teas are among the frequently preferred options.” and drew attention to the question of how healthy these drinks are.
Named tea but consisting of water and sugar
Yiğit stated that tea is the most consumed beverage in the world and said, “In our country too, the consumption of iced tea, which is a different format from hot tea, has increased in recent years. The first iced tea was developed in 1904 by Englishman Richard Blechynden at the Saint Louis World's Fair. Blechynden thought of pouring hot tea over ice cubes to sell it, and as a result of this idea, he achieved great success.” She added that different flavors and packaging types in iced teas make iced tea attractive, saying, “When we examine these beverages, we see that they contain water, sugar, fruit concentrate, acidity regulators, and sweeteners. So, although the product is called tea, its content is actually just water and sugar. The tea content in it is almost negligible. 330 ml iced teas contain approximately 7-10 sugar cubes. We know that when more than 10% of daily energy needs are consumed as sugar, chronic diseases such as insulin resistance and fatty liver emerge. It also negatively affects appetite control.”
control.”
.”
Additives like acidity regulators can increase addiction impulses
Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit stated that some varieties of iced teas carry ‘sugar-free’ labels, saying, “These mislead consumers. Sugar-free beverages contain sweeteners. Research and discussions regarding sweeteners are ongoing. However, mouse studies have shown some varieties to be linked to cancer types such as brain, bladder, and colon cancer. According to another study, subjects who drank water mixed with sweeteners felt more hungry than subjects who drank the same amount of plain water. Furthermore, high consumption of certain food additives such as acidity regulators found in iced teas can increase addiction impulses in individuals and lead to health problems such as sleep disorders, edema, migraine attacks, and attention deficit in children and adolescents.” she warned.
You can also prepare your iced tea at home
Yiğit stated that most packaged iced teas preferred for refreshment contain excessive sugar and food additives with sweeteners whose effects on the body are not fully known, saying, “Especially in the summer months, when you want to drink something cold, instead of opting for packaged iced teas, you can turn to a more natural, sugar-free, and healthy alternative.” She then shared a healthy iced tea recipe that anyone can easily prepare at home:
“The ingredients required to prepare iced tea at home are easy to find and are already present in almost everyone's home. 2 medium-sized peaches, 1 glass of brewed tea (can also be prepared with tea bags), 1 tablespoon of honey, juice of half a lemon, and 3 glasses of water. Slice the peaches into large pieces and boil them with water in a small pot. After the water boils for 8-10 minutes, when the peaches soften, turn off the heat and strain them into a pitcher. Then, add your brewed tea, honey, and lemon juice to the pitcher and mix. Chill in the refrigerator. You can serve your drink with fresh mint leaves and lemon or peach slices. Enjoy!”
